The Willow Gallery has launched its new Spring / Summer programme of events including an inspiring selection of workshops and courses for all ages and experiences. The programme also features live performances from celebrated musicians including The Remi Harris Trio, Simply Saxes and Dan Walsh – not to be missed! Creative Writing II

How can you make images be felt more deeply for the reader?  How do you take  your writing to a deeper level?  An inspiring workshop for those who want to improve their writing, using the stimulus of art and movement.

Poems by Post with Emily Wilkinson
Saturday 11th April, 2.30 - 5pm
Get creative and poetic with your correspondence! In this drop-in workshop you can pen your own poem for someone special, or select one to send from Emily's poetry library. You can make your letters and postcards beautiful using art materials, collage and letter stamps. Bring addresses of friends, families and loved ones, plus postage stamps if you'd like to send your creations straight away.

Drawing the Figure the Italian Way with Max Baccanello
Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th April, 10am to 5pm
It will start with a series of short poses and then building up to much longer one. I will be doing demonstrations and showing people different techniques on how to draw quickly from life and then some slower and more detailed techniques. We shall start in pencil for the quick drawing and then go to italian charcoal for the longer poses. For the longer pose i shall be teaching the italian traditional life drawing techniques.
£120 including materials.
 
Colour Exploration with Tereska Shepherd

Discover the exciting properties of colour and tone whilst exploring a diverse range of painting and drawing skills using colour. Learn about the different aspects and experimentations of colour mixing whilst exploring a variety of subject matter including landscape, still life, textured surfaces, portraiture and abstraction. Investigate the works of contemporary and historical artists who use colour in a lively way.

En Guard! Fencing with Bridie Lloyd

An Introduction to sword fencing, learn the basics of this ancient marshal art. Using plastic training swords you will develop new skills and techniques in the fundamentals of sword fencing, which can be described as a lightning game of chess.

Batik on tissue with Jenny O'Leary
Saturday 2nd May, 10am to 4pm
Batik is a traditional technique using hot wax as a resist, on this one day course you will experiment by using the technique on tissue paper, combining it with bleach and inks to create exciting and inspiring effects. No experience is necessary just come and have fun!
£40 including all materials.

Guitar Courses with Chris Quinn
Beginners Guitar
8 Sessions on Mondays –  4th May – 22nd June, 6pm – 6.45
Join Chris Quinn for an 8 week course in playing guitar. Here you will learn basic chord shapes and the strumming and picking techniques that will get you playing in no time. Learn the 3 chord trick which opens up the possibility of playing literally thousands of songs. Learn some classic songs by The Beatles, Bob Dylan and more contemporary artists. You'll also learn how to easily read guitar music to leave you ready to explore your own favourite songs and styles. Accompanying this course are worksheets and online video tutorials so you can recap what everything you have learnt in your own time at home. Suitable for beginners, you must bring your own acoustic guitar!

Play Folk Guitar
8 Sessions on Mondays –  4th May – 22nd June,  7pm – 8pm 
Join Chris Quinn for an in depth 8 week course in Folk Guitar. This course will give you some great tips and skills for playing folk guitar. Chris has played at many of the UK's major folk festivals including Cambridge, Shrewsbury and Ely, he's been performing on the acoustic scene across Europe and the USA for over a decade and has worked and recorded with some of folk's best known artists. Over the 8 weeks you'll look at traditionalfolk music from both the British Isles and The USA, covering some of the most important styles of folk guitar, looking at accompanying the voice or another instrument and also as a lead instrument. You'll also learn some classic arrangements of well loved folk songs. Over the weeks you'll get a more in depth knowledge of the following styles and techniques:
• Bluegrass
• Celtic guitar
• Carter style
• DADGAD tuning for British folk
• Writing your own arrangements
Each 1 hour weekly group lesson is accompanied by worksheets and a pass to view the online video tutorials. All you need is a basic knowledge of chords to enrol, the course is aimed at improvers and intermediate level musicians.

