Broadplace press release - BEWARE COMPUTER SCAMS

Message from Colin Case.

I am aware of at least three computer-users being scammed in the last couple of weeks.

One starting with a phone call from "Microsoft", another starting with a phone call from "Openreach" and lastly, one starting with a phone call from a "Bank".

These are very convincing calls, with apparent references to your name and other personal details, that make them sound even more convincing.  They try to convince you to give them access to your computer – to fix a Windows security issue, or check out problems with broadband speed etc.

They even offer compensation sometimes. But they can't send out less than £2000 and you are only due £500. Can you send them £1500 and they will send you £2000 in return!

What a load of bunkum! But they are VERY convincing and some folk fall for it.

Do not believe a word of any such phone call.

They are ALWAYS a scam. Reputable organisations like Banks, phone companies and Microsoft or Apple etc will NEVER call you.

If you get such a call just hang up. If you are still worried you can call your bank (or whatever) but from a DIFFERENT phone. They don't hang up, so when you try and call from the same phone you just reconnect to the scammers again – whatever number you have dialled.

If you do get taken in NEVER follow instructions to allow access to your computer.

And NEVER give any bank details to anyone on the phone.

There are tons of scam emails as well. NEVER open attachments or visit web pages for ANY email unless it is from someone you know.

These scammers are absolute b******s – they just want your money, and hope you are naïve or vulnerable enough to give them some!

Just hang up – the longer you talk to them the more convincing they sound.

Keep safe – and keep your money safe.
