Arguably one of the finest documentaries of recent years and one of the best music documentaries ever made, Sugar Man is testament to the old adage that 'truth is stranger than fiction'. Having recorded two critically acclaimed, but commercially unsuccessful albums in the early 1970s, Detroit songwriter Sixto Roderiguez seemingly disappeared, his fate unknown. Subsequently his music became the inspiration for a generation of young South Africans, leading to some of his most dedicated fans attempting to discover what had become of their music hero. Only the hardest of hearts could fail to be won over by this beautifully crafted film and its superb soundtrack.

The critics say "Music fans will love this indie documentary. Try to avoid Googling him before you watch, though."  Empire Magazine

We say "Long a favourite documentary of Tom's, this mixes a detective film with an underdog returning story.  Irresistible"

Swiss director Claude Barras's debut feature is a beautifully rendered, stop-motion animation, adapted by the gifted screenwriter Céline Sciamma (Girlhood, Tomboy) from Giles Paris's eponymous novel.

The improbably nicknamed Courgette (Schlatter) is a shy, bug-eyed kid, consigned to an orphanage after his alcoholic mother's sudden death. However, Courgette's unhappiness is tempered by the kindly policeman who escorts him to his new home and adventures with the other misfit children – a football-loving tomboy, shy Alice and an introverted dinosaur fan – are cleverly wrought to show how lessons learnt can shape a child's character and prepare them for adult life.

The story of the growing pains of youngsters is lovingly told, the animation and colouring terrific - all brilliantly befitting the narrative of a film that's much more than simply kids' entertainment.

"A stop motion stunner, as heartbreaking as it is beautiful" **** The Telegraph

"Claude Barras's Oscar-nominated debut, a lovely stop-motion animation set in a French orphanage, is expressive, subtle and beguiling." **** The Guardian

Hampstead is a UK drama film inspired by the true story of "Harry Hallowes", a 70-year-old Irish tramp who gained squatters rights to property in Hampstead  London UK, valued at over 2 million pounds back in 2007.

In this charming and often very funny film version of the story, Irish actor Brendan Gleeson plays the role of "Donald" an unkempt man living alone in a ramshackle shed in a secluded corner of the Hampstead heath. His tranquil life is shattered when property developers begin to use strong arm tactics to get him evicted. Then along comes American widow Emily Walters (Diane Keaton) who helps him fight for his home.

The team who brought you Despicable Me and the biggest animated hits of 2013 and 2015, Despicable Me 2 and Minions, returns to continue the adventures of Gru, Lucy, their adorable daughters—Margo, Edith and Agnes—and the Minions.

Gru and the Minions are back in 'Despicable Me 3', and they're meeting a new (if slightly familiar) face: Gru's identical twin brother Dru. Well, almost identical – Dru has hair.

He's successful, handsome and incredibly wealthy, and fixated on his family's legacy of being supervillains. He wants Gru's help, but Gru has left the life of crime behind. Just maybe, though, the promise of one last heist might be too much to resist…

The smash hit franchise returns with 'Despicable Me 3', with Steve Carell once again providing the voice of Gru. And this time, he's Dru too.

Meet Baby (yes, Baby), a talented young getaway driver with a banging iPod playlist. Suffering from chronic tinnitus, Baby (Elgort) rarely pulls the earbuds out of his ears, and sets up every getaway to a specific tune. When Baby's forced to join one last job for a crime boss (Spacey) he's indebted to, he risks his life, freedom and newfound love. The decay of Rome reaches violent depths in Shakespeare's most bloody play. Titus is a ruler exhausted by war and loss, who relinquishes power but leaves Rome in disorder. Rape, cannibalism and severed body parts fill the moral void at the heart of this corrupt society.

Shakespeare's gory revenge tragedy presents us with murder as entertainment, and, as the body count piles up, poses questions about the nature of sexuality, family, class and society.

Blanche McIntyre returns to the RSC to direct Shakespeare's brutal revenge tragedy after her debut directing The Two Noble Kinsmen (2016).

Emma Thompson, Brendan Gleeson and Daniel Brühl star in Alone In Berlin, a powerfully moving, true-life thriller set in Second World War Berlin, directed by acclaimed actor turned filmmaker Vincent Perez (La Reine Margot), based on the international bestseller Every Man Dies Alone / Alone In Berlin by revered German novelist Hans Fallada.

Berlin, 1940. The city is paralyzed by fear. Otto and Anna Quangel are a working class couple living in a shabby apartment block trying, like everyone else, to stay out of trouble under Nazi rule. But when their only child is killed fighting at the front, their loss drives them to an extraordinary act of resistance. They start to drop anonymous postcards all over the city attacking Hitler and his regime. If caught, it means certain execution.

Soon their campaign comes to the attention of the Gestapo inspector Escherich and a murderous game of cat-and-mouse begins. But the game serves only to strengthen Otto and Anna's sense of purpose and a renewed love for each other. Slowly their drab lives and marriage are transformed as they unite in their quiet but profound rebellion.

When university professor Deborah E. Lipstadt includes World War II historian David Irving in a book about Holocaust deniers, Irving accuses her of libel and sparks a legal battle for historical truth. With the burden of proof placed on the accused, Lipstadt and her legal team fight to prove the essential truth that the Holocaust occurred. Based on the book "History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier."

The critics say "Denial has become painfully timely. In an era when 'fake news!' is a common rejoinder to any information one doesn't wish to hear and even the White House will confidently reframe lies as "alternative facts"  Empire Magazine.

We say  "We all love a courtroom drama, and with Rachel Weisz, Timothy Spall and Tom Wilkinson involved, this is bound to be a solid thought provoking film."

As part of our 'In Focus' strand of screenings we are very pleased to present this free screening of Asunder with a Q&A session from Director/Co Producer Esther Johnson.

Asunder tells the story of what happened to an English town during the First World War, with almost all of its men abroad fighting and its women and children left behind. The North East was in the front line, thanks to its shipyards and munitions factories.

Using archive and contemporary footage and audio, Asunder collages the stories of people from Tyneside and Wearside to uncover what life was like on the home front, with bombs falling on Britain for the first time, conscientious objectors sentenced to death, and women working as doctors, tram conductors and footballers. The narrative moves from an Edwardian golden era, in which sport grew in popularity and aircraft and cars pointed to a bright new future, to a war that horrifically reversed this progress. In the Battle of the Somme, commencing on 1 July 1916, British, French and German armies fought one of the most traumatic battles in military history. Over the course of just four months, more than one million soldiers were captured, wounded or killed in a confrontation of unimaginable horror.

The narration for the film is voiced by journalist Kate Adie, with the actor Alun Armstrong as the voice of the Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette.

A film by Esther Johnson, with a soundtrack composed by Sunderland's Mercury-nominated Field Music and Newcastle's Warm Digits, performed with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and The Cornshed Sisters.

The bourgeois and extremely eccentric Van Peteghem family - among them Juliette Binoche, Fabrice Luchini, and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi - have settled in for another summer at their cliff-top villa overlooking the picturesque Slack Bay. Their leisurely rhythm of sunbathing and seaside constitutionals is soon interrupted by the arrival of two bumbling inspectors investigating a string of tourists gone missing (and serving full-on Keystone Kops).

As the macabre mysteries mount and love blossoms between the family's genderqueer teen and the son of a local fisherman, Binoche and company ratchet the slapstick up to eleven. It's no wonder director Bruno Dumont (Li'l Quinquin, Camille Claudel 1915) cites Peter Sellers, Monty Python, and Laurel and Hardy as cinematic influences for his delightful foray into winking, absurdist farce.

Combining savage archetypes with spot-on wit, Slack Bay is a fun, peculiar romp with deeper conceits lurking beneath the surface. Beautifully shot with a high contrast palette, the movie has a hyperreal quality that makes it Dumont's most polished work.

"Bruno Dumont's wacky, macabre crime comedy, starring Juliette Binoche and Fabrice Luchini, is very strange and very funny" **** The Guardian

Oscar-winner (for his 2001 animated short Father and Daughter) Michaël Dudok de Wit's exquisite wordless animation - his first feature - is a co-production between Wild Bunch and Studio Ghibli and premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes this year where it won universal acclaim.

