For centuries much of Europe was in the hands of the very peculiar Habsburg family. An unstable mixture of wizards, obsessives, melancholics, bores, musicians and warriors, they saw off – through luck, guile and sheer mulishness – any number of rivals, until finally packing up in 1918. From their principal lairs along the Danube they ruled most of Central Europe and Germany and interfered everywhere – indeed the history of Europe hardly makes sense without them. Readers who discovered Simon Winder’s genius for telling wonderful stories of middle Europe with Germania will be delighted by the eccentric and fascinating stories of the Habsburgs and their world. Tickets: £15 single / £20 couple (includes a signed hardback copy of Danubia, plus refreshments) Please book in advance - for tickets, call in at the shop, give us a call or send us an email. If you are unable to attend the event but would like a signed and dedicated copy of Danubia, please contact us. | Book of the Month - July Our Book of the Month for July is Perfect by Rachel Joyce the eagerly awaited follow-up to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. "Rachel Joyce's second novel is a beautifully rendered tale with keenly observed characters and precise prose captivating the reader from the first page to the last. The use of two parallel story lines gradually reveal the impact and repercussions of a seemingly innocuous event on the lives of lead character Byron, his family and friends. Be prepared for a twist at the end! Probably one of my favourite books of the year so far" - Carrie Special Offer: We're offering a free coffee and cake with every copy purchased. For any Rachel Joyce fan, we have signed first edition copies in stock. | | Booka News Autumn Season of Events We are busy planning our Autumn season of events and are really excited with how things are beginning to come together.
