Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling are a chalk and cheese duo in this fast-talking comedy-thriller.

Holland March (Ryan Gosling) is a down-on-his-luck private eye barely scraping a living in 1970s Los Angeles. Jackson Healey (Russell Crowe) is a tough guy enforcer who thinks with his fists. When these two polar opposites are unexpectedly thrown together in the search for a missing girl, a darkly hilarious and fast-moving mystery unfolds as they plunge ever further into the city's seedy, neon-inflected underbelly.

Lethal Weapon writer Shane Black returns to the territory of his critically acclaimed directorial debut Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with this snappy and irreverent buddy comedy, one that brings the 1970s roaring back to life in all its flare-trousered glory. Gladiator's Russell Crowe and Drive's Ryan Gosling make for unexpectedly hilarious partners in crime whilst the supporting cast includes Oscar winner Kim Basinger.

"A defiantly old-school action comedy that delivers big where it really counts." **** Little White Lies

"Quick on its wits and fast with its fists, this is Black firmly back doing what he does best. And nobody out there does it better." **** Empire Magazine

When granddaughter Sage turns up at Elle's door in desperate need of money, it sets in motion a day of encounters and misadventures that digs up past secrets and opens old wounds as the impoverished pair attempt to raise the needed cash. Lily Tomlin gives a winning, charismatic performance in the title role, in a film that is in equal parts heart-breaking and hilarious.

Alice returns to Wonderland in this eye-popping follow-up to Tim Burton's fantasy blockbuster.

Several years after her first adventures in the utterly madcap and enchanting world of Wonderland, Alice Kingsleigh (Mia Wasikowska) finds herself sucked back into the magical land where the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) is dying. In order to save her eccentric friend, Alice must delve ever further into this topsy-turvy universe to seek out the very living embodiment of Time himself (Sacha Baron Cohen). In 2010, Tim Burton's adaptation of Lewis Carroll's beloved children's classic became one of the biggest blockbusters of all time. Now, Muppets director James Bobin steps in with Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp leading the all-star cast, including a returning Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and the late Alan Rickman in his final role as caterpillar Absolem. Meanwhile, Ali G and Borat creator Sacha Baron Cohen brings the quirky menace as the villainous Time.

Eddy and Patsy finally make their riotous big-screen debut – older but none the wiser!

Created by Jennifer Saunders, British sitcom Absolutely Fabulous swiftly ascended the ranks of all-time-great comedy shows. The show introduced us to hilariously self-obsessed PR agent Edina 'Eddy' Monsoon (Saunders) and her even more grotesque magazine editor friend Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley) in their never-ending quest to stay young and relevant. Now, the unforgettable twosome finally make their big screen debut in the long-awaited Ab Fab movie, which picks up with Eddy and Patsy still attempting to claw back their youth. When a bizarre accident results in the death of supermodel Kate Moss however, the two must flee to the French Riviera!

Several old favourites from the show return including Eddie's long-suffering daughter Saffy (Julia Sawalha), sarcastic Mother (June Whitfield) and the brilliantly air-headed Bubble (Jane Horrocks). Making cameos are the likes of Jon Hamm, Rebel Wilson and Gwendoline Christie.

The second in our new mini season 'In Focus' exploring experimental, documentary and artists cinema.

Celebrated cinephile Mark Cousins (The Story of Film: An Odyssey, A Story of Children and Film) writes and directs this dreamlike evocation of Belfast, beautifully shot by Christopher Doyle (In the Mood for Love, 2046).

Go on an emotional journey through the rich, complex and often tragic history of the Northern Irish capital — accompanied by a powerful soundtrack by DJ and film composer David Holmes ('71, Oceans Eleven) — and explore the poetic beauty of this controversial but inspiring city.

"The city as a symphony of long-forgotten memories, Mark Cousins' I Am Belfast is a refreshingly hopeful depiction of a place habitually represented in cinema as a battleground of sectarian violence." **** Cine- Vue

The makers of Despicable Me present a delightful new adventure focusing on our beloved animal companions.

Max (voiced by Louis C.K.) is a pampered terrier living the high life with his owner Katie in a swish Manhattan apartment. When their owners are away, Max and his fellow animals love to engage in non-pet behaviour including raiding the fridge for decidedly tastier food. However, his routine is turned upside down when Katie brings back a slobbering mutt named Duke (Eric Stonestreet) from the pound to come and live with them. Nevertheless, these two squabbling pooches must learn to get on when they end up lost in New York. It's time for an animal posse, led by Pomeranian Gidget (Jenny Slate) to find their friends and save the day.

The creators of the Despicable Me movies and Minions show us what our pets get up to behind closed doors in this funny and endearing animated adventure.

Hailed as a masterpiece at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, Tale of Tales is a sumptuous, seductive and macabre re-telling of Giambattista Basile's classic Italian fairy tales by renowned director Matteo Garrone (Gomorrah, Reality).

