Planning application

Message from Elaine McKay.

Planning permission has been sought for a 20 dog kennel facility, which will in fact hold 28 dogs, at Platt Mill Farm. I would just like residents to be made aware that the closing date for objecting to the application is the 2nd January. As the planning department closed for Christmas yesterday evening, all objections need to be emailed to the department before the 1st of January. As I am sure you can imagine, the residents of Peverey Close and the Quillets (Bridge Field estate) are appalled that such a business should be allowed to have planning permission as the noise level to the residents would be unacceptable. Although the Dow sisters have said that the kennels are being made with sound proof material, this has NOT been proven. Dairi Pac start work at 5.30 in the morning and we hear the lorries coming in and out, this noise will disrupt dogs being kennelled AND THEY WILL BARK. I find the whole venture unexceptable in such a beautiful quiet place so near to other people. The council have, with the residents, just started the get the field into a pleasant place for people to walk and picnic that will all go to waste as the dog run goes along the river side towards the bridge. Please would you inform residents in the area to please lodge their complaints before the 2nd of January. Elaine MCkay Bridge Field Estate

The Rosie Project - Graham Simsion

Thursday 6th February 2014, 7.00pm (for 7.30pm start) at Booka

Join us on Thursday February 6th as the The Rosie Project (Lobster Love) book tour stops off in Oswestry. Author Graham Simsion will be with us to talk about his marvellous debut novel The Rosie Project.

This first novel about a man with undiagnosed Asperger’s syndrome became the unlikely publishing phenomenon of 2013, with rights sold in more than 40 countries around the world. It’s been described as a cross between Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, about a teenager with Asperger’s, and David Nicholls’s One Day, a bittersweet love story – both huge bestsellers.  It hit the top spot in Simsion’s native Australia, topped in the US  and in the UK stormed the Sunday Times Bestseller’s chart, winning glowing reviews and author endorsements across the board. It is published in paperback on January 2nd 2014.

Love isn’t an exact science – but no-one told Don Tillman. A thirty-nine year old geneticist, Don has never had a second date. So he devises the wife project, a scientific test to find the perfect partner. Enter Rosie – ‘the world’s most incompatible woman’ – throwing Don’s safe ordered life into chaos. But what is this unsettling, alien emotion he’s feeling?

We love this quirky, funny and endearing love story and feel sure you’ll be rooting for Don and Rosie every step of the way.

Planning application

Message from Graham Cross.

Re: Planning Application:

13/04881/FUL | Conversion of existing outbuilding (previous office premises) to create live/work unit together with erection of building to house 20no. boarding kennels | Platt Mill Farm Platt Bridge Ruyton Xi Towns Shrewsbury SY4 1LS

To the best of our knowledge, people in the immediate locality know of this application, but we thought it important to broaden awareness, due to noise pollution, increased traffic etc.

We would ask that local people take the time to view the application at:

http://planningpa.shropshire.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=neighbourComments&keyVal=MX8VRLTDFKH00  Or just google Shropshire Planning Portal.

Local residents in both Parishes have already used the portal to object, as they are very worried about the impact it will have.

Volunteers nominated for Natural England award

Message from Luke Neal.

Dear All,

The Fenn’s National Nature Reserve volunteers work very hard in all weathers and have made a significant impact in the restoration of the moss.

They have been nominated for a Natural England Grafta Award in the team category and have made the shortlist:

 They now need your vote!

Team volunteer

Volunteers at Fenn’s, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve

In a nutshell: The volunteer team at the Mosses is an integral part of the operation of the NNR and completely complements the Natural England staff team.

Fenn’s, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve is a lowland raised bog on the English/Welsh border. Historically the bog has suffered extensive damage by extraction and drainage and the practical restoration work includes raising water levels and removing trees. This allows the rare bog life to thrive.

The volunteers on the reserve bring commitment, integrity, skill and enthusiasm to the tasks in hand. The team ranges from recent graduates looking for practical experience, work experience students, youth groups and also longer term work placements from colleges and universities through to recently retired people. There are about 100 people in all and they provide the bulk of the monitoring activity that informs the development and restoration of the site.

As well as this monitoring work, many undertake practical aspects of site restoration, maintenance and access tasks. Just as importantly, the volunteer team act as ambassadors for the reserve and what is being achieved there, with visitors, visiting groups and especially in the wider community – this particularly impressed the judging panel.

Peter Bowyer

Reserve Manager
