The Feltonians - new members always welcome

Message from Colleen Hughes

THE FELTONIANS AFTERNOON CLUB

at the Methodist Hall, West Felton opposite the playing field.

SINCE ITS INCEPTION ON 3rd MARCH 1976, the club has met on Tuesdays at 2pm,

that’s 37 years of friendship, fun, tea and biscuits!

The Methodist chapel hall is a warm and cosy place; some members like Whist, some like Scrabble, Draughts or Chess, some like craft work, all like a chat.

Summer outings and occasional meals are organised - the members make all their own decisions and do whatever they fancy. Friendships are made and the Tuesday club date is looked forward to as a regular feature of each week.

GENTLEMEN and LADIES - NEW MEMBERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME

Why not come along with a friend? Bring your knitting, or books/magazines to discuss and swap or … whatever else you would like to do for a couple of hours every week whilst making friends with your neighbours. Who knows - you might have them all up dancing after a few weeks!

The opportunity is there for you to join and make the club whatever you want it to be

and, it is hoped, carry it on for another thirty years.

Art Exhibition at The Qube, Oswestry

Elsi Eldridge’s Paintings Return to Oswestry

The next exhibition at the Qube Gallery Oswestry, opening on October 19th, features the paintings and drawings of Mildred Elsi Eldridge who painted much of her work, during the 1940 and 50s, whilst teaching in Oswestry and at Moreton Hall. A star pupil at the Royal College of Art, whose work was admired by Sir Stanley Spencer, she successfully exhibited her one-woman show at London’s Beaux Arts Gallery in 1937.  However, she then gave up the London art scene and opted instead for the beautiful countryside of the local borderlands.

Whilst lodging in Chirk she met, and later married, R S Thomas a young curate who was to become the foremost Welsh poet of the 20th Century.  Elsi was a prolific artist reputedly producing, at one time, a painting every fourteen days many of which she gave away or sold to support the family finances.  “There must paintings in and around the Oswestry area, work she gave to friends and acquaintances” said Laurel Roberts CO of Qube “we should love to hear from anyone who owns a painting by Elsi.”

Elsi illustrated and wrote children’s books and illustrated the dust cover of R S Thomas’s volume of poems ‘Stones from the Field’ in 1947. Her work draws strong inspiration from wild life and she developed a passion for natural history illustration producing copious numbers of drawings of birds, animals, butterflies and moths some of which were published by Medici cards. Possibly her greatest achievement was the huge mural commissioned for the Orthopaedic Hospital at Gobowen, “The Dance of Life” which is now permanently installed at Glyndwr University with the support of Arts Council Wales.

After her marriage, Elsi’s reputation as an artist was overshadowed by the critical acclaim awarded to the poetry of R S Thomas her husband. “We hope this exhibition will demonstrate to local people what a considerable talent Elsi was in her own right” said Trudi Graham arts adviser to Qube, “ she was a major female artist of the 20th Century and there must be many people in the locality who remember her.” This Qube Gallery exhibition is one of a number which are featuring, during 2013, the work of under-recognised female artists. The exhibition will feature Helen Williams-Ellis’s engaging film ‘Who Was Mrs R S Thomas’.

The exhibition runs for a month, anyone wanting further information or who wish to talk about Elsi, should call Qube on 01691 656882 email info@qube-oca.org.uk or pop in.

Pumpkin carving at the Darwin Shopping Centre

Message from Alistair Syme.

Youngsters invited to learn pumpkin carving for Halloween

Shrewsbury’s busy Darwin Shopping Centre has gone pumpkin potty as it gears up for a spooktacular Halloween celebration.

They’ve taken delivery of a pile of giant pumpkins and will be staging special half-term Halloween pumpkin carving classes at a workshop at the centre on Wednesday, October 30.

The Shrewsbury Shopping Centres’ community co-ordinator, Maggie Love, has also kitted herself out with genuine American-style safety pumpkin parers and is issuing an invitation to local youngsters under 12 to get creative.

As well as the pumpkin carving workshop on Halloween Day, Thursday, October 31, the Centres will be staging a special Trek and Treat fancy dress event attended by the Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor John Tandy.

He will lead the children on tour of participating stores which will be handing out goodies before judging the fancy dress competition with prizes for five to eight and nine to 12 age groups.

Maggie Love said: “It’s going to be great fun and we’ve already got a fantastic window display at the community unit on the Darwin Centre’s Middle Level which is where we’ll be carving the pumpkins.

“The pumpkin-carving workshop will be from 11am to 4pm on Wednesday and they’re something I’ve been doing for ten years and I use a lot of American tools and patterns.

“Marks and Spencer have done me a good deal and donated 30 pumpkins as well and we’ve got our own pumpkin patch here in a special window display at the Darwin Centre.

“When the pumpkin is carved it becomes a Jack’o’Lantern and the legend is that Jack is a lost soul and the light in the pumpkin guides him safely home so it’s a very positive thing.”

