One classic Rolls Royce, one vintage British couple, 5000 miles across modern-day India ... this is your last chance to join us on the journey with this gentle and insightful documentary.

Tucked away in the south of England, Rupert & Jan Grey have been living their lives the way they see fit. Rupert (66) is a practicing lawyer & photographer, Jan (66) a bereavement visitor. They have raised three daughters in an old drafty cottage and retirement is on the horizon.

At this pivotal moment, they are invited to a human rights festival in Bangladesh as guests of honor and they decide to drive there in their family car - a notoriously battered 1936 Rolls Royce. Rupert believes in sabbaticals not retirement, so they ship the Rolls to Mumbai and motor across India to Dhaka. They fall into company with tea-wallahs and maharajahs, dodge tribal conflicts and battle border officials ultimately landing their car in the hands of the Bangladeshi Customs.

Rupert & Jan are living proof you can live your dreams no matter how odd, wild or crazy they might be - a rare glimpse into a uniquely inspired expedition that redefines later-life. Side by side, they drove for six months and covered over 5000 miles. Though Rupert was at the wheel, Jan quietly propels the journey with a gentle strength and we witness their lasting love grow stronger through this incredible experience.

COPSHOP (15)

Friday 15th & Saturday 16th October  7:30pm

"Copshop feels like something Quentin Tarantino and John Carpenter might have dreamt up if they ever got together, particularly if they bumped into In Bruges director Martin McDonagh along the way." Mail On Sunday ***

On the run from a lethal assassin, a wily con artist devises a scheme to hide out inside a small-town police station—but when the hitman turns up at the precinct, an unsuspecting rookie cop finds herself caught in the crosshairs.

Screaming through the Nevada desert in a bullet-ridden Crown Vic, wily con artist Teddy Murretto (Frank Grillo) hatches a desperate plan to hide out from lethal hitman Bob Viddick (Gerard Butler): He sucker-punches rookie officer Valerie Young (Alexis Louder) to get himself arrested and locked up in a small-town police station. But jail can't protect Murretto for long. Viddick schemes his own way into detention, biding his time in a nearby cell until he can complete his mission. When the arrival of a competing assassin (Toby Huss) ignites all-out mayhem, mounting threats force Viddick to get creative if he wants to finish the job and escape the explosive situation.

"Echoes of Quentin Tarantino, the noir B-movies of the 1950s and a couple of iconic westerns are all swirling around inside this guilty pleasure cop flick from Joe Carnahan." Times UK ***

"A lean, mean, 70s-inspired action thriller." Observer

Exhibition On Screen: Raphael Revealed (PG)

Sunday 17th October 2:00pm

A welcome return to Exhibition On Screen with their new season of films, opening with Raphael Revealed.

Marking the 500th anniversary of Raphael's death, the greatest exhibition ever held of his works took place in Rome. Exhibition on Screen was granted exclusive access to this once-in-a-lifetime show. With over two hundred masterpieces, including paintings and drawings – over a hundred of which have been brought together for the first time – this major exhibition celebrates the life and work of Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino.
With unprecedented loans from the Louvre, Uffizi, National Gallery of Art, the Prado Museum and more, the exhibition and this film provide an unprecedented opportunity to see the breadth of Raphael's skill, creativity and ingenuity. Award-winning director Phil Grabsky provides a fresh look at this giant of the Renaissance, and shows why he is considered one of the all-time greats.

The film covers his life in Rome, and includes unique footage of the ancient Rome that was such a powerful influence, including rare footage of Nero's Golden House that Raphael himself visited. More than just a painter, Raphael was one of the most extraordinary artists of the Renaissance but is often misunderstood or mythologised. On the basis of this extraordinary exhibition in Rome, this film allows Raphael, for the first time, to be truly revealed.

''… the most influential of European artists and his works still speak to us today…" FT Weekend

PROXIMA (12A)
Oswestry Film Society Screening

Tuesday 19th October  7:30pm

French actor Eva Green (Casino Royale) gives a stunning performance as Sarah, a woman trying to balance her work as an astronaut preparing for a year-long stint on the ISS with her family life as mother to an eight-year-old daughter, Stella.  Filmed at actual european astronaut training facilities, 'Proxima' ignores the technical and focuses on the emotional, looking at the human cost to Sarah and Stella and how they reconcile ambition with family responsibilities.  A moving character study cum drama, 'Proxima' never loses sight of the mother and child relationship at the heart of Alice Winocour's beautiful film.

