View this email in your browser Welcome To the August Edition Of the Kinokulture Newsletter Summer has arrived and we have a a great selection of films coming up this month from the brand new 4K restoration of 'Mandabi' (the first time this masterpiece of African cinema has been released in the UK) to the film adaptation of Lin Manuel Miranda's hit Broadway show 'In the Heights' alongside family entertainment from 'Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds' and the bittersweet love story 'Supernova' with stand out performances from Stanley Tucci & Colin Firth. This month also sees the return of our Beacon Film Festival where our Young Film Programmers celebrate a diversity of British & independent World Cinema from classics through to new releases and special film treats for the little ones with their week long takeover of our screen. Update on the lifting of Coronavirus restrictions We are still encouraging our customers, visitors and staff to wear face coverings when entering & moving around the building but these can be removed once seated in the auditorium. However, we are aware that some may people may not be able to wear face masks for reasons that are not immediately visible. We still encourage everyone to follow social distancing whilst moving around the building and all of our hand sanitisers, perspex screens, increased ventilation and enhanced cleaning procedures have remained in place. Although we encourage online booking where possible there may be tickets available on the door (doors open 30 minutes before the screening time). For some films that have been on sale for a while the automatic social distancing still blocks off two seats either side of a booking. For new films that have recently gone on sale we have reduced the social distancing to one seat either side of a booking. Please do think about this when choosing your seats so that we can minimise the amount of unbookable seats. When available we are introducing Audio Described subtitled screenings for the Hard Of Hearing (AD/HOH) These will generally be on a Saturday evening.  We do have a small number of headsets for visually impaired members of our audience to loan during these screenings, please ask at the Box Office. SHOWING THIS WEEK   MANDABI (PG) Screening in association with We Are Parable 4th & 5th August  8:00pm   We are incredibly excited to bring this brand new 4K restoration of Mandabi (the first feature film made in an African language) to our screen. Prior to the screening we will be showing a short recording of a music & spoken word performance by Poetic Unity in collaboration with We Are Parable celebrating 'Mother's Tongue' Ousmane Sembène was once asked if his films were understood in Europe. Sembène's response? "Let's be clear. Europe is not my centre. Europe is the outskirts." With his startlingly funny but clear-eyed satire Mandabi, Sembène made a bid for the world to reorient itself towards Africa as the heart of cinema. The first feature ever made in an African language, Mandabi fulfilled Sembène's dream "to restore Africa's stories to Africans." This stunning new 4K restoration brings it to the rest of the world. Set in Dakar, Mandabi tells the story of Ibrahim (Makhouredia Gueye) and the transformative effect that a 25,000 franc money order from his nephew in Paris has on his fortunes. Word quickly travels about his new found wealth, while a thousand bureaucratic obstacles stand in the path between him and his money. Ibrahim, preening and scheming, laying bets he has no means to collect, is a superb character study. But Mandabi is also a sprightly but stiletto-sharp satire on post-independence African nations and the shadow cast by colonialism. Winner of the Grand Jury prize at the Venice Film Festival, Sembène's adaptation of his own novella set a new course for African cinema: radical, anti-colonial and proudly independent in its methods. The creator of 'Hamilton' and the director of CRAZY RICH ASIANS invite you to a cinematic event, where the streets are made of music and little dreams become big. Lights up on Washington Heights. The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community.  At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life. IN THE HEIGHTS fuses Lin-Manuel Miranda's kinetic music and lyrics with director Jon M. Chu's lively and authentic eye for storytelling to capture a world very much of its place, but universal in its experience. "Desperate to walk on sunshine? After proving his skills and earning their trust, he and the three Muskehounds must defend the King from the villainous Cardinal Richelieu's secret plot to seize power. Will the Cardinal win and take control, or will Dogtanian and his new friends foil the evil scheme before it's too late? One for all and all for one! Screening on 10th & 12th August 2:00pm 11th August 5:30pm Off The Rails (15) from Bill Kenwright Films comes a journey about rediscovery, friendship and forgiveness. Directed by BAFTA nominated Jules Williamson (TATTOO), this feel good