Have your cake & East It at Derwen College

Message from Elened Watson, Derwen College

Have your cake and eat it at Derwen College

Shropshire students have been stirring up some treats in the kitchen, creating dozens of different flavours iced treats for Cupcake Week.

Hospitality students at specialist Derwen College, near Oswestry, have been experimenting with fruit, spices, chocolate and toppings to come up with their favourite sponge and icing combinations. The best tasting cakes will be served up at the college's Garden Café from 17th-23rd September.

The home-made cupcakes, devised and hand-made as part of students' curriculum work, will be on sale for just £1 at the college's café.

Flavours on offer will include lemon and poppy seed, chocolate cookie, salted caramel, gingerbread & cinnamon, raspberry cream, vegan red velvet and vegan 'funfetti'. There will also be a lactose-free coconut and daily gluten-free specials available every day.

Derwen College Food, Drink & Events Manager Nina Price said that staff and students had thoroughly enjoyed trying out all the different flavoured cupcakes.

She said: "It has been fun to support Cupcake Week, and for students to create, produce and bake their own flavour combinations. We also enjoyed tasting and evaluating which cakes would work best for customers.

"We hope visitors come and see us during Cupcake Week; they can have their cake and eat it in the knowledge that they're supporting Derwen College students in their learning."