"Featuring an intimate, truly heartfelt performance by Eva Green, the film tackles issues of abandonment, desire, and a really understated look at how motherly love can never be put to words" High on Film

GAGARINE (12A)

Wednesday 20th & Thursday 21st October. 7:30pm

"By far and away our favourite film of the year so far, Gagarine is a unique film that will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions" - Ruth & Ian kinokulture cinema

The everyday wonders of the world around us dazzle in this thrilling feature debut, about a young Parisian whose dreams are far from Earthbound. Our favourite film of the year so far!

Yuri lives in Cité Gagarine, a vast housing project in Ivry-sur-Seine on the outskirts of Paris. It was opened in the 1960s by the famous Russian cosmonaut, after whom both the building and its young resident are named. Now in a state of disrepair, the building is to be torn down, but this once-thriving hotbed of leftist political activism still hosts a community of residents unhappy at having to leave. None more so than Yuri, who not only figures out a way to stay beyond the council-mandated evacuation order, but to create his own orbital spacecraft within it.

Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh have skilfully adapted their acclaimed short into an inventive, frequently funny and moving drama. The themes they contend with – racism, social and economic inequality, community action – are handled with an impressive lightness of touch and carried mostly by newcomer Alséni Bathily's accomplished central performance, allowing us to accompany Yuri on his increasingly otherworldly journey. Beautifully shot by Victor Seguin, Gagarine is a dazzling and wholly original take on modern-day city life.

"This terrific first feature from Fanny Liatard combines psychogeography with fantasy to create something rather unusual and lovely." **** Wendy Ide - The Observer

"Free of cliché, visually ingenious, Gagarine is a pleasure - pure magic realism, a homespun spectacular." *****
Danny Leigh - Financial Times

My Beautiful Laundrette remains ground-breaking in its bold exploration of issues of sexuality, race, class and generational difference.

Originally shot in 16mm for Channel 4 on a low budget, it was met with such critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Film Festival that it was distributed to cinemas and eventually became an international success.Heralded as one of Britain's most commercially and critically successful films of 1986, it earned Hanif Kureishi an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay as well as launching the career of Daniel Day-Lewis.

My Beautiful Laundrette's international success helped establish Channel 4's fledgling feature film production arm, Film on Four, and confirmed a move away from television single drama. In 1999 The British Film Institute ranked My Beautiful Laundrette the 50th greatest British film of the 20th century." BFI

"Superbly acted by Day-Lewis and Jaffrey, skillfully directed, My Beautiful Laundrette is timely, provocative and unique." **** Empire Magazine

Oliver Sacks: His Own Life + Before The Eruption (15)

Closing Film Shropshire Rainbow Film Festival

Sunday 24th October. 2:00pm

For our final screening of this year's Shropshire Rainbow Film Festival we are pleased to present this newly  released documentary 'Oliver Sacks: His Own Life' alongside our Short Film Official Selection Before The Eruption.

Oliver Sacks: His Own Life

Oliver Sacks: His Own Life explores the life and work of the legendary neurologist and storyteller, as he shares intimate details of his battles with drug addiction, homophobia, and a medical establishment that accepted his work only decades after the fact. Sacks, known for his literary works Awakenings and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, was a fearless explorer of unknown cognitive worlds who helped redefine our understanding of the brain and mind, the diversity of human experience, and our shared humanity.

The film features exclusive interviews with Sacks conducted just weeks after he received a terminal diagnosis, and months prior to his death in August 2015, and nearly two dozen deeply revealing and personal interviews with family members, colleagues, patients, and close friends, including  Jonathan Miller, Robert Silvers, Temple Grandin, Christof Koch, Robert Krulwich, Lawrence Weschler, Roberto Calasso, Paul Theroux, Bill Hayes, Kate Edgar, and Atul Gawande, among others. The film also draws on unique access to the extensive archives of the Oliver Sacks foundation.

"Oliver Sacks: His Own Life" is a moving portrait of a man taking deep stock of his life with great satisfaction and verve. It is, as Weschler says in the film, "a master class in how to die." Sacks was an odd duck with a beautiful affinity for other odd ducks, and as an odd duck, I admire that."  Kevin Crust - Los Angeles Times

Director: Ric Burns
