A powerful new film reveals the impact of war in Ukraine on women and children. The film 'Women' is directed and produced by Ukrainian filmmaker Lora Arkhypenko, supported by Shropshire Supports Refugees. It demonstrates the spirit and resilience of mothers forced to flee their homeland as bombs dropped on their cities, following the Russian invasion on February 24th, 2022. 'Women' follows three mothers settling into life in Shrewsbury, walking in the beautiful Shropshire countryside, enjoying street food, visiting Attingham Park and taking their children ice skating at a local rink. The men are notable by their absence - presumably away fighting, although this is not addressed in the film. Like a great many other Ukrainian women, they have been forced to flee without husbands, since Ukraine's martial law forbids men aged 18-60 who are deemed fit for combat from leaving the country. The women are keen to make the point that they have not come to the UK in search of a better standard of living. They did not choose to come here - it's about survival. The women speak of the kindness of the British people who have accepted them into their homes, but also the difficulties of overcoming language barriers and finding work. As professionals with high status jobs in Ukraine, they have had to swallow their pride and do whatever it takes to put food on the table. Filmmaker Lora Arkyhpenko says it was a film she had to make: "My life has changed along with the lives of many Ukrainians. I couldn't think about any other projects." She was assisted by staff at Newtown College and at Shropshire Supports Refugees, and Aaron Child of Shrewsbury's Highly Flammable Studio, along with editor friends in Ukraine. "I wanted to remind everyone that war is still going on. It isn't finished and we still need support," - Lora Arkyhpenko Ukrainian with English subtitles Run time: 60 mins + Q&A with director Lora Arkyhpenko & Tetyana Zahrebelna BOOK FREE TICKETS HERE | | | Look out for our March newsletter with full listings on our Borderlines Film Festival & other screenings in March coming very soon!
