Welcome To Our May Newsletter We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has expressed their concerns and given kind words of support to us over the future of kinokulture. The good news is that we are working with the Independent Cinema Office and our colleagues at the BFI Film Audience Network to build a framework on how we can hand the cinema over into community ownership. Over the coming months we will be consulting with other independent cinemas to explore different models and plan to hold a public presentation in August ... so watch this space! But what's coming up in May? We hear you ask ..... As the days grow longer and we yearn for a lovely warm breeze a whole host of exciting new releases are wafting our way starting off with the warm hearted British Asian family tale 'Little English' and our next Adventure Club screening, the immersive journey at high altitude 'Berg'. Also coming up in May are the tense thrillers 'How to Blow Up A Pipeline' and 'Cairo Conspiracy', Matt Damon & Ben Affleck bounce onto our screen with 'AIR', Jim Broadbent journeys by foot from South Devon to Berwick Upon Tweed in the delightful drama 'The Unlikely Pilgrimage Of Harold Fry', we explore lifelong friendships in the profoundly moving Alpine set drama 'The Eight Mountains' and the anarchic action comedy 'Polite Society' high kicks in at the end of the month. We are very pleased to see the return of Exhibition On Screen with 'Vermeer The Greatest Exhibition', our next outing with NT Live is the "scintillating, perfectly timed" new play by James Graham 'Best Of Enemies' and we have a special screening of the romantic comedy/drama 'Le Week-end' in partnership with Whittington Music Festival which will be accompanied by two short films with live scores directed by musicians performing in the festival. The team at Oswestry Film Society bring you two more classic films: the raucous comedy based on Michael Frayne's stage Play 'Noises Off' starring Michael Caine and Martin Scorsese's brilliant 'Taxi Driver'. May Film Screenings At kinokulture cinema 9 Arthur Street, Oswestry, Shropshire, SY11 1JN   Noises Off (PG) Oswestry Film Society Screening Tuesday 2nd May 7:30pm   The play must go on - but can it when the actors are feuding so much behind the scenes? Michael Caine is the director of a dreadful British farce touring America with hopes of making it big on Broadway. Among the cast are an insecure matinee idol (Superman Christopher Reeve), a fading star, a hot-tempered lothario, a short-sighted leading lady, a bubby air-head, and an alcoholic (suave Brit Demholm Elliott).  What could possibly go wrong? The film opens with the final dress rehearsal before opening night, with an unfinished set and the cast still forgetting lines, missing cues, and mishandling props. Caine is reduced to cajoling, yelling at, and pleading with them to get things right.  Complicating matters are the personal problems and backstage relationships of the cast and crew, which are simmering under the surface during rehearsal but erupt into the open as the play works its way across the country. Based on Michael Frayn's hugely successful stage play of the same name, Noises Off is a raucous romp that will leave you with a big smile on your face from witty lines, madcap events and on-screen frenzy. A laugh-out-loud story of a dysfunctional Punjabi family in the pressure cooker life of a terraced suburban home in Slough. Newly arrived from India, naive Simmy has come to marry the family's eldest son Raj, who shockingly does a runner, leaving Simmy locked in the house by her domineering mother-in-law. However, Simmy is smarter than she appears, and soon enlists the support of the family's disgruntled in-laws, including a sugar crazed, diabetic grandpa and dangerous, but hot, brother in law, fresh out of jail. Together they plan Simmy's big escape. Adventure Club: BERG (12A) Thursday 4th May 7:30pm A truly immersive cinematic experience A journey at high altitude seen through the eyes of three mysteriously connected hikers. After their coincidental meeting we follow these three on their personal odysseys. The levels of concentration they exhibit in trying to avoid mistakes makes their experience of the overwhelming landscape even more intense. BERG is a visual experience of a vast mountain landscape and the insignificance of man in it. A trip of concentrated black and white images with a minimalistic soundtrack forms a primal memory of a universal mythical mountain. The film opens with a series of stones, rocks and peaks, sometimes wide, sometimes in close up. Shadows moving over the surfaces. Your eyes follow the lines, the holes that have eroded over the years. You lose your sense of scale. Suddenly emerging small black human figures give away the real proportions. The weather conditions are getting worse. Rising and hanging fog. Thunderstorm and falling rain. Huge clouds overwhelm the peaks. A roaring helicopter as a sign of danger. Dated film footage of a rescue team during salvages after fatal accidents, suddenly interrupts the majestic flow of the silent landscape. Loner and traumatised Vietnam veteran Travis Bickle (De Niro) becomes disgusted with the crime and urban decay he witnesses in his New York cab, and grows increasingly detached from reality as he dreams of cleaning up the city. When Travis meets pretty campaign worker Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), he becomes obsessed with the idea of saving the world, first plotting to assassinate a presidential candidate, then directing his attentions towards rescuing 12-year-old prostitute Iris (Foster). Stylistically, the film is a cinematic big-screen experience as famed director Martin Scorsese shows off his famed talents as a filmmaker and storyteller, creating stunning visuals with the help of cinematographer Michael Chapman. It also spawned a classic cinema quote: "You talkin' to me?" Jeremy Sams who composed the soundtrack has written a new suite based on the original score which will be performed at Whittington Church as part of 'From Bach to Bollywood: A Night At The Movies' on Friday 19th February. Before the main feature presentation we will be screening two short films with live scores directed by musicians performing in the festival. Le Week-end The third feature collaboration between Roger Michell and writer Hanif Kureishi (after The Mother and Venus), Le Week-end sees Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan's couple spend their wedding anniversary in Paris. However, the romantic city soon becomes a backdrop to bitter disputes over the state of their lives. Kureishi's wonderful script and the excellent performances help balance the tone between comedy and drama, while Michell celebrates the city's rich cinematic heritage. VISIT OUR WEBSITE HERE OTHER NEWS  Journeyman - the Art of Steve Dilworth  A book by Georgina Coburn For those of you who came along to our premiere screening of 'Stuff The World Is Made Of' the beautiful documentary about Harris based sculptor/maker Steve Dilworth we have some exciting news to share. After 5 years of research, Georgina Coburn's book 'Journeyman – The Life and Art of Steve Dilworth' is ready for publication. The plan is to release the book in time for Dilworth's autumn exhibition at the Pangolin Gallery in London.  "When I began my research in 2014, I wanted to answer the question of what makes a Dilworth? His work is powerful and its effect on many people, lasting and profound. In Dilworth's objects, as so often in life, what is most valuable is hidden inside. His art holds nature close, in ways our global consumer culture has too long discarded. I think what Dilworth's art connects us to has increasing urgency. The intention behind it and the way that his work is integrated into peoples' lives is unlike anything else in contemporary art. Dilworth's work is a living example of why art matters and acknowledgement of his importance in the history of Art is long overdue.
