It’s your photograph – make it express what excited you about the subject.

Ruyton Village Hall Centenary Showcase

Message from Colin Case.

The Village Hall Committee are organising a "Showcase" evening on 14th June (a Saturday) at 7:00pm
The idea is to celebrate 100 years of the Village Hall Building by showing off the various facilities, and the clubs and organisations that use them.
A sort of "Variety Show" of the various activities that take place in any of our Halls.
The plan, of course, is to encourage new members of existing Clubs and Organisations or maybe attract new Groups.
The Hall has been improved substantially over the last few years - everything from New Windows to re-decoration and even to cushions on the seats!
Several Organisations are already arranged to take part - including Rainbows, Scottish Country Dancing, RATS (our AmDram Team), our Women's Institute and the Extend Exercise Group.
Happy Feet are unable to come on the night, but we hope to show a video of a previous performance, using our super High Definition Projector to display it on our HUGE Projection Screen.
Refreshments will be available in the Interval.
So put the date in your Diary - more details to follow.

Film on local wildlife

Message from Tonia Davies, Welshpool.

Please find below information on a Shropshire professional photographer, Tim Mitchell, who is making a Wildlife Film in his spare time for distribution into primary schools in Shropshire, as a way of sharing his passion for the natural world.

Passion, Knowledge and Perseverance Keeps Film on Track.

A collaboration between a photographer and a wildlife artist is set to benefit many young people in Shropshire through an inspirational wildlife film. Tim Mitchell, a photographer based in Oswestry, Shropshire, started filming in 2013 driven by a passion to show off the wildlife on our doorstep and get children involved on a daily basis with the natural world.

“We've got such a fantastic array of wildlife in this area, much of it people are missing and I really want to show that wildlife is accessible to everyone and in particular to get children involved. As soon as you point out the wildlife on our doorstep, kids are instantly fascinated. The film is shot in a local nature reserve but highlights the wildlife around us in our own gardens and what we can do to protect it “ said Tim.

Tim Mitchell is using his photography and filming expertise to create the Wildlife Film in Shropshire and provide it free to schools in Oswestry initially. Through the film, Tim is aiming to encourage children to look around them and see the wildlife that is on their doorstep, to enjoy it and help protect it.  A need for a film presenter led Tim to contact Ben Waddams, the renowned wildlife artist. Ben was equally enthused with the project and both Tim and Ben are doing this work in their free time but are committed to providing a high quality, informative and  fun wildlife film that is accessible for all primary schools in Shropshire and beyond via social media.

Woodside Primary School in Oswestry are involved in this project and have already had a site visit to a nature reserve in north Shropshire. The reserve is a good example where land that was once waste land and quarried for sand and gravel has been created into a woodland nature reserve for all to enjoy. The film is expected to reach children of all ages right across Shropshire and be available for download via social media for anybody to access.

Tim's enthusiasm and passion for the Wildlife Film attracted initial local sponsorship from  OBR Graphics, Seddon Haulage and Tudor Griffiths Group (owners of the woodland nature reserve) as well as other local businesses, but funding has fallen short of what is required to complete the film to the professional and quality standard that Tim demands from it. He is looking for further sponsorship from businesses and organisations who would like to play their part in the community and reach national audiences.

“The idea of the film came to me many years ago, as far back as the early 1990s when I used a video camera for the very first time. Back then it was more difficult to edit video and maintain the quality but new technology has meant that it is possible to keep the quality through editing” said Tim Mitchell.
“Perseverance is the key! Whilst I had  initial funding from local sponsors, I was still left with a shortfall for the specialist equipment needed, then the stormy and wet weather at the end of 2013 prevented many filming days and not forgetting the stars of the show, the wildlife itself, well they didn't always play ball either! A real boost was getting Ben Waddams on board, he's such a respected artist and his enthusiasm to present the film is a real bonus” continued Tim.
“What we need now is sponsorship and any business or organisation who would like to be part of this fantastic project, please do get in contact. I'm very proud of this film and the possible benefits to children and wildlife are enormous.”

