Hello There!

In partnership with Kinokulture Cinema we are excited to announce the launch of Oswestry Film Society

We will be screening films on the first Tuesday of each month, beginning on October 6th at 7.30pm with a showing of Alfred Hitchcock's classic thriller Vertigo (PG).

The Society's aim will be to bring diverse, thought provoking - and not to mention entertaining - films both old and new to the big screen. Each screening will be followed with an opportunity to discuss the merits of the film in Kinokulture's bar.

Oswestry Film Society Membership is only £24, and entitles you to attend all six screenings of Season One - that's a mere £4 a film!

Alternatively tickets will be available for individual screenings at the usual Kinokulture price - £6 (adults) / £4 (under 16).

To purchase membership either visit our website: http://www.oswestryfilmsociety.org.uk/

or visit our online Box Office:
https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/oswestryfilmsociety

Membership can also be purchased in person, on the opening night, by cash or cheque.

You can also visit our Facebook page

Season One
Our programme is a rich mixture of classic cinema and exceptional new British and American independent film.

6th Oct - Vertigo (PG)
"Hitchcock's supreme and most mysterious piece. Paranoia and obsession have never looked better." - Marco Muller.
What better film to open the first season of our film society than the film that finally pushed 'Citizen Kane' off the number one spot as the BFI's 'Greatest Film of All Time'. Yes, you've guessed it... 'Showgirls'! No, just kidding... we are showing Hitchcock's 1958 masterpiece 'Vertigo'. Come and join us for a fabulous evening of cinematic appreciation. Drink, chat and be merry... but above all, be there!

3rd Nov - Love is Strange (15)
Yasujiro Ozu and Woody Allen are director Ira Sach's touchstones for this beautiful New York set film about love. Starring two fabulous character actors, Alfred Molina and John Lithgow, as
a couple who have been together for forty years, now forced to live separately with friends after losing their apartment. Described by critics as both 'subtle and understated' this 'quietly beguiling' film is one not to be missed.

1st Dec - Throne of Blood (PG)
"You have not experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon" - Star Trek VI
Or, should I say, you haven't seen Shakespeare on film until you have seen it in the original Japanese. If you too feel the insignificance of your existence and an awareness of the inability to affect your own destiny then Kurosawa's interpretation of Macbeth will blow your cinematic socks off... or perhaps you'll see it as "a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing" - Macbeth

5th Jan - '71  (15)
Winner of Best Director at the 2014 British Independent Film Awards, this is the story of a British soldier who becomes separated from his unit during a riot in Belfast at the height of the troubles. L.A. Times Critic Kenneth Turan called '71 "a tense thriller from Britain that so adroitly joins physical intensity, emotional authenticity and political acuity that you may find yourself forgetting to take a breath". Do not expect resuscitation from Oswestry Film Society members. That's not part of our remit. Please don't forget to breath!

2nd Feb - Second Coming (15)
Focused on a family living in London, 'Second Coming' is the story of a mother who finds herself inexplicably pregnant, and believes it to be an immaculate conception, hence the title. A gritty British drama from an up and coming writer/director and starring one of our most powerful British actors, Idris Elba, who plays the longstanding boyfriend. On a side note I think Idris Elba should be the next Bond (there's actually a Facebook page). Lets discuss this and many other topics in the bar after the screening.

1st March - The Wolfpack (15)
'The Wolfpack' has won a Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and is the Winner for Best Documentary at this years Edinburgh International Film Festival. Luckily for you we have managed to squeeze it into our fantastic first season. Filmed in New York, it is the fascinating story of the Angulo siblings who were raised in almost complete isolation by their domineering father - isolated except for the world of movies. The six brothers recreated their favourite cinematic experiences such as 'The Dark Knight', even down to a DIY batsuit made out of cereal boxes. The power of escapism that cinema provides is born out in this incredible story. A fitting finale to the Oswestry Film Society's inaugural first season.