romp is a whistle-stop tour across beautiful European locations, reliving memories and making some new ones along the way! The film's stellar cast includes Kelly Preston, Jenny Seagrove, Sally Philips and Ben Miller, with Franco Nero. A dying wish from their best friend Anna (Andrea Corr) compels Cassie (Kelly Preston), Kate (Jenny Seagrove), and Liz (Sally Phillips), to put old feuds aside and take her 17-year-old daughter on an interrailing journey across Europe that they did not quite finish during their studies. Now in their fifties, they are older but not necessarily wiser. We would like to thank Amy & Paul from Flatpack Film Festival for starting our Young Programmers off on their adventures into programming. Local Hero (PG) Opening Night Film Monday 23rd August. 7:30pm Our opening night film sees a welcome return to the big screen for this Classic British film. A Texan oil magnate has a plan: to buy the small Highland village of Ferness and turn it into an oil refinery. He sends 'Mac' MacIntyre (Peter Riegert), one of his young executives, to organise the transaction – mostly because his name sounds Scottish. But when Mac arrives, he finds himself slowly but surely taken in by the town's lifestyle, and begins to reconsider his role in its acquisition. Local Hero, Bill Forsyth's loving portrait of small-town Scottish life, plays knowingly and fondly with stereotypes and histories, creating a unique, gentle film that's something to treasure. "Life-affirming and often laugh-out-loud funny, this is feel-good movie-making par excellence." ***** Empire Magazine Run time 111 mins Programmed by Matthew Squire & Fern Lloyd BOOK TICKETS HERE   Shorts For The Wee Ones (Agee 3 +) Tuesday 24th & Wednesday 26th August. 12:00pm A super special treat for the little ones and great for a first time visit to the cinema! Discovery Film Festival's latest Shorts for Wee Ones package is another truly international smorgasbord of delights; with films hailing from Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Norway, Switzerland and Russia and a full range of stories and animation styles. There's an ice cream-loving sloth, a lynx emerging from the forest for some night-time fun in a deserted townscape and a cat who isn't too successful when it comes to playing draughts. Four Arctic hares are called out on an emergency rescue mission in the frozen North and a wee wolf discovers the power of imagination to keep him warm in the winter winds. Our old friend The Little Bird is back, this time making friends with some bees, whilst a  very musical spider has to come up with a new plan when their web is suddenly broken. Suitable for viewing by all the family, but especially children aged 3+. Most of the shorts are in English or dialogue-free, with one incorporating brief Russian dialogue and English subtitles. Run time: 42 mins Programmed by Matthew Squire BOOK TICKETS HERE   APPLES (12A) Tuesday 24th August  7:30pm Universally adored by our Young Film Programmers Apples makes a welcome return to our screen. If you missed this when we screened it a few months ago we urge you to come along! In Christos Nikou's inspired, ultimately moving comedy-drama, a man appears to succumb to a condition affecting the whole world. In an alternate reality not too distant from our present state, a strange virus has stricken the world; for some unknown reason, people are randomly afflicted with amnesia. And for the unlucky few who have no family and are found lacking any ID, they are forced to start life anew in a state-sponsored programme. It's what happens to Aris, who awakens on a bus with no idea who he is or where he lives. Given new accommodation, he is charged with a series of tasks that allowed him to build up a new set of memories, with doctors checking in on his progress. Cate Blanchett was impressed with the film at last year's Venice Film Festival and jumped on board as Executive Producer in order to promote it. Fans of the Greek Weird Wave (led by Yorgos Lanthimos and Rachel Athina Tsangari) will recognise the film's deadpan humour. But Apples is utterly unique and signals the arrival of a major new talent in Nikou. ???? The hardest workers in nature get a starring role in this bright and bubbly animated adventure. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld provides the voice of Barry B Benson - a curious apis mellifera (that's Latin for honeybee, in case you were wondering) - who heads out into the world of humans and is outraged to find they're stealing the honey! What else is he to do but sue? Charming and funny, this will make you think twice about reaching for a rolled-up newspaper next time you see a bee. Run times: Wildlife Activity Session: 30 mins Film: 1 hour 31 mins Programmed by Fern Lloyd BOOK TICKETS HERE   The World to Come (15) Wednesday 25th August  7:30pm Set in 1850s America Vanessa Kirby and Katherine Waterston star as two 19th Century farmers wives trying to escape the drudgery and brutality of their lives, and their husbands. Ravishingly