WEST FELTON CARNIVAL - don`t miss it!

Ruyton does not have a carnival any more so lets support the fantastic effort put on by West Felton - our sister in the XI Towns!

The festivities will start with the Carnival King & Queen and their attendants leading a grand procession of decorated floats through the village at 1.30pm from the Punch Bowl pub.

 

This year’s Carnival Queen is Zara Williams and the Carnival King is Robbie Grainger – their attendants are: Phoenix Chadwick, Paige Peel, Robin Sturgess, Sophie Weaver, Ellie Searle, Poppyanne Smart, Nathan Williams, Charlie Brooke, Mia Head and Neave Hayward.

 

“We’re pleased to announce local lad Tim Bamford as this year’s compere –explained Eileen Hamner, the Secretary of West Felton Carnival Committee “plus we can now also confirm the float judges this year are the Reverend Tony and Mrs Alison Sparham and Mr Nigel and Dr Fiona Whittingham

 

“This year’s entertainment includes a skate boarding display, Kickin' Alice – a group of appalachian step dancers, a Samba Drumming band, Hoola-Hoop dancers, a didgeridoo musician, West Felton School Choir, the Porth-y-Waen Silver Band and the Boreatton Scout Drummers” explained Eileen  “There’s truly something for everyone, including a display by the Ellesmere Majorettes, a fun fair, a mini train ride, a puppet show and Jack the Jester,”

 

 “The Hoola Hoop dancers and the didgeridoo musician will also be doing workshops so come along and have a go for yourselves ” explained Eileen,

 

The event will also see a whole array of side stalls and craft stalls plus a tombola, bric-a-brac stand, bottle stall with the tea, cakes and ice cream courtesy of West Felton Women’s Institute, a fully-licensed bar, tasty BBQ and the legendary carnival grand draw with a 1st prize of £100.

 “The village’s playing fields on Tedsmore Road will host the event with gates opening at 2pm and everyone’s welcome to come along and join in the fun.”  Admission is £1.50 for adults and free for children and senior citizens with events and entertainment throughout the afternoon.

Classical Concerts at Llanfyllin Music Festival3

Just a brief reminder that the 2012 Llanfyllin Music Festival commences this Saturday, 14^th July, and that tickets for all three concerts are on sale here at Simon Baynes Books and Music 9-10 Milk St. Shrewsbury our shop.  In the first concert, which takes place at 7.30pm at St Myllin’s Church, Llanfyllin, the Allegri String Quartet will be performing Beethoven’s wonderful A minor quartet, Opus 132, which includes one of his most sublime and entrancing pieces, the “Heiliger Dankgesang” or Holy Song of Thanksgiving, composed as Beethoven was convalescing after a serious illness. 

 On this Saturday only there will be a pre-concert Art and Craft Exhibition, 4pm – 7pm, at the Public Institute, across the road from St Myllin's Church, featuring work from local artists. Refreshments will be available.

URGENT! Oswestