Meeting the artist
At our opening, we were honoured to welcome acclaimed portrait artist Daniel James Yeomans who gave an informal talk reflecting his journey as an artist and what has inspired his work. BELOW: Classically-trained Daniel alongside his own self-portrait and latest portrait, Dystonia & Me; The Renaissance of Self
RIGHT: Daniel and sitter Tim Edmunds whose portrait is being sold to raise money for neurological research. Employing traditional painting techniques and always expressing the power of light, Daniel's output also overflows into landscape. You can contact him directly at Danyeomans@mac.com.
PAINTING DAY - Saturday October 28
Daniel will be returning to the Willow on Saturday, October 28, setting up his easel INSIDE THE GALLERY and running his studio from here for the day. He will talk about his style of painting and will be creating a work in traditional oils. Watch Daniel paint, ask questions and engage in the creation of the art work with questions and conversation.
- All welcome -
Weaving without rules
Also at our launch, a warm welcome return was given to textile artist Jan Wallis who came in to talk about the inspiration and processes behind her new work, River  Sea  Sky. Around 30m long, the piece was woven freestyle in one continuous piece using a Japanese SAORI loom. This was enjoyed by all who attended.

SAORI is a hand-weaving philosophy that emphasises creativity, improvisation and random beauty, free from the traditional concepts and rules of weaving. Developed in Japan in the 1960s by a remarkable woman, Misao Jo, today it is practised extensively all around the globe.

Jan's work, in a blend of colours and yarns, is a fine example of hand-weaving as an art form, conveying her vision of a river flowing over a waterfall and its eventual union with the sea. The words of a poem that she began composing during the process of weaving are lettered in the sky at journey's end.