Comprising three wildly fantastical stories, including a queen who gives birth after eating a sea monster's heart, an old peasant woman who finds youth after falling asleep in an enchanted forest and a proud king who raises a flea as his child, these are tales that your parents never dared tell you. Set in an epic landscape filled with a host of bizarre characters (played by a stunning ensemble cast of Salma Hayek, John C. Reilly, Vincent Cassel, Toby Jones and Stacy Martin), this outlandish, grotesque and beguiling fantasy world is like nothing you've seen before.

Gloriously shot, with a spine-tingling soundtrack by Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Rust & Bone), Tale of Tales is a lavish production from the makers of High-Rise and Sexy Beast. Deliciously dark, wickedly funny and outrageously entertaining, these adult-only fairy tales are a breathtaking work of cinematic escapism.

Our second Mini Season of World Cinema continues with Arabian Nights Volume 2 - The Desolate One.

No familiarity with the original Arabian Nights tales – or with Volume 1 of director Gomes's (Tabu) trilogy – is required to appreciate the darkly comic stories that comprise The Desolate One.
Crista Alfaiate again narrates as Scheherazade, but the vignettes here are even more absurdist than in Volume 1. We visit a courtroom where the judiciary and the people it represents are clearly at odds, and a case involving the theft of 13 cows unravels to include a similar number of mail-order brides.

This furious comment on Portugal's legal system precedes an equally acerbic allegory about the decline of social cohesion as seen through the eyes of an unloved poodle seeking shelter on a rundown housing estate. Unremittingly enraged, and brilliantly entertaining.

"The cinematic language in which Gomes is working is immersive rather than strictly narrative. And as such, the occasional lapse of concentration hardly matters." **** The Observer

The debut narrative feature from Israeli video artist Omer Fast, Remainder is a stylish thriller adapted from English novelist Tom McCarthy's cult bestseller.

It's set in London, where an accident causes an unnamed young man (Tom Sturridge), to lose his memory and sense of self.

In recovery after this traumatic incident, he's visited by sensations of extreme déjà vu and after he's given a large financial settlement, starts trying to reconstruct his past via these few precious fragments of memory. But neither he nor his friends can predict how far he will go in realising his quest.

Cleverly crafted to mirror its protagonist's mental state, Fast's often surreal, darkly humorous thriller offers a narrative that is obscure, complex and almost certainly not what it seems.

"Omer Fast provides a visually stunning piece of British, film long awaited from a master of video art." *****  The Up-Coming

Re scheduled and now with both director Paul Fegan & musician Aidan Moffatt in attendance we are pleased to present this as part of In Focus Mini Season.

Paul Fegan's first feature documentary follows Scottish cult-pop raconteur and former Arab Strap frontman Aidan Moffat as he tours Scotland in 2014, performing his modern re-interpretations of old folk songs.

It was meant to be a tour that celebrated communities and lore. But just before they hit the road, Moffat met Sheila Stewart: a 79-year-old force of nature, the last in a line of travelling folk royalty, and a balladeer whose life – and unexpected death, in 2014 – upturned Moffat's folk assumptions, and diverted the course of Fegan's film.

The ensuing film is a warm-hearted journey through music, mortality, landscape and time. It's also a moving, wry and enlightening depiction of two of Scotland's most distinct and vital voices, as they cross paths (and words): Moffat believes Scotland's oldest songs are ripe for re-working against a contemporary urban backdrop. Stewart does not.

"Director Fegan has an eye for evocative shots of Scottish landscapes. He also shares Moffat's sense of mischief and his eye for a comic image." **** The Independent

One of world's most visionary, celebrated and influential filmmakers, Andrei Tarkovsky made just seven features before his tragically early death at the age of 54. Characterised by metaphysical and spiritual explorations of the human condition, each film is an artistic masterpiece of extraordinary visual beauty and stand as enduring classics of world cinema.

Screening from pristine new digital prints, the Russian auteur's seven features will be showing at selected cinemas across the UK and Ireland.

Mirror

Mirror is the celebrated Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky's most autobiographical work in which he reflects upon his own childhood and the destiny of the Russian people. The film's many layers intertwine real life and family relationships – Tarkovsky's father, the poet Arseny Tarkovsky, reads his own poems on the soundtrack and Tarkovsky's mother appears as herself – with memories of childhood, dreams and nightmares. From the opening sequence of a boy being cured of a stammer by hypnotism, to a scene in a printing works which encapsulates the Stalinist era, Mirror has an extraordinary resonance and repays countless viewings.

"Mirror deserves a big-screen viewing, with its smorgasbord of memories in dream, drama and newsreel form from the life of a dying poet." **** The Times

Legendary director Stanley Kubrick's tenth feature film is one of Kubrick's finest and most influential films and has been named as one of the greatest films ever made in polls including Sight & Sound and Time. Now with a full digital restoration the BFI brings this magnificent film back to the big screen.

