Break for the Borderlands - Late Summer | | There are still some long lazy days of summer to enjoy so here are our five favourite things to do in and around Oswestry in Shropshire while the sun still shines! - Come to town for the Hot Air Balloon Carnival on August 20th and 21st.
- Take the train to the brewery or steam through beautiful borderlands
- Spoil yourself with a delicious afternoon tea in a borderland hotel or café
- Ignite your imagination at a living history event
- Bring the family, then lose them in a maize maze!
| | Hot Air Balloon Carnival 20th/21st August | | Voted one of the UK's top 50 free festivals, Oswestry's Hot Air Balloon Carnival has confirmed over 25 hot air balloons in an array of shapes and sizes for the two day carnival weekend! We are keeping fingers crossed for flying weather! Don't miss the park fly-outs, balloon demonstrations and the famous Saturday evening Night Glow. There will be an array of exciting local entertainment and live music, covering both carnival days - all in Cae Glas Park in the heart of town. | | We are lucky to have four heritage railways on our doorstep. In addition to a full summer timetable, Cambrian Heritage Railways, has joined the 'Love Your Railway' campaign with events telling the story of Britain's railways. Check out the beautiful Oswestry Station Ticket Office and some of the exhibits in the nearby museum. Don't miss the short ride down to Weston Wharf to Stonehouse Brewery and Weston Pools. On the 2nd to 4th Sept, Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway hold a gala weekend – an annual celebration of transport with lots of trains and displays. There's also a Diesel Weekend' at Llangollen Railways that will take visitors back to the halcyon era of diesel-hauled trains that ran between the 1960's and 1990's. Finally, the quirky Tanat Valley Light Railway is a great place to visit as part of the Nant Mawr Visitor Centre. | | An afternoon tea is a quintessential British treat, and with homemade baked treats, freshly cut sandwiches and much more, we know you will enjoy an afternoon tea in and around Oswestry. We are often asked for the best places to go for afternoon tea, so here are a few ideas to get you started. | | With four castles near to Oswestry, it won't be long before you stumble across a historic building. Being in Borderland territory, the area has seen the odd battle (or two!), so there are plenty of tales to be told. Explore the castles, enjoy a picnic in the stunning gardens and you may even catch a living history reenactment, some outdoor theatre or singalong cinema showings! Any trip to the area is not complete until you cross the iconic 'Stream In The Sky'. The first 11 miles of the Llangollen Canal is a World Heritage Site comprising embankments, tunnels, viaducts and aqueducts, including the stunning Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. | | There are a few more weeks left of the school holidays and we have some great places to visit that will keep the whole family smiling. Park Hall Countryside Experience has special event weeks throughout the summer and The British Ironwork Centre is also a great attraction with sculpture trails, restaurant & cafe, shopping, adventure play & various activities to keep everyone entertained.
