Cheese & Wine at the Talbot

There are still some tickets available for Monday night's Wine Tasting at the Talbot.

We are promised an excellent selection of wines, and Tom is offering a super cheese buffet to go with them. Not only can you taste lots of different wines, but you can also place orders on the night at advantageous prices.

And don't forget that a portion of the takings is being donated to the Village Hall Committee as a very generous contribution to our redecoration plans. So if you want your Halls improved, the Talbot is the place to be on Monday night.

Can I get Infinity? The Answer.

Since my email yesterday about my Infinity Installation, I have received several emails all asking whether Infinity is available at a particular house.
Yoland's email distribution list seems to go far and wide - including some outside the area served by the Baschurch Exchange. And Infinity will not reach all subscribers of the Exchange anyway - some homes are just too far away from the Ruyton Cabinet or the Exchange itself - BT/Openreach plan to improve Broadband Infrastructure for around 95% of subscribers, but that still leaves around 100 homes with no improvement - and sadly, these are the homes with the worst Broadband BEFORE Infinity - for the same reasons. I suspect wireless is the only solution for these outlying properties.

You can check which exchange you are served from here:-
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search
Enter your phone number and it finds your exchange. If it says "Baschurch WNBAS" then you are on the right exchange for Infinity (we get Infinity 2, by the way - the latest version). If the website accepted your vote a year ago then I would be hopeful. It is not just the area code that is important - 01939 covers several exchanges, but if you start with 260, 261 or 262 you will probably be on Baschurch. But if SamKnows says anything else, then I am afraid you will have to wait to see what the Shropshire Council solution is - their website is here:- http://bit.ly/J3KfAe (everyone should visit this site and vote anyway - we need the whole of Shropshire to have Broadband)
But it will be some time off - they are still at the "assessing interest" stage - but they have been awarded a grant to help.

If you live in Ruyton Parish and are on WNBAS Exchange you are very likely to be served by the Cabinet near the Victoria Room. For the vast majority of homes served by this Cabinet you are already able to order superfast Broadband through your ISP, assuming your ISP offers a faster service. If the BT web site ( http://bit.ly/yoDWVS ) says Infinity is available when you enter your phone number, but your ISP does not offer SuperFast Broadband, then this is for commercial reasons rather than technical reasons. Your only option is to change ISP - either to BT or one of the others that is prepared to offer a faster service (there is a PlusNet subscriber already connected in the Village). But, sadly, there are homes in Ruyton Parish that are just too far from the Cabinet - mostly to the North and West of the Parish - Wykey, Eardiston, Shotatton etc. Even though fibre reaches the cabinet, the copper from the cabinet to your house is just too long. There is not a "wired" solution to this at the moment - but several people are looking at wireless solutions.

If you find you are on WNBAS but live in Baschurch and surrounding area (the East of the WNBAS area) then the BT web site  ( http://bit.ly/yoDWVS ) will probably say "coming soon". This means you will probably be getting Fibre to the Premises (a direct fibre all the way to your house) This is potentially even faster than the "Fibre to the Cabinet" solution, but takes longer to install. The current estimate I have from BT is around end July - but this is a HUGE task.

Hope this helps, and lets hope you find you are WNBAS!
I'm happy to answer any other questions if I can, or pass them on to BT if I can't. Or visit the Broadplace on a Friday and I can look up your phone number for you.

INFINITY up to the minute UPDATE!

Openreach have just connected my Infinity.
Absolutely magnificent!
I have gone from 3mbps to 36! And look at the Upload Speed!!
Here's the speed test result from http://www.speedtest.net - my connection has gone from Grade F to Grade A - faster than 94% of Great Britain!!!!! (It was "slower than 82% of GB" yesterday)

Many thanks to Richard and Paul and their Manager Brian, and of course, the rest of the BT & Openreach Team.

So we are now officially the Fastest Village in Shropshire - probably even in Britain.

But what a wet day for the team - here's Richard and Paul connecting my wires in the Cabinet :-

Licences forJubilee street parties

In case you having a knees up in your street?
Colin Case has found this useful information about music and bars.