Rogation Sunday in Ruyton XI Towns

Message from Anne Smith, St. John the Baptist Church Ruyton XI Towns.

Because of a dismal weather forecast for Sunday, The Annual Rogation Service this Sunday 25th May will not be held on the Cliffe, but in Ruyton-XI-Towns church at 11am. This means that we can't do the traditional Beating of the Parish Boundary, but at least we will be dry, and we extend a warm invitation to everyone to come to give thanks for the beauty and productivity of the earth, and to ask for a blessing on the crops now growing - and to enjoy coffee and biscuits afterwards!

Free arts & crafts at Pride Hill Centre

Message from Alistair Syme, Shrewsbury Shopping Centres PR.

Taking flight in the Pride Hill Centre

Free arts and crafts sessions will be the perfect launch pad for budding high fliers as participants get a chance to join in kite-making sessions, paper aeroplane design and even build their own windmill.

People of all ages are encouraged to wing their way over to the lower level of the Pride Hill Centre for the workshops, held over two days during school half term week - on Wednesday and Thursday, May 28 and 29, from 11am-4pm. The fun sessions are aimed at all skill levels and will be led by professional artist Chris Wright.

“It doesn’t matter whether you are at primary school, a full time artist, a student or just like to play around with paper and paint, everyone will have a chance to produce something on the theme of flight,” said dad of two Chris.

Paints, brushes and all equipment needed to decorate a kite in a rainbow of colours will be provided, in readiness to send the finished flying machine skywards into the spring sunshine.

Those who prefer to keep their feet firmly on the ground can simply give their imaginations free rein by drawing a flight-related picture, such as a dragonfly or a damsel fly.

“Families can pop in while they are on a shopping trip and end up spending an hour or more with us, often using skills they never previously knew they had. Then they go home with an extra surprise in their shopping bags - in the shape of a completely original artwork they have created themselves!”

Quarry Park Art Exhibition

Message from Suzi Wilkinson, Shrewsbury Market PR.

A chance for local artists to display their work and hopefully make a sale or two.

Uri Geller`s GORILLA!

Message from Amanda Fitton at the British Ironworks Centre, Oswestry.

Many of you will have heard or read about the Gorilla made of spoons for Uri Geller.   Now you can experience what a wonderful day it was for the workforce and those invited to enjoy the unveiling by Prince Michael of Kent.

The sculpture will stand in Uri`s garden which is opened 4 times a year for terminally ill children, mostly from Israel and Palestine.

The British Ironworks Centre at Aston, on the A5 just outside Oswestry, is open as a tourist destination, a great place to take the children to run around the interesting exhibits in the field.   I understand they will be opening a cafe soon.

Please find herewith a link to the official footage of our Open Day on Saturday for your perusal – we wondered if any of your loyal readers would be interested to see this too!

Can you help?

Message from Bill & Maggie Barnes.

Two or three years ago we discovered an enterprising young couple, who salvaged and recycled electrical items. We recollect that they operated from the Hawarden area. They collected large or small items, including computers, TV’s, fridges, freezers, small household equipment and wiring etc. Unfortunately we have been unable to locate them. Is there anybody out there who knows of a similar service?

Maggie & Bill Barnes, 01691659708

Try www.revive.co.uk
They are based in Harlescott.  If you go to their website you will see that they take electrical goods and computers, do them up and test thembefore offering the goods for sale.

Revive is a charity which starts young people on the road to employment - from serving customers to doing the work of restoring electrical goods, computers and making `new` furnitcure out of old.

I know because we had a director staying here last year!

Many many thanks to all of you who answered the call from Helen Porter about her swarm of bees. The bees were soon collected by Fragile Planet of Oswestry, 01691 206 728 69. What a helpful, friendly, knowledgeable bunch you are - we could teach D.Cameron a thing or two about The Big Society! Take a leaf out of Helen`s book and ask the mailing list for help on any subject at all, I wouldn`t have thought of using the list if I found a swarm of bees in the garden! Plezse stick the attached poster to a door, gate, wall, fence or even a noticeboard near you.

