What`s on at British Ironworks Centre

I think I have finally managed to get the BIC to send me regular updates
on what is happening on our doorstep.

Grand daughter Elsa and I went on Wednesday, particularly to visit the
new Zoozbury, where we got to handle snakes, geccos and tarantulas!

The Ironworks was heaving, it is such a good place to take the children,
grand children, elderly parents, visitors to the area etc - and it is
only just down the road!

We had lunch in the cafe which was excellent and served quickly in spite
of the crowds, barely a queue even at 1pm.

Please find attached, their coming events this summer, although I am
sure there will be updates.

Grand 1920s Ball at the Derwen College

Message from Tonia Davies, Derwen College, Gobowen.

A really grand 1920s ball to celebrate the Derwen College`s 90th anniversary.   A great event to raise funds for one of our favourite charities.  See attached poster to get a real flavour of this new event on Saturday 13th May..
---------------------------

Doors open at 7pm and you will be welcomed by the gorgeous Glitter Kittens who will entertain you on stilts during welcome drinks and canapés.

Our compere for the evening is the sensational Liberty Pink who will charm, tease and dazzle us all with her sparkling wit and incredible singing voice.

Students will kick off the evening at 7.30pm with a specially prepared performance to showcase the 1920s theme! This will be followed by Jazz Jive Swing who offer a wonderfully fun style of dance class – so don't forget your dancing shoes!

In terms of live music we have the king of electro-swing DJR who will delight us with twinkly tunes aplenty and we are delighted to also be joined by fabulous local band Hot Jazz Biscuits. If you don't already know these guys then you are in for a treat! They are true musicians who play a whole spectrum of toe-tapping, ear-pleasing, body-shaking music styles.

As always we will immerse you in the unique decadence of the Electro-Swing Ball and surround you with beautiful burlesque and incredible circus performers – fire and ariel hoop!

There will also be food platters served and a cocktail bar for a cheeky cocktail or two. You can take photos with your friends in the photo booth and there will be an auction of fantastic prizes to raise some money for our incredible charity!

Our dress code is optional, but if you'd like to part-take then think 1920s high glamour, swing and flapper, feather boas, red lipstick, high heels and faux fur!

Tickets are priced at £40 each and are available from bookings@derwen.ac.uk

So what are you waiting for? Spread the word, gather your loved ones and start planning your outfit because the Electro-Swing Ball is coming to Derwen College!

Many thanks.

Exhibitions and live music at Willow Gallery

Message from Tereska Williams at Willow Gallery, Oswestry.

Spring Exhibition Opening and Live Music this weekend at Willow Gallery Oswestry

Saturday April 22
LIVE AT THE WILLOW
Vintage music with a modern twist

Bringing the sounds of the 1920s and '30s to Oswestry, the acoustic three-piece FB Pocket Orchestra will be performing live at the Willow on Saturday April 22. The band will play jazz, blues, ragtime and the popular dance music of the day, giving half-forgotten classic tunes a contemporary, foot-tapping and engaging twist.

All the way from Southampton and playing an array of instruments, the trio has emerged as a leading light among a new generation of performers, receiving enthusiastic responses from audiences across the country. This is an opportunity to find out what each instrument adds to the mix and how versatile and free this music can be. Vintage dress is optional!

Admission to the show will be £10 (children £5). The concert starts at 8pm, but early arrivals will have the opportunity to peruse the Gallery's latest exhibition. The licensed bar is open all evening.

Pre-concert dining, Saturday April 22 (served 6.30-7pm)
There is an evening meal option prior to the concert; this must be pre-booked (ring 07773 720425).

Menu:
  • Goat cheese & butternut squash lasagne with a side salad and garlic bread: £8.95
  • Various cakes and deserts available on the night

We sincerely value the support we receive for our exciting live events. Without this, the Gallery would not be able to continue to present such a wonderful range of music and other shows throughout the year.

April 22 – May 27
SPRING OPEN EXHIBITION
Be among the first to see our lively and engaging Spring Open, launching on Saturday April 22 and promising a visual feast.