Thursday will see the Mayor lead the Trek and Treat parade to which youngsters are invited to come in fancy dress and the Mayor will judge the age group competitions with the winners getting a tasty chocolate prize from Pride Hill Centre store Green Ginger.

Kevin Lockwood, Manager of the Darwin, Pride Hill and Riverside Shopping Centres, said: “We’ve got lots of stores taking part in the Darwin and Pride Hill Centres and as it’s half term we’re hoping for a really good turnout.

Golden Guitars Music Shop opens in Pride Hill Centre

Message from Alistair Syme.
  GOLDEN GUITARS MUSIC SHOP
opens in Pride Hill Centre
, Shrewsbury

A guitarist who has played with chart-toppers The Specials and Dexy’s Midnight Runners has opened Golden Guitars, a music store in Shrewsbury’s busy Pride Hill Shopping Centre.

Rob Cook-Williams and his band are still regulars on the pub and club circuit in Shropshire and Mid Wales and the 40-year-old is currently working on a CD of his self-penned songs.

Rob and his wife, Karen, who runs the Golden Lion, in Llandysilio, near Welshpool, also operates a thriving mail order music business but the Pride Hill Centre venture is is a first for him.

“I’m a song-writer and guitarist myself so I know the music business really well and I’m also keen to support local artists and bands and hope to have their music on sale here as well.

“I have a full range of guitars and other musical instruments and equipment and accessories available either here or to order and we’re agents for Marshall amps which are the big name in music systems.

“Even though I am a guitarist and we sell guitars and do guitar set-ups and restringing, that’s not all we do. We’re able to supply all sorts of musical instruments and accessories, from drums to wind instrument reeds.

Rob’s band sees him on guitar alongside ex-Renaissance drummer Phil Beaumont and bass player Brian Snelling, who played with jazz giant Henry Mancini back in the 60s. He also plays with another local band, White Noise, and guests at live gigs with other groups.

“I’ve played in bands and I’ve taught and I used to do demos for guitar makers at events like Music Live at the NEC. I’ve even played with members of The Specials, Selecter and Dexy’s Midnight Runners.

“The beauty of it is that you can take up the guitar at any age. Lots of people decide to learn when they’re in their 40s, 50s or 60s because they’ve got more time than they had when they were young and guitars are now so reasonably priced.

“I’ve even taught a lady of 76 to play the mandolin so age is no barrier. If you’ve got the music in you then it will come out.”

The young Rob graduated from a steel-string acoustic Spanish-style guitar – “so big I could hardly get my ams round it” – to an electric guitar at the age of 16 and was soon in his first band.

“I’m self-taught and I teach guitar as well and we give lessons in the store or privately. We’ve even got booths in the store if you want your lesson in private.

“Guitars are so much better and more affordable today. For about £100 you can have a perfectly good, playable guitar and the quality control is much better than it was.

“Years ago if you paid that much then it would sounds terrible and bits would be falling off.”

His own pride and joy is a vintage Fender Stratocaster, the first choice axe of guitar gods like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, and Rob said: “I’ve tried others and they’ve been good but I’ve always gone back to the old Strat – it’s usually the one I play at gigs.”

How the Mailing List can help

THE LOST WALLET

11.22am, yesterday, Sunday 20th October
Eric sent me an email saying he had found a wallet on the Brownhill, could I                         please circulate the Mailing List.

12.12  I send an email round the Mailing saying a wallet had been found with the name
                    Nathan Russel Wood.

12.34  I received an email from Les Foster, the Vicar, saying he knew Nathan and                             would go to his house to tell him his wallet had been found.

I received a phone call from a very grateful Nathan`s father and was able to give him Eric`s                     phone number.

13.15  I received an email from Eric to say he had spoken to Nathan who would be calling                         round to pick up the wallet.

Nathan`s Dad, Darren, was so impressed that he will be joining the mailing list as soon as his computer is repaired.

I think that is pretty impressive, I hope you do too.  Please tell your friends & neighbours this story and get them to email  brownhill@eleventowns.co.uk and I will put them on the Mailing list

Meet the Artist

A Message from Debbie Marais, Oswestry Library

A chance to meet Mary Cunnah,  a local artist whose exhibition

                                            “BOUNTIFUL INHERITANCE”

is on show until the beginning of November in the Borderland Visual Artists gallery at Oswestry Library.

Meet the artist   11am-1pm  Wednesday 30 October   Free drop-in event  Oswestry Library

"Bountiful Inheritance" concerns the settlement of Sycharth which was the home of Welsh Prince Owain Glyndwr in the C14th depicted in oil paint, etchings and collagraphs by local artist Mary Cunnah."

The works on display are part of an exhibition entitled  "Bountiful Inheritance" and refers to the settlement of Sycharth in the Cynllaith Valley which Owain Glyndwr inherited on the death of his father. In the 14th century the whole valley was like a Garden of Eden. Thanks to the famous travelling Welsh poet Iolo Gogh we know great details about the fortified  house, settlement and the surrounding area. However in 1403 Prince Hal destroyed it all by fire and now little remains of that fabulous estate but the mound and bailey in the middle of a field.
