Middle-aged Julieta (Emma Suarez) is about to move from Madrid to Portugal with her partner when a chance meeting re-ignites long-suppressed feelings about her estranged daughter. Back in the 1980s, the young punky blonde Julieta (Adriana Ugarte) meets handsome fisherman Xoan (Daniel Grao) during a fateful train journey. They go on to marry and have a child together. Based on a trio of linked short stories by the award-winning Canadian writer Alice Munro, Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar's beautifully crafted 20th film skilfully intertwines the stories of the older and younger Julieta as it explores the riddle of her life. Exquisitely staged with a superb jazz score by Alberto Iglesias, this intriguing, involving and visually stunning melodrama sees Almodovar returning to the themes of his most acclaimed films, such as 'Talk to Her' and 'Volver'. "Told in flashback over 30 years of guilt and grief, this tender melodrama based on three Alice Munro short stories is Pedro Almodóvar's best film in a decade." ***** The Guardian Director: Pedro Almodovar Cast: Emma Suarez, Adriana Ugarte, Rossy De Palma, Daniel Grao, Inma Cuesta, Michelle Jenner Spanish with English subtitles Run time: 99 mins | | | Arts Alive Present: The Shahnameh - The Epic Book Of Kings (12+) Thursday 3rd November 7:30pm Tickets: £10.00 Adult/£5.00 Under 18's Book online: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/date/273094 Or call the Box Office: 01691 238167 Be transported to the passion-filled world of heroic adventure and romance within a masterpiece of world literature with Xanthe Gresham Knight, dazzling performance storyteller, accompanied by the remarkable Kurdish Iranian musician, Arash Moradi. Six actors are brought together in a country house to put on an improvised version of The Cherry Orchard. As the old friends joyfully reunite all bodes well. But as they cast themselves in the play cracks begin to appear. They discuss the themes of the play which gradually begin to take over both the actors and their characters. What starts as an amusing weekend turns into a self-doubting and destructive scenario. Will they ever be able to be friends again? The Orchard takes its narrative form from the four-act structure of Anton Chekhov's 'The Cherry Orchard'. Its underlying dramatic driver is Pirandello's 'Six Characters in Search of an Author'. The Orchard uses the collision of these two great plays to draw out and exploit the emotions, symbolisms and resonances that take the actors on a journey from friendship to derision and contempt. From Chekhov it takes its emotive themes and from Pirandello its playful deconstruction. Filmed in real time over one weekend, starring Lucy Black, Paul Currier, Daisy Douglas, Dorothea Myer-Bennett, Richard Neale and Dan Winter. An original musical score by Towering Inferno's composer Andy Saunders is used to further emphasise the actors' moments of deep introspection. In 1983 he began keeping an audio diary. Over three years John recorded over sixteen hours of material, a unique testimony of loss, rebirth and renewal, excavating the interior world of blindness. Published in 1990, the diaries were described by author and neurologist Oliver Sacks as, 'A masterpiece… The most precise, deep and beautiful account of blindness I have ever read.' Following the Emmy Award-winning short film of the same name, the feature version of Notes on Blindnesstakes a creative approach to the documentary form. Actors lip-synch to the voices of the family, embedding John's original audio recordings within compelling cinematography and textured sound design. The result is a poetic and intimate story of loss, rebirth and transformation, documenting John's extraordinary journey into 'a world beyond sight'. Featuring a classic disco soundtrack (including the ever-funky title track by Rose Royce), the film is a hilarious snapshot of the care-free seventies. The shop was leased from Brian's late father, and when Brian discovers that Leonor is paying far below the market rent, he sets in motion a chain of events that threatens to rip the boys apart. In the Heat of the Night won five Oscars® in 1968, including Best Picture, Best Actor (for Rod Steiger), Best Screenplay and Best Editing. It's pure Loach, with a script by his regular screenwriter Paul Laverty, and follows the Daniel Blake (Dave Johns) of the title, a fifty-something carpenter living in Newcastle who, after suffering a heart attack, seeks to claim state benefits. Told by his NHS consultant that he's unfit for work, he applies for disability benefit. However, after a 'healthcare professional' appointed by the Department for Work and Pensions interviews him over the phone for just ten minutes, it's decided that he's ineligible. Humiliatingly labelled a scrounger when he is anything but, Daniel is forced to apply instead for jobseeker's allowance and comes up against further absurdities of the welfare state. Meanwhile, he befriends Katie (Hayley Squires) - a single mother to two children, and new to Newcastle - who's also suffering on the breadline. Overwhelmingly moving, I, Daniel Blake is a stark reminder of the profound injustices of life in contemporary Britain and the brutal inhumanity of the system, making it painfully clear that issues so often invoked theoretically in the media in fact result in real human suffering, which exists in plain sight. "A spare film, muted in colour - and all the more powerful and urgent for it." **** Time Out "I, Daniel Blake" is one of Loach's finest films, a drama of tender devastation that tells its story with an unblinking neorealist simplicity that goes right back to the plain spoken purity of Vittorio De Sica." Originally a performance based concept, the film evolved into something much more significant as Dominik delved into the tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album. Interwoven throughout the Bad Seeds' filmed performance of the new album are interviews and footage shot by Dominik. The result is stark, fragile and raw, and a true testament to an artist trying to find his way through the darkness.
