Ruyton XI Towns DAMSONS

Dear Blogger

RUYTON XI TOWNS DAMSONS

In the past, our village was famous for its damsons, at this time of the year people would come from miles around to marvel at the roads lined with the beautiful blossom.  Then, in the autumn the many hundreds of pounds of this delicious fruit were sold to dealers to be taken to Baschurch station and then onto jam factories in Hereford and Worcestershire and north to Manchester to be used for fabric dye.

The scene was so arresting that it was worth publishing a postcard showing the damsons on the Brownhill, with Red Rocks, and Rock Cottage  which is now gone.

We have been delighted that the potted up young damson trees in the nursery at Brownhill House, have now been bought in the last couple of days so perhaps once again we will see Damson Blossom adorning our streets.

See attached pictures of the damson blossom in the old postcard and at Brownhill House garden.
