SHROPSHIRE COUNCIL COMMUNITY TREE SCHEME,

Message from Sue Hackett, Ruyton XI Towns Parish Clerk.

SHROPSHIRE COUNCIL COMMUNITY TREE SCHEME

We know it’s early in the year to be thinking about tree planting, but our Tree Scheme is soon going to be opening its doors for business once again. The scheme will open on Monday 4th August 2014.

We are running the Tree Scheme on a first come - first served basis. This means that applicants who meet the criteria will be awarded all the trees and hedging transplants they request, subject to availability and the maximum allowable limit of 100 trees and 60 hedging transplants per application. Once the total number of available trees has been reached we will close the scheme.

This means that you will need to get your application in good and early to stand the best chance of success.

Once again, thanks to the generous support of our sponsors Maelor Forest Nurseries, we can offer the opportunity to purchase additional trees over and above the free ones (the ‘top-up’ option), at favourable wholesale prices, plus a small administration and handling charge.

Full details of the Community Tree Scheme and the ‘top-up’ option can be found through the Shropshire Council website, once the scheme opens. Feel free to contact the Tree Team for more information and advice; email: natural.environment@shropshire.gov.uk or tel: 01743 252564.

BIG TREE PLANTING OPPORTUNITY

Shropshire Council, in partnership with Shrewsbury Town Council, has secured funding through the government’s Big Tree Plant project to supply and plant feature trees on public open space throughout Shropshire. This is the last of the highly successful 4 year project.

The theme for this year is to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the start of the First World War by planting trees that will live for at least another hundred years.

Trees will be available for the coming planting season (from late Autumn 2014). They will be supplied as standards some 2 – 2.5m tall and can be more or less any species of your choice. Public locations such as parks and gardens, village greens or even wide street verges could be acceptable. (Of course you will need the owner’s permission if you don’t own the land). The Council’s tree team will be happy to provide any tree-related advice to help you choose the right tree for the right place.

For more details please contact Martin Sutton, County Arboriculturalist, email: martin.sutton@shropshire.gov.uk tel: 01743 252422; or Mike Pugh at Shrewsbury Town Council, email: mike.pugh-stc@shropshire.gov.uk tel: 01743 257661

Best Regards
