Dear Blogger,

Message forwarded by Ingrid Knowles, Oswestry.net

Oswestry Film Society October films.

As we head into October.....

Good-feel films on OFS Tuesdays

This coming Tuesday, Michael Palin, Maggie Smith and a host of well-known faces - plus a pig! - star in the British comedy A Private Function.
Forthcoming presentations see a 50th anniversary showing of the classic drama The Day Of The Jackal - which'll look brilliant on the big screen, then the much-requested family caper Hugo.
Also in the planning, a film plus Q&A with a well-known TV personality - keep an eye on the OFS website, and we'll let you know more as soon as we can.
And in our on-going collaboration with other Oswestry art venues, check out the Attfield Theatre for their week-long run of the play version of the TV favourite 'Allo 'Allo from this Monday, Oct 2

Oswestry Repair Cafe now easily accessable

Dear Blogger,

Message forwarded by Ingrid Knowles, Oswestry.net

This new venue for Oswestry Repair Cafe is so much more convenient for those of us who live out of town, and also the Shrewsbury Repair Cafe.  Lets hope people will be able to make use of this valuable service to repair not throw away.

Hello Everyone,

Oswestry & Borders Repair Cafe will be in a NEW VENUE next month  -

  Oswestry Memorial Hall
Saturday October 14th 12 - 3pm.

Please help us by booking your item in beforehand, so we know which fixperts to invite and what tools they need to bring.
Please note items booked in by October 8th will be given priority.

In an effort to encourage more recycling, we have Elizabeth from Terracycle Telford coming to our January 13th Repair Cafe in the Memorial Hall. She can accept sorted recycling from this list https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jc-EMAdXq8kxDB5XHqFE4efVViewIQSH/view?usp=sharing so if you have any of these items lying around at home, or want to start collecting them, you can bring them in next year.

Best wishes
Elaine

Buried (15)
Oswestry Film Society Screening

Tuesday 19th September 7:30pm
?

With all his Wrexham attention up the road, it's about time here at the Oswestry Film Society we put on a Ryan Reynolds film - and in Buried he shows what a serious and intense actor he can be.

Reynolds stars as Paul Conroy, a non-military contract lorry driver in Iraq, circa 2006. He wakes up in total darkness, shocked to discover that he's in a coffin, apparently buried alive somewhere in the Iraqi desert. He has a cigarette lighter, a flask, and a mobile phone - and 90 minutes of air but no way out. He begins calling anyone he can think of for help, all the while fighting an endless array of troubles - mainly the ever-diminishing air supply inside the coffin, but also a snake attack, a cave-in, and the horrible, horrible panic that won't ever completely go away.

The idea of staying entirely inside the coffin for a whole film is a huge challenge, and the filmmakers have mounted it admirably. They keep the audience gripped from the opening scenes, reveal information a little at a time, provide an emotional ebb and flow, and ramp it up when the time is right.
This tense, claustrophobic thriller shows Reynolds is a class act - there's so much more to him than Deadpool!

Please note the film starts at 7:30pm there are no trailers at OFS screenings

The Best Of Sheffield Adventure Film Festival On Tour 2023 (15)

Wednesday 20th September  7:30pm

ShAFF is one of the UK's most established outdoor and adventure festivals. Each year the festival presents the pinnacle of films from climbing, running, water sports and biking. Since 2018, ShAFF and Tull Stories have presented the tour to audiences across the UK and we're thrilled to be back in cinemas in 2023.

THE BEST OF ShAFF 2023  – TOUR PROGRAMME

A selection of the most popular films from this year's ShAFF,  including the most exciting voices and athletes from the worlds of climbing, biking, running and the water.

BLUETITS
12 mins / WATER
Bluetits is the documentary short and directing debut from celebrated Cornish photographer Katie Burdon. The film follows founder Sian Richardson and early members of the beloved swimming group BlueTits, a now 6,000-strong organisation. A journey of self-discovery and pure joie de vivre, Bluetits is a heartwarming and honest celebration of older women and the community that brings them together.

CERRO ABAJO VALPARAISO
11 mins / CYCLING
Follow urban downhill riders from all over the world through the narrow streets of the Chilean town of Valparaíso. The skills of the riders will be tested on this urban track peppered with stairs, corners and concrete.

LAPPORTEN SKYLINE
18 mins / MOUNTAINS
During the summer of 2021, some of the best highliners in the world head for the iconic Lapporten Gap just outside Abisko in Northern Sweden. The plan is to put up a two-kilometre-long highline 600 metres above the deck and then walk across. If they succeed, it will be a new world record.

RIDING THE RAILS
10 mins / CYCLING
A mountain bike film about a rider and his wife who convert their bikes to ride on abandoned railways to access remote camping, fishing, biking and of course adventure.

THE NINE WHEELS
21 mins / CYCLING
The film tells the story of the Schneeberger family a.k.a The 9 Wheels. Mountain bike stars of the future, Emric (10) and Raoul (13) are home-schooled by their parents Toni and Laetitia. They live in their motorhome going from bike park to bike park across Europe, a decision prompted by the discovery of a neurodegenerative disease in Laetitia. This film explores what it is like to live with a disability, brotherly love, the devotion of parents and ultimately, what it is like to live life one day at a time. A family living life to the fullest. This film has emotion, soul, hope and high-power riding scenes!

RAW
3 mins / WATER
Filmed in the heart of the jungle of French Polynesia, and close to the most beautiful wave in the world, famous photographer and filmmaker Tim McKenna has followed the surfing locals Gilbert Teave and Tahurai Henry during one special day. More than a classic video of Tahiti's iconic wave, the short film RAW – The Sound of Teahupo'o is a pure aesthetic and sound travel.

NEW WAY UP
24 mins / MOUNTAINS
The Karakoram mountains are known for their huge scale and jaw-dropping beauty. Nestled within them is Gulmit Tower (5810m), a technical granite pinnacle that has never been summited. Previous teams have often failed because the highly glaciated terrain makes the approach by foot long and treacherous. Fabi Buhl and Will Sim, both experienced alpinists, have a new idea. They plan to harness the power of the sky and use paragliders to fly over the glaciated terrain, reaching the base of the climb in hours, not days. Follow them on their epic journey as they attempt to set a new direction for Himalayan climbing.

The Innocent - L'Innocent (15)

Thursday 21st September  7:30pm

Abel (Louis Garrel), a museum educator and widower is at his wits' end when his mother Sylvie marries Michel, a convict she met while teaching drama at the local prison. Caught up with his suspicions of his new stepfather, he remains blissfully unaware of his developing feelings for Clémence, a vivacious Noémie Merlant (PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE).

Fizzing with a cracking chemistry, and a banter à la française, THE INNOCENT is part family farce, part heist thriller but above all a heart-warming romantic entertainer.

We are thrilled to be supported by Film Hub Midlands through the BFI Film Audience Network with funds from The National Lottery. The aim of this support is to give everyone in the UK the opportunity to enjoy a diverse range of British & international independent films and without this support we would not be able to offer such a wide range of independent & world cinema.

From time to time the BFI ask us to survey a sample of our audience so that they can continue to improve their offer and support for independent cinemas and their audiences.

If you have visited kinokulture in June we hope you will spare a few minutes to take this short online survey and help us to continue bringing a diverse film programme to Oswestry audiences.