In this adaption of William Makepeace Thackeray's novel about the exploits of an 18th century Irish adventurer, Ryan O'Neal stars as Redmond Barry (later Barry Lyndon) and Marisa Berenson is Lady Lyndon. Among the great supporting cast are Patrick McGee, Hardy Krüger, Diana Koerner, Leon Vitali, Steven Berkoff, Murray Melvin and Leonard Rossiter.

Only a cinema screen can do justice to the stunning visuals of Barry Lyndon. Kubrick went to incredible lengths in his research of the period in order to re-create it accurately. Inspired by painters such as Thomas Gainsborough and William Hogarth, the film has a beautiful, painterly look, enhanced by filming in natural or historically accurate light sources. Some scenes were lit only by candlelight, captured by the super-fast lenses of Oscar®-winning cinematographer John Alcott.

Our first Mini Season of Afternoon Classics is a trio of musicals from the Golden Age Of Hollywood fully restored by the BFI.

The final screening in this first season is the all time favourite Singin' In The Rain, probably the most treasured musical in the history of cinema.

It is essentially a satire on the dawning age of talking pictures, but that description doesn't begin to describe its importance in the hearts of film lovers. Given its origins – producer Arthur Freed wanted a framework on which to hang a selection of the hits he'd written in the early part of his career with Nacio Herb Brown – it should have been an uncomfortable melange of a picture. But somehow, with its combination of endearing performances, a razor-sharp script by Adolph Green and Betty Comden, inspired direction from Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen and a dazzling array of show-stopping song and dance sequences, Singin' in the Rain remains a triumphant and exhilarating cinema experience.

1927 Hollywood. Monumental Pictures' biggest stars, glamorous on-screen couple Lina Lamont and Don Lockwood, are also an off-screen couple if the trade papers and gossip columns are to be believed. Both perpetuate the public perception if only to please their adoring fans and bring people into the movie theaters. In reality, Don barely tolerates her, while Lina, despite thinking Don beneath her, simplemindedly believes what she sees on screen in order to bolster her own stardom and sense of self-importance. R.F. Simpson, Monumental's head, dismisses what he thinks is a flash in the pan: talking pictures. It isn't until The Jazz Singer(1927) becomes a bona fide hit which results in all the movie theaters installing sound equipment that R.F. knows Monumental, most specifically in the form of Don and Lina, have to jump on the talking picture bandwagon, despite no one at the studio knowing anything about the technology. Musician Cosmo Brown, Don's best friend, gets hired as Monumental's ideas man and musical director. And by this time, Don has secretly started dating Kathy Selden, a chorus girl who is trying to make it big in pictures herself. Don and Kathy's relationship is despite their less than friendly initial meeting. Cosmo and Kathy help Don, who had worked his way up through the movie ranks to stardom, try make the leap to talking picture stardom, with Kathy following along the way. However, they have to overcome the technological issues. But the bigger problem is Lina, who will do anything to ensure she also makes the successful leap into talking pictures, despite her own inabilities and at anyone and everyone else's expense if they get in her way, especially Kathy as Don's off screen girlfriend and possibly his new talking picture leading lady.

" Is this really the greatest Hollywood musical ever made? In a word, yes." ***** Rogerebert.com

In the 1950s, Chet Baker (Ethan Hawke) was one of the most famous trumpeters in the world, renowned as both a pioneer of the West Coast jazz scene and an icon of cool. By the 1960s, he was all but washed up, his career and personal life in shambles due to years of addiction.

Creatively blending fact with fiction and driven by Hawke's virtuoso performance, Born to Be Blue unfolds at a key moment in the 1960s, just as Baker attempts to stage a hard-fought comeback, spurred in part by a passionate romance with a new flame (Carmen Ejogo).

"Ethan Hawke delivers a riff on soulful, haunted jazz legend Chet Baker in "Born to Be Blue." It's one of the actor's finest outings, particularly of a piece with his recent tendency to test his boundaries and dabble in new areas. Gleaning what he could from documentaries like "Let's Get Lost" and recollections of the enigmatic performer from friends and biographers, Hawke ultimately made the character his own." A unique one night only cinema event on Thursday 8 September directed by Andrew Dominik (Chopper, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Killing Them Softly), One More Time With Feeling will be the first ever opportunity anyone will have to hear Skeleton Tree, the sixteenth studio album from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. The film will screen in cinemas across the world on 8th September 2016, immediately prior to the release of Skeleton Tree the following day.

Originally a performance based concept, One More Time With Feeling evolved into something much more significant as Dominik delved into the tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album. Interwoven throughout the Bad Seeds' filmed performance of the new album are interviews and footage shot by Dominik, accompanied by Cave's narration and improvised rumination.

Filmed in black-and-white and colour, in both 3D and 2D, the result is fragile, raw and a true testament to an artist trying to find his way through the darkness.

Run time: 110 mins

This screening is in 2D