It tells the story of a man marooned on a desert island populated by turtles and crabs but devoid of any other human life. He tries desperately to escape until one day he meets a strange, giant red turtle and begins a friendship that will change his life.

Dudok de Wit mixes hand and computer-drawn animation throughout and it's as beautiful as you would expect from a film on which Ghibli's Isao Takahata served as artistic producer, with imagery of the sea and the island's flora and fauna brought vividly to life. Its daring lack of dialogue adds to, rather than subtracts from the rich ideas that permeate the film: about nature, human expectation and acceptance, and the power of companionship. Unforgettable.

How much of your own life are you willing to risk?

Laura Poitras, Academy Award-winning director of CITIZENFOUR, returns with her most personal and intimate film to date. Filmed over six years, Risk is a complex and volatile character study that collides with a high-stakes election year and its controversial aftermath. With The Graduate, Dustin Hoffman challenged conventional notions of the Hollywood leading man and became an overnight star. Hoffman's second film role earned him an Oscar nomination and sees him playing Benjamin Braddock, a directionless graduate romantically entangled with both the predatory Mrs Robinson and her daughter Elaine, his true love.

A huge financial and critical success, the film turned Hoffman into an overnight sensation and proved to Hollywood that leading men didn't need conventional looks in order to carry a film. With America's youth feeling uncertainty and doubt partly due to the country's deepening involvement in Vietnam, The Graduate spoke to them and a significant worldwide audience.

As the film reaches its 50th anniversary, we are delighted to screen this newly restored 4K digital print.

Two French acting greats, Catherine Deneuve and Catherine Frot, share the screen for the very first time in The Midwife, a bright and charming drama about old acquaintances and new beginnings from celebrated director Martin Provost (Séraphine, Violette). Conscientious, inhibited and perhaps a little self-righteous, midwife Claire (Frot) is stuck in a rut. After years of placing other people before herself, she's worried she might have been left behind.

One day, however, an unexpected phone call changes everything. The call is from her father's former mistress, Béatrice (Deneuve), a capricious free spirit who's been off-grid since she walked out on them over three decades ago. As circumstances reunite these two polar-opposites, flighty Béatrice is forced to consider her responsibilities, while uptight Claire finally learns to let go of her troubles.

Sparkling with humour, tenderness and mischievous charm, Provost's film provides a perfect canvas for its tour-de-force lead performances. A bold and buoyant two-hander, The Midwife is a bewitching and unapologetic celebration of life's loves, losses and endless fresh surprises.

"It's Catherine v Catherine as two French acting powerhouses come face to face in the sensitive and and emotionally intelligent family drama. Not only does this French drama pass the Bechdel Test with flying colours, it also goes to show that the ordinary lives of ordinary people can be the most moving thing to watch."

The incredible Billie Piper (Penny DreadfulGreat Britain) returns in her Evening Standard Best Actress award-winning role.

A young woman is driven to the unthinkable by her desperate desire to have a child in Simon Stone's radical production of Lorca's achingly powerful masterpiece. The unmissable theatre phenomenon sold out at the Young Vic and critics call it 'an extraordinary theatrical triumph' (The Times) and 'stunning, searing, unmissable' (Mail on Sunday). Billie Piper's lead performance is described as 'spellbinding' (The Evening Standard), 'astonishing' (iNews) and 'devastatingly powerful' (The Daily Telegraph).

Set in contemporary London, Piper's portrayal of a woman in her thirties desperate to conceive builds with elemental force to a staggering, shocking, climax.

May 1940, in the early days of the Second World War 400,000 Allied soldiers were trapped on the beach at 'Dunkirk', surrounded by the German army and they needed to be evacuated.

France had been overrun, and the Allied army had been defeated and trapped. In a desperate effort to save the troops, more than 800 boats – from military ships to tiny civilian fishing boats – came to help with the evacuation that would become known as the Miracle of Dunkirk.

This dramatic depiction of the Dunkirk evacuation is helmed by Christopher Nolan, who has wowed audiences with Interstellar and the Dark Knight Trilogy, where he resurrected Batman for a new generation.

Starring Tom Hardy as Farrier, One Direction's Harry Styles as Alex, and a host of other Hollywood A-listers– including Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance – Dunkirk promises to be the blockbuster of summer 2017.