Can you help?

Message from Susie Hancock, Treasurer, Ruyton Parish Council.
If you can help, please contact Susie direct.

Is there anyone on the mailing list who would be prepared to check the accounts of Ruyton Village Hall?

As Treasurer, I have prepared the annual accounts but I need someone to just confirm that the invoices and receipts match up to the transactions on the bank statements i.e. that the Village Hall money is being properly looked after.

The independent examiner does not have to be a qualified accountant or anything – but they do have to be outside the committee and so unbiased.  I would be most grateful if someone could volunteer an hour or two to check the annual accounts for me.

HIPPY DINNERS - ABBIE ROSS

Thursday 5th June 2014, 6.00pm (for 6.30pm start) at Booka

Join us on Thursday 5th June for an evening full of 70′s nostalgia as Abbie Ross talks about her new book, Hippy Dinners: A Memoir of a Rural Childhood. So funny and pitch perfect in every way – you’ll love it!

In 1972 Abbie Ross’s cosmopolitan parents move the family from London to rural North Wales, exchanging a town house in Islington for a remote farmhouse on a hill.

Abbie’s Liverpudlian grandparents – dedicated followers of Liberace, sleek in scented mohair and patent leather – are sure they’ve lost their minds. For Abbie, though, the only cloud on the horizon is the nearby hippy commune and its inhabitants. There are worrying signs that this is the sort of ‘better life’ that her parents have in mind.

Brilliantly evoking a particular time and place, Abbie’s memoir re-creates a world of dens and pineapple chunks, of John Craven’s Newsround and fishing for sticklebacks – and the joy but also the burning powerlessness of being a child. Disgusted by her father’s ‘yogic flying’ and her mother’s taste for brown bread and billowing cheesecloth (with no bra), Abbie is desperate not to be different. Far better, she thinks, to fit in with shouting, pathologically nosy Sara across the fields,or stay close to Philip next door – paralysingly shy and with a preference for orange food and no trousers (‘nice to have a bit of air’) …

Rich with detail that reveals a whole world, Hippy Dinners is very funny and full of heart. It is also a delicate and astute portrait of the brutal realities of ‘a simple life’.

Date: Thursday 5th June – 6.00pm (for a 6.30pm start)

Venue: Booka

HERBACEOUS - PAUL EVANS

Thursday 19th June 2014, 7.00pm (for 7.30pm start) at Booka

Join us on Thursday 19th June as Guardian columnist and BBC broadcaster, Paul Evans, talks about his new book, Herbaceous.

Herbaceous is a series of prose poems which combines botany with autobiography to look anew at our relationship with plants. Published by Little Toller and illustrated by Kurt Jackson, it is the first in a new series of books celebrating the very best in contemporary nature writing.

Climate change is eroding the familiar pattern of the seasons, so we turn instinctively to the life cycle of herbaceous plants to guide us through the year. The growing, flowering, seeding and dying back to earth of wild flowers, weeds, herbs and and garden perennials sustain and enrich our everyday lives with food, metaphor, joy, anxiety, medicine, stories, beauty and enchantment. Above all, by enabling us to read the changing seasons, plants help us navigate our way in the world.

Herbaceous is a journey which follows the colour pulse of plants throughout the year, searching for new rhythms in a changing world. It begins with yellow: the pulse of early insects and the symbol of the returning sun. It is followed by spring’s vernal whites and the hedonist, spirited pinks of summer. Gradually, the strange and melancholy blues of early autumn are replaced by the ripple of seed-setting and a return to the browns of our subterranean winter dreams.

You can see a clip of Paul talking about Herbaceous here

Date: Thursday 19th June - 7.00pm (for 7.30pm start)