Pumed Gainc / Fifth Branch

On tour from Wales, 12 artists, forming the collective 'Aberystwyth Illustrators', present a diversity of artworks inspired by the Mabinogi (or Mabinogion as it's also widely known), the earliest prose literature of Britain. All those with an interest in Welsh culture, folklore and myths will be familiar with the four interlinked stories or 'branches' that have come down to us from mediæval times. But there is a sense that there is a missing 'Fifth Branch' of ancient tales not handed down and now lost. The images presented here were inspired by this thought.

Ffeisty Ffelters

>From Shropshire and surrounding borders, this inspirational group of felt-makers really do present a feast for the eyes. Exploring the theme of 'Structure', each person has their own way of interpreting this – and we are treated to a great variety of work ranging from the fine and intricate to the bold and chunky, from 2-dimensional abstract and representational work to 3-dimensional and garment-making. Here is an opportunity to find a unique, handcrafted gift!

Also exhibiting with us

Ronald Moore captures in oil the gorgeous landscapes of the Welsh borders, but also explores urban landscape. His work is held in many private collections in the UK, New York, Australia and a major royal collection.

Erica Herbert paints mostly still life: Matisse, Bonnard and the Scottish Colourists are amongst her influences. Textile artist Lesley Smith creates flora and also solid blocks of rich colours using appliqué and quilting techniques. Sheila J creates beautiful embroidery inspired by flowers and foliage, using both hand and machine stitching.

Compare and contrast the work of contemporary young artists Aaron Scott Templeman and Luke Crump, both with a graphic design background. Aaron revisits Alice in Wonderland in 'The Maddest Tea Party'; Luke is driven by the natural world, wildlife and the environment.

Also featured are watercolours by Mo Denye whose studio 'is the landscape itself'. Stuart McKay, a recent arrival from South Africa, is becoming known for his expressive landscapes of intense colour and light. Llansilin artist, Sara John has a collection of delicate pencil drawings. Judith Samuel is an artist living in North Wales whose paintings are based on the sea, the beach, the subtle light over the sea, and the seabirds who fly there.

There is a background on each artist next to their work.

All exhibited works are for sale unless otherwise indicated by the artist. The exhibition will run until Saturday May 27.

Craft Fair
Join us for our Spring Craft Fair on Saturday 29th April, featuring locally made arts and Crafts.

Tony Robinson coming to Booka in Oswestry

Message from Booka Bookshop, Oswestry.

Sir Tony Robinson is coming to Oswestry!
View this email in your browser

AN EVENING WITH TONY ROBINSON

Much-loved actor, presenter and author with a stellar career lasting over fifty years – Sir Tony Robinson is coming to Oswestry!

Tony's long-awaited autobiography, reveals how the boy from South Woodford went from child stardom in the first stage production of Oliver!, to comedy icon Baldrick, the loyal servant and turnip aficionado in Blackadder.

Like many things, it wasn't all plain sailing though. Along the way he was bullied by Steve Marriott, failed to impress Liza Minnelli and was pushed into a stinking London dock by John Wayne.  He presented Time Team for twenty years, watching countless gardens ruthlessly dug up in the name of archaeology, and risked life and limb filming The Worst Jobs in History.

Join us for an evening with comedy legend, Tony Robinson and his autobiography 'No Cunning Plan' – a funny, self-deprecating and entertaining read, filled with incident and insight. We look forward to what should be a very memorable night.

Join Booka Bookshop for an evening in the company of comedy legend, Sir Tony Robinson, as he talks 'in conversation' about his career and his long-awaited autobiography No Cunning Plan.

Date: Thursday 29th June – 7.30pm (doors 6.45pm)

Venue: The Marches School, Morda Road, Oswestry, SY11 2AR

Tickets: £14 Single Ticket (Admits One & includes a signed copy of No Cunning Plan) or  £20 Couple Ticket (Admits Two and includes one signed copy of No Cunning Plan).

Tickets are selling fast so please don't miss out on what is sure to be a sell out event.