shot against the backdrop of the North–Eastern American landscape, Abigail (Waterston) and Tallie (Kirby) first find friendship, then solace and eventually romance in each other's company. "It is a film to remember for its passion - for its belief that those tiny snatches of pleasure are worth holding onto, even if the rest of the world might never believe them even possible." **** Empire Magazine "there's a satisfying literary intelligence at work. Co-writers Jim Shepard and Ron Hansen are both novelists, and The World to Come reflects that in its absorbing emotional layers and tender reverence for the written word. **** Wendy Ide – The Guardian Run time: 1 hour 38 mins Programmed by Mladen Pechevski BOOK TICKETS HERE   Spotlight On Maya Deren (15) Meshes Of The Afternoon & At Land Thursday 26th August  6:00pm  A VERY RARE CHANCE TO SEE THESE FILMS ON A BIG SCREEN Join us for an evening of cinematic exploration with Young Film Programmer, Elliot Auxant's, double bill showcasing female talent behind & in front of the camera. Elliot has chosen to shine a spotlight on Maya Deren, one of the most influential figures in American avant-garde cinema. Born in Kiev in 1917 Deren was only five years-old when, together with her parents, she arrived in the USA in 1922, having fled anti-Semitic pogroms in Ukraine. Following her studies in journalism and political science at Syracuse University and NYU in 1936, she went on to pursue a masters degree in English literature from Smith College. When her films began to appear in the 1940s, it was still incredibly rare for women to become filmmakers. Despite her short life (Deren died at the age of 44 in New York), she left behind a small but hugely important body of work, with several landmark avant-garde short films, two books and many writings in the Village Voice and other publications. - Georgia Korossi – BFI Meshes Of The Afternoon (1943) It was amid the turmoil of the Second World War that Deren collaborated with Czech cinematographer Alexander Hammid to make her surreal 14-minute debut, in which Deren herself appears as the enigmatic woman in the window. The two got married, and, while Hammid was working in Hollywood, he taught Deren the mechanics of filmmaking to help realise her vision. The result is a remarkable achievement that presents the nightmarish narrative of two lovers in a dreamlike and poetic psychodrama. Run time: 14 mins At Land (1944) Deren's thematic preoccupation with the human body, its movement and the process of filmmaking, begins to take shape in her second film, which draws some of its power from jump-cuts and the juxtaposition of spaces. Shot by the sea in Amagansett, Long Island, it features Deren herself again, as a woman washed up on the shore. She climbs up a dead tree, then is suddenly crawling on a dinner table, unnoticed by the party guests. Deren cuts from the seashore to the dinner party and back again to the seashore. At Land is an inimitable study of social rituals and the human body's place in nature. After a mischievous montage 'explaining' the film's origins, the narrative proper gets underway, charting the increasingly tense battle of wits between the chatty Alma (Andersson) and the mute Elisabet (Ullmann), who are isolated together in a cottage on the island of Fårö. With a rich, resonant mix of related themes - the vampiric nature of art, the complex fragility of personality, the difficulty of communication - the film is arguably Bergman's most audacious and formally innovative work, multi-levelled yet utterly lucid. Sven Nykvist's lustrous camerawork, the subtle sound design and matchless lead performances combine to create a mesmerisingly beautiful work of unforgettable, haunting mystery. Summer of Soul (...Or When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised)  In 1969, during the same summer as Woodstock, a different music festival took place 100 miles away. More than 300,000 people attended the summer concert series known as the Harlem Cultural Festival. It was filmed, but after that summer, the footage sat in a basement for 50 years. It has never been seen. Until now. Summer Of Soul is a stunning unearthed treasure destined to become a pillar of American music and African American history. In his striking debut as a filmmaker, the legendary musician Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson presents this transporting documentary—part concert film, part historical record—about an epic event that radiated the wholesale reevaluation of Black history, culture, fashion, and music. Baby Teeth (15)  When a seriously ill teenager falls for a small-time drug dealer, her parents disapprove. However, she soon finds a new lust for life from her blossoming romance.  A cliched sounding set up morphs into something truly special with fantastic performances from Eliza Scanlen (Little Women), Essie Davies and Ben Mendelsohn (Darkest Hour) and a script that never slips into sentimentality.  You'll laugh one minute, cry the next, and rave about it afterwards.
