Film on local wildlife

Message from Tonia Davies, Welshpool.

Please find below information on a Shropshire professional photographer, Tim Mitchell, who is making a Wildlife Film in his spare time for distribution into primary schools in Shropshire, as a way of sharing his passion for the natural world.

Passion, Knowledge and Perseverance Keeps Film on Track.

A collaboration between a photographer and a wildlife artist is set to benefit many young people in Shropshire through an inspirational wildlife film. Tim Mitchell, a photographer based in Oswestry, Shropshire, started filming in 2013 driven by a passion to show off the wildlife on our doorstep and get children involved on a daily basis with the natural world.

“We've got such a fantastic array of wildlife in this area, much of it people are missing and I really want to show that wildlife is accessible to everyone and in particular to get children involved. As soon as you point out the wildlife on our doorstep, kids are instantly fascinated. The film is shot in a local nature reserve but highlights the wildlife around us in our own gardens and what we can do to protect it “ said Tim.

Tim Mitchell is using his photography and filming expertise to create the Wildlife Film in Shropshire and provide it free to schools in Oswestry initially. Through the film, Tim is aiming to encourage children to look around them and see the wildlife that is on their doorstep, to enjoy it and help protect it.  A need for a film presenter led Tim to contact Ben Waddams, the renowned wildlife artist. Ben was equally enthused with the project and both Tim and Ben are doing this work in their free time but are committed to providing a high quality, informative and  fun wildlife film that is accessible for all primary schools in Shropshire and beyond via social media.

Woodside Primary School in Oswestry are involved in this project and have already had a site visit to a nature reserve in north Shropshire. The reserve is a good example where land that was once waste land and quarried for sand and gravel has been created into a woodland nature reserve for all to enjoy. The film is expected to reach children of all ages right across Shropshire and be available for download via social media for anybody to access.

Tim's enthusiasm and passion for the Wildlife Film attracted initial local sponsorship from  OBR Graphics, Seddon Haulage and Tudor Griffiths Group (owners of the woodland nature reserve) as well as other local businesses, but funding has fallen short of what is required to complete the film to the professional and quality standard that Tim demands from it. He is looking for further sponsorship from businesses and organisations who would like to play their part in the community and reach national audiences.

“The idea of the film came to me many years ago, as far back as the early 1990s when I used a video camera for the very first time. Back then it was more difficult to edit video and maintain the quality but new technology has meant that it is possible to keep the quality through editing” said Tim Mitchell.
“Perseverance is the key! Whilst I had  initial funding from local sponsors, I was still left with a shortfall for the specialist equipment needed, then the stormy and wet weather at the end of 2013 prevented many filming days and not forgetting the stars of the show, the wildlife itself, well they didn't always play ball either! A real boost was getting Ben Waddams on board, he's such a respected artist and his enthusiasm to present the film is a real bonus” continued Tim.
“What we need now is sponsorship and any business or organisation who would like to be part of this fantastic project, please do get in contact. I'm very proud of this film and the possible benefits to children and wildlife are enormous.”
