Message from Oswestry Film Society
Fantastic news: Maona, Oswestry's new community cinema, is opening soon.... Yes, the news we've been waiting for. Maona is aiming to open its doors at the start of June. It'll be a soft opening. Most importantly, the plush seats remain from the old cinema. Other areas like the cafe-bar. the kitchen and so on will all be upgraded as time goes by. But the new proprietor, Tatenda Jamera, wants to get things started, so it'll be a work in progress. To begin with, he's aiming to show films Thursday to Sunday, with a mix of the latest box-office sellers, classics, and independent productions. The Oswestry Film Society, which has kept live cinema going in the town on Wednesday nights at the Hermon Chapel arts centre since the old Kinokulture closed, will continue to be involved in the film scheduling. OFS chairman James Bond said: "The loyal and enthusiastic audience that's supported us has shown there's definitely a desire for big-screen cinema in Oswestry and round about." Some of the industry's latest big films - like Mr Burton and the Oscar-winner Anora - are on the scheduling list for the opening period. We'll update you via the OFS, but keep an eye out for a new Maona website and social media pages coming soon. And please spread the word - do tell your friends about it all. | | | James added: "Thanks to the loyal support we've built up at the Oswestry Film Society we've been able to tell Tatenda we can help fund a new projector at the cinema. "We were delighted to have two sell-outs for our recent screenings of Conclave - but above all, over the past two and a half years we've shown some great films in a really sociable atmosphere that our audiences have told us they appreciate." "We believe our evenings have been more than just film shows: it's the whole experience of seeing something on a big screen, reacting to it with people around you, and enjoying a drink and a chat with a sort of adopted family!" That's just the sort of atmosphere we want to see flourish at Maona too, so do support Tatenda in his exciting new venture for Oswestry. | | And let's not forget the Hermon... We're really sorry that Jason and Karen are pulling out of the Hermon at the end of July due to their work commitments elsewhere, but the OFS would like to say a big THANK YOU for making us feel so welcome and for being such perfect hosts. Wednesday night films continue at the Hermon pre-Maona, including: Wed Apr 16: RISEN (15): has Jesus risen from the dead? A hard-bitten Roman soldier can't believe it -- or can he? Wed Apr 23: SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE (12A): a man questions an Irish town's complicity after disturbing secrets emerge from a local convent. Wed Apr 30: CHUCK CHUCK BABY (15): the return of a school crush upends the life of a Welsh factory worker. Wed May 7: A COMPLETE UNKNOWN (15): the meteoric rise of 19 year old Bob Dylan to worldwide music sensation. | | | |
