Dear Blogger,
Message from Kinokulture, Oswestry independent cinema.
Welcome To Our April Newsletter ... Yes, We are still Here! First & Foremost we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has expressed their concerns and given kind words of support to us over the possible future of kinokulture. The good news is that we are now working in consultation with the Independent Cinema Office and our colleagues at the BFI Film Audience Network to build a framework on how we can hand the cinema over into community ownership. Look out for more news on this in the future as we will be holding a public meeting in the coming months to explain how this will work and encourage expressions of interest. In the mean time we will continue to bring great cinema to you throughout this year from our current home at 9 Arthur Street. Throughout April we have a wonderful selection of one off screening events from across the globe including a new documentary about the Dalai Lama Never Forget Tibet, the wonderful Iranian film Winners & a special event around the new documentary Fashion Reimagined. Our mainstream programme includes Oscar winner The Whale, the family friendly animation Epic Tails, British Rom Com What's Love Got To do With It? And following sell out screenings at Borderlines Film Festival the return of Allelujah & Women Talking to our screen. We also bring you the quirky and loveable animation Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, the high octane craziness of Cocaine Bear and the beautifully animated Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman based on short stories by acclaimed Japanese author Haruki Murakami plus two more great films from the new team at Oswestry Film Society Bad Day at Black Rock and She Said. He soon realizes that despite his doubts, together, this team can go further than they ever imagined. "What makes Champions a treat is the deftness with which Mark Rizzo's script sidesteps sentimentality in favour of something more raucously truthful..." *** Mark Kermode Director: Bobby Farrelly Cast: Kaitlin Olson, Cheech Marin, Matt Cook, Woody Harrelson, Ernie Hudson US 2023 Run time: 2 hours 3 mins BOOK TICKETS FOR SATURDAY HERE BOOK TICKETS FOR SUNDAY HERE | | | Bad Day At Black Rock (PG) Oswestry Film Society Screening Tuesday 4th April 7:30pm A film high on suspense sees a one-armed stranger stepping off the train at the title-cited Black Rock, a tiny town possessing a terrible past that it desperately wants to keep secret. The great Spencer Tracy in the role of the stranger creates huge suspicion among the antagonistic and complicit locals. As Tracy digs deeper and the tension builds, the wrongs that have been done gradually become clear. Though essentially a crime-drama with the subtle feel of a modern-day western, this 1955 film was one of the first to recognise discrimination against Japanese-Americans in the second world war that the U.S. would rather have swept under the carpet. Continuing our season of well-known names in lesser-known roles, Tracy leads a cast that includes other big-hitters like Robert Ryan, Ernest Borgnine and a young Lee Marvin. Tracy's career spanned 40 years-plus at the top, often most notably for his acting partnerships with Katherine Hepburn. But his performance in Bad Day At Black Rock is a tour de force in a taut film that from start to finish doesn't waste a second of its run-time. Please note the film starts at 7:30pm there are no trailers at OFS screenings Run Time: 1 hour 21 mins FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OSWESTRY FILM SOCIETY & BOOK TICKETS HERE | | |