PPL & PRS LICENCES FOR QUEEN'S DIAMOND JUBILEE STREET PARTIES

Added 23/4/12. This information updates s.47.6.2 in The Russell-Cooke Voluntary Sector Legal Handbook (VSLH3).
The Performing Right Society (PRS for Music) announced on 15 March 2012 that it would not charge a licence fee for music played at certain small community events, such as street parties, celebrating the Queen’s diamond jubilee. To be eligible for this exemption, all the of the following criteria must be met: the event must be in celebration of the jubilee, take place between 2-5 June 2012 inclusive, be organised and run by unpaid volunteers, be provided for the local community, and have a total capacity or expected audience of 300 or fewer. The event must not generate a profit, and must be held in premises or a place that does not otherwise require or currently hold a PRS for Music licence.

This year the Big Lunch is on 3 June and has been announced by Buckingham Palace as part of the main programme of events over the jubilee weekend, so will presumably be eligible for the waiver if it meets the other criteria. However, the PRS website says nothing about other street parties and similar activities to mark other events.

Further information about this discretionary waiver of the fee for jubilee events, and about possible discounts for other jubilee events that are provided for charity or the community but do not qualify for the waiver, is available from PRS for Music via tinyurl.com/8ynqjve.

The Phonographic Performance Licence (PPL) website does not say anything about any similar waiver, so a PPL licence might be required even if PRS is not. For more about these licences, see PPL-PRS licences for performing copyright music.

Calling all Artists

ARTISTS INVITED TO DISPLAY WORK AT

SHREWSBURY’S QUARRY

Local artists are invited to take part in a series of outdoor exhibitions at Shrewsbury’s Quarry.

The exhibition scheme, run by Shrewsbury Town Council, will run each Sunday from May 13 to September 2, from 2.30pm until 5.30pm, excluding July 8 (Quarry Concert weekend) and August 12 (Shrewsbury Flower Show).

Demonstrations and paintings can be displayed around the perimeter of the Dingle, which is a popular tourist attraction during the summer and is an ideal backdrop for displays.

Sale of artwork is also permitted.

Artists can display their work free of charge and can simply turn up on the day, however spaces cannot be guaranteed and will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

Cars are not permitted on site so artists should make alternative arrangements for getting items into the Quarry. Special permits may be granted, depending on circumstances, and can be requested from the Town Council.

Invitation to join the massed choir for the Oslympics

Following the competition that we ran last year, a local composer, Julian Cattley, has written a choral Anthem especially for the Oswestry Games.  He is now inviting local singers to join a Mass Choir to perform the anthem at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Oswestry Games.

Susie Hancock,Secretary, Oswestry & District Sports Council
OSWESTRY OLYMPIC GAMES - INVITATION TO JOIN THE MASS CHOIR
I would like to invite anyone with some experience of singing to join in our local Olympic celebrations by performing a brand new anthem as part of a mass choir. The work ‘Oswestry’ has been specially composed for the event and the aim is to encourage as many singers to get involved as possible.

The piece is written for a full four part choir and will be accompanied by Porthywaen Silver Band.  All rehearsals will take place at Porthywaen band hall {just outside Oswestry}.

Rehearsals will be directed by Janet Brown a music teacher and director of the choir at Morton church and Julian Cattley director of music at Oswestry School and composer of the anthem.

Joining the choir
We are looking for singers: Sopranos, Altos, Tenors and Basses and would welcome individuals as much as whole ensembles should they wish to join us. We are endeavouring to contact as many local groups as possible but please pass this information on if you are reading this and feel someone else should know and I will happily discuss arrangements further with any interested parties.

Although we would like this activity to be available to all our community we must ask that any children {under 18} are accompanied by an adult as this is a public event. If there are groups {e.g. a school choir} that wish to attend then please get in touch but again we would expect your own organisation to arrange appropriate supervision. We also need to ensure a reasonable balance is kept between parts so once rehearsals have started we reserve the right to refuse new members if we cannot accommodate any further singers in any particular section of voices.

Scores will be provided and electronic copies can also be sent out by e-mail on request.

I very much look forward to seeing as many singers as possible as we celebrate this inspirational sporting and cultural event bringing our community together.

Kindest regards
Julian Cattley -jcatmusic@virginmedia.com