The Art of Blues Guitar
8 Sessions on Mondays –  4th May – 22nd June,  8:15pm – 9:15pmAn 8 week course that opens the door to the art of playing acoustic blues. Learn the tricks to solo over the 12 bar blues progression in any key and how to lay down a solid blues rhythm to back up your voice or another musician. Study how blues guitar giants like Robert Johnson and Eric Clapton approached the blues and what gave them their authentic sound.

The pentatonic and blues scales
Understanding major, minor and 12 bar blues progressions
Great "stock" blues turnarounds, licks and solos

Leo Donaghy - Painting Like the Old Masters
This course is aimed at those with little experience in oil painting but it is not a necessity.
Over the four sessions we will look at the processes employed by the old masters.
Working from ground colour and initial sketches through to the finish paining, we will cover colour, palette choice, glazes, and the use of contemporary equipment to assist in the drying process.
By the end of the course you should have completed two small paintings and be confident to work alone.
A list of equipment will be sent to you two weeks prior to the course.

Enamelling with Pat Thatcher

The course is designed for all abilities especially people with little or no enamelling experience. You will be shown how to apply enamel powder and decorative media to copper and fuse it in a hot kiln. At the end of the workshop you will have created a piece of unique of art work in the form of either a small panel, pendant or earrings. The choice is yours.

Sculpture For Everyone: Wax, Wire And Paper Sculpture with Judy Macklin
4 Session: 11-05-2015 - 01-06-2015, 10am – 4pm
This module is designed as an introduction to the practical elements of working in three dimensions; using wire, wax and paper mache. Ideas will be initiated by sutdies of observational drawings set by the tutor and developed in a visual diary. You will be encouraged to investigate historical and contemporary references and explore drawing with wire, using a variety of drawing medium. Tutor demonstratoins will give practical techniques needed to realise and develop ideas using the mediums of wire, paper and wax.

Tapestry weaving: Windows on the natural world
with Irene Evison
Sunday 21st June, 10am - 4pm
Learn how to use simple tapestry weaving techniques to weave your own glimpse of the natural world. We will start indoors with a short introduction to tapestry weaving and Irene's approach to weaving, and will then venture outdoors. We'll explore views of nature at small and larger scales, trying out designs that work well for the medium of tapestry weaving - think colours, think shapes. And then it'll be time to start translating your  chosen view of nature into a small woven piece that you'll be able to take home with you at the end of the day.

Block Printing
with Drusilla Cole
Saturday 27th June, 10AM to 4.30pm
This deceptively simple technique uses Scratch Foam to produce prints on paper or card to create a look similar to Linocuts, but without the effort. It is suitable for beginners and improvers and interesting results can be achieved very quickly without the use of a press.
Colours may be layered one on top of another  and the medium also looks stunning used for strong black and white designs.
£45 including all materials.
Please bring an apron and ideas or photos to work from.

Make a monolith: make a cast glass garden sculpture in one day! with Tony Roberts
10.30am to 4pm (approx), on Sundays 28th June, 19th July & 16th August. Collect your monolith any time after three days (to allow it time to cool from the kiln).
Learn sand kiln casting by making your own three-foot high solid glass monolith sculpture for your garden.

Two day workshop
Saturday 25th July & Saturday 1st August
10am to 4pm each day
A beginners' course on how to approach taking good photographs with a digital SLR camera.
The course begins with an illustrated, fascinating explanation of how light and lenses work, showing how you can exploit them with your camera.
With plenty of opportunity to practise with support and guidance, the course then covers:
~ Description of the digital SLR camera, its features, controls and terminology
~ General setting up of the camera
~ Concentrating on using the camera in manual mode: practising focusing, control of depth of field, adjusting ISO rating, using metering and setting exposure, with review of photographs taken
~ Useful tips including what lenses to use and how to use zoom
~ Composition of shots for still and moving subjects
~ Explanation of resolution, colour balance, colour saturation, gamut and (electronic) noise
~ Basic portrait photography using available light and flash
~ Assignments and peer reviews
£55, students will need their own digital camera.
