Making Tracks performed by LADS

Tonight I went to see Making Tracks, the story of the Cambrian Railway,
performed by Llanymynech Amateur Dramatic Society.

Written Neil Rhodes, a member of LADS, and something like 105 parts
played by 70 or so adults and children with an excellent music group and
brilliant singing of songs, also written by LADS members.

I can recommend this production, do try and get to Llanymynech, either
the outdoor performance, or like tonight, in the village hall, both on
the Knockin road as you drive into the village.

Tomorrow`s performance starts at 7pm and 3pm on Sunday 24th.

Making Tracks will be performed again at the old Cambrian Railway
Station, Oswald Road, Oswsestry next weekend - Thursday, Friday and
Saturday, June 28th-30th at 7pm.

Please go and support LADS and learn a bit of local railway history.

Our Village Hall is nearly finished!

So sorry Colin and all of you out there.  This email would not go at the time and then got lost in `Save as a Draft`.  My apologies.

The redecoration of the Village Hall continues this week, with the work being done by the same team as before - they have done a tremendous job so far.
The work is scheduled for Wed (today), Thursday and Friday, with a second session next week planned as well.

This week we are concentrating on the downstairs of the Hall - both loos and the entrance hall.
There is a bit to finish upstairs (some woodwork needs a second coat) and there are parts of the exterior that need finishing.

We shall work around existing bookings - Zumba is still scheduled for 7:30 on Thursday evening. However, we encourage all users to watch out for wet paint, and you are reminded that clean, polished floors might be a bit slippier than some are at present. But on the "up" side, the lights in the ladies' loo will be brighter (and not so "unflattering") and we will fit a bigger mirror.

If any villager would like to bake a cake for the team for Thursday and Friday I am sure that will be appreciated - the Village Hall Committee and some friends and neighbours did exceptionally well last time, and I have cake for today - thank you all.

Can I remind you all that the Talbot have very generously donated £125 towards the cost of materials, and B&Q in Harlescote have given some discounts on paint etc. - though we have "run them out" of paint sometimes!

SHREWSBURY QUARRY PLAY AREA REOPENED

Part of the Quarry play area in Shrewsbury, which was forced to close due to health and safety reasons, has reopened today, Friday.

The infant section of the playground was closed on June 1 after a routine check of the site revealed signs of a collapsed drain running from the Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre, underneath the site.    The junior section of the play area was unaffected.

Sunday 17th June - 11:30am to 5pm

Church Service  at 6pm

60 GLORIOUS YEARS –

a celebration in flowers and Memories

An exhibition of memorabilia, photographs, souvenirs,

school craft projects and much more.

A trip down memory lane for some, for others a delightful peep into the recent past in a small Shropshire village.

The changes over the 60 years are quite remarkable.

The main London-Holyhead road used to split the village. Articulated lorries thundered through – people hardly mixed with those on the other side of the road, it was too dangerous for the elderly and children to cross.

·       School meals were cooked in the village and the children trooped down a lane that is now almost concealed, to eat their dinner in the Haslehurst Institute – now a house, originally built by the Church as a club to keep the village men out of the numerous pubs.

·       Only one pub left now, plus the Queens Head restaurant, (which used to be a People’s Refreshment House Association temperance hotel!).

·       The first Royal British Legion Harvest Festival to be held in a pub anywhere? – that was in the Fox & Hounds. West Felton – now a row of houses!

·       There were THREE garages – two of them selling petrol, now there are none, the last one disappeared in 2008, now nine family homes on the site.

·       The Montgomery canal at Queens Head had completely disappeared, having been a thriving commercial route until the railway came. Now it is flowing freely again under a ‘new’ road bridge.

·       Who’d have thought? Rednal Airfield, where pilots were trained to fly the iconic Spitfire fighter plane, producing some of the finest air-aces of the era, and where the US Air force landed D-Day wounded personnel for treatment at the Orthopaedic, is now the scene of ‘wars’ with paintball and laser – just for fun. The runway is often a testing ground for air ships and balloons. The giant 'doughnut' that opened the 2010 Commonwealth games in New Delhi was made in Oswestry and tested at Rednal. The airfield is also a thriving industrial estate for small businesses.

The church will be decorated with fabulous flowers

arranged by resident award-winning floral artist.

· Refreshments in the churchyard,

· a ‘treasure hunt’ quiz,

· produce and cakes for sale,

· all the traditional pleasures of a special Shropshire summer day out.

Sunday 6pm: ‘Church Service for everyone’

featuring the Pradoe Singers and the Whittington Choir.

Looking forward to seeing you in West Felton

 Best wishes

Colleen and Des

The Quarry play area in Shrewsbury will be closed until further notice following a suspected drain collapse.

Councillor Steve Charmley,  said: “Our staff at the Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre have changed the timing and reduced the volume of water to the drains to try and alleviate the problem. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and we are working closely with the town council and Severn Trent to reopen the play area as soon as possible.”
