Join us for an evening with linguist David Crystal as he talks about his new book You Say Potato.
Everyone has an accent, though many of us think we don’t. We all have our likes and dislikes about the way other people speak and everyone has something to say about ‘correct’ pronunciation. But how did all these accents come about and why do people feel so strongly about them?
Witty, authoritative and jam-packed full of fascinating facts, You Say Potato is a celebration of the myriad ways in which the English Language is spoken – and how our accents, in so many ways, speak louder than words.
Tickets: £5 (redeemable against book purchase. Refreshments provided)
Please book in advance – for tickets, call in at the shop or purchase online via our Eventbrite page.
If you can't make the event, but would like a signed & dedicated copy of You Say Potato, please let us know.

CHRIS HADFIELD - You Are Here
Wednesday 10th December 2014 12 noon (doors at 11.30am) at The Wynnstay Hotel, Church Street, Oswestry
This is a one-off opportunity to meet celebrated astronaut and You Tube sensation Chris Hadfield as he talks his new book, You Are Here: Around the World in 92 Minutes.
With his first book, An Astronaut’s Guide to Life, Chris Hadfield captured the nation’s imagination and rekindled everyone’s fascination with space. He gave us a glimpse of what life might be like as an astonaut, circling 220 miles above the earth. In his new book he shows us, through magnificent photographs of the world seen from above, exactly what it is like to look through a spaceship’s porthole.
In You Are Here, Hadfield creates a virtual orbit of Earth, giving us the really big picture: this is our home, from space. Through the photographs – many of which have never been shared – he unveils a fresh and insightful look at our planet.
Chris Hadfield was the first Canadian to walk in space. He flew four space missions and was Commander of the International Space Station as part of Expedition 35. During the mission he also gained popularity by chronicling life aboard the space station and taking pictures of the earth and posting them through social media to a large following of people around the world. His music video, a zero-gravity version of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” received over ten million views in its first three days online. His TED talk, delivered in March 2014, drew more than one million views in its first three weeks.
Don’t miss out on your chance to meet astronaut Chris Hadfield and ask him what it is really like to be in outer space!
Tickets £10 (includes illustrated talk, £5 off a signed copy of You Are Here & refreshments)
Please book in advance – for tickets call in at the shop or purchase online via our Eventbrite page.
If you can’t make the event, but would like a signed hardback copy of You Are Here, please let us know.

We should all support our local pub, none of us would want to lose it.
The Talbot restaurant has opened, we have eaten there twice now and the food has been of good quality and at reasonable price. Jake the chef came out to us on both occasions asking for feedback and is happy to do special meals to order if given 1-2 days notice. They all are really keen and eager to please.
The restaurant needs to be a success otherwise eventually Joules will lose patience and sell the place. They are obviously on a limited budget so in terms of refurbishment can’t compete with the likes of the Red Lion or the New Inn.
This is very useful feedback, lets all go along to the Talbot, whether for a pint or a meal and spread the word. We MUST keep our pub open.

PRESS RELEASE
Traders launch ‘The Big Market Art-Off Christmas Competition’
Shrewsbury market traders are launching a big art competition with cash prizes to create a festive backdrop to late-night shopping events in the lead up to Christmas.
Stallholders at the town’s market hall have thrown down the gauntlet to artists of all ages to produce large pictures on fabric on the theme of ‘Christmas in Shrewsbury’.
The Big Market Art-Off Christmas Competition will be judged during the town’s first late Christmas shopping evening of the year on Wednesday November 19 by a panel of professional artists from the Shropshire Visual Art Network which has a permanent gallery in the indoor market.
The winner will receive a £100 cash prize with a £50 cash prize going to the runner-up. Each entrant is being asked to use a piece of fabric or flat bed- sheet as a blank canvas for creating their potential master-piece.
“November 19 is the night of the Christmas lights switch-on in Shrewsbury. The market will be open until 9pm so we want to make it look extra special by being decorated in festive works of art,” said spokeswoman Heidi Butter.
“Stalls and restaurants will be open to gift hunters and evening diners and there will be live music including choirs, bands and solo performers. It will be a festive atmosphere.
“People can use any medium to create their work of art – paint, paper, foil, photos etc. We are really looking forward to seeing what people’s imagination can conjure up.”
People wanting to enter can obtain an entry form from the The Visual Art Network Gallery and the following stalls: The Pampered Pineapple & Deuxieme Chance, Thoughts, Urban Bikes UK, Gluten Free Living, Café AleOli, Beyond the Purple Door and L and E Designs. Forms can also be obtained by emailing the market site facilities manager Kate Gittins at kate.gittins@eujll.com.
All artworks must be returned to the same stallholders by 3pm on Saturday November 15. The winner will be announced at 8pm on November 19.
For further press information contact Sarah Hart on 01743 240112 or 0741 535 1318.
