Big River Watch starts now!
The wait is over. It's time to head to your favourite waterside spot and check in on the health of your local river with Big River Watch.
Whether it's wildlife, pollution, barriers or algae, every observation helps us better understand what's happening in our rivers - something that's especially important after they've faced a tough summer of heat and drought. Simply record what you see using the free Big River Watch app, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Why take part in Big River Watch?
Help create a UK and Ireland-wide picture of river health
Track changes in your local river
Spend time in nature
Support evidence-based action for healthier waterways
Want to see Big River Watch taking shape in real time? Follow our live interactive map as surveys come in across the UK and Ireland, and if your area looks a little quiet, please help put it on the map!
Don't forget to share your riverside citizen science on social media. We love seeing your photos, so be sure to tag us @theriverstrust on all platforms and use #BigRiverWatch.
Submit your surveys by midnight on Thursday 24th September and be part of the UK and Ireland's largest visual survey of river health.

They descended the side of a London skyscraper. Can you help them hit their target?
Yesterday, Pierrick and Natalie from our Communications and Advocacy team, tested their nerves and completed a 34-metre abseil down Atlantic House in London alongside staff from the law firm Hogan Lovells Cadwalader.
They’ve already raised £330 of their £400 target but there’s still time to celebrate their efforts and get them over the finish line. Every donation, large or small, will go towards our work to protect and restore rivers across the UK and Ireland.

What can you grow on a wet peatland?
It turns out, quite a lot! Including berries, moss, thatching reeds and biomass crops. Join us at PaludiFair, Ireland's first event dedicated to paludiculture, showcasing how wetland farming can support nature while creating new income opportunities.
8th October 2026 at Killasser Community Centre, Co. Mayo, open to the public from 11am to 4pm.
This event is part of the Interreg NWE BUFFER+ project, which encourages landscape-based solutions for climate adaptation by restoring the natural abilities of peatlands.

Support our work
The profit from T-shirt sales will go towards our vital work, but purchasing an organic cotton beauty isn’t the only way that you can support The Rivers Trust.
Please consider donating, leaving a gift in your will, or fundraising to help us restore and protect rivers across the UK and Ireland. Every contribution makes a difference, and we are deeply grateful for your support in safeguarding our precious waterways.
