Take a walk round Ruyton XI Towns

Dear Blogger

TAKE A WALK AROUND RUYTON XI TOWNS

Advice from Trevor Allison, Parish Council member for Rights of Way

Dear Ruytonians,

I am sure that some of you and your families are beginning to get a little frustrated by the current situation, to put it mildly. As you should be aware you are allowed to take exercise once a day locally, and I have done so almost every day since the restrictions came in, checking that all the Public Rights-of-Way are basically usable and the stiles clear. Also, most of you will already be aware that there are a considerable number of routes available to walkers on the Cliffe.

I am NOT going to suggest here where you might go for a change of local scenery, but I am willing to make suggestions of possible walks to anyone who has a reasonable sense of local geography and/or is a reasonable interpreter of Ordnance Survey maps and who contacts me. I am also willing to discuss all sorts of options over the phone if you supply me with your number.

HOW MUCH DO YOUR FAMILY KNOW ABOUT THE NAMED ROADS                                                          &  MAIN FEATURES IN OUR VILLAGE?

I can also supply scans at an interesting scale of the village itself and of O. S. maps of the locality. You might like to introduce your children to all the named roads and features of the village. With the reduced traffic currently, it is fairly safe to walk the main routes with those who have some understanding of traffic and road safety. They may even ask some questions you do not know the answers to; please forward their questions to me and I will try to answer them, I have lived here for 40 years and no one has walked more of the Parish than myself.

As I am over 70 I dare not offer to walk with you, but I am willing to help you and your family find a little more to do during this difficult time, but how you interpret the local exercise guidance from the Government is totally up to you.

Please remember though, it must only be with your family, NOT friends, and even when walking pass others with a gap of at least 2 metres.

Stay safe,

Trevor Allison

Some useful explanations of markings on the maps

93m means 93 metres above sea level, it is called a spot height, 112 is the highest point in John Hamlett`s Brownhill Fields

PAV which is short for Pavilion, by a Sports Pitch,

PW is Place of Worship i.e. Church/Chapel,

FB for footbridge,

PPG Sta is Pumping Station, for moving sewage towards the WaterTreatment Works which is mislabelled Sewage Works

ISS (in blue) is Issues, where water sometimes seeps out of the ground,

CG is Cattle Grid.

Some of the street names are shortened or not well placed and Hall Farm Grange, Dunning Close, Grove Court, the Quillets, Peverey Close, Marches Meadow and Mill Lane are not named. That is a start for people using the maps.
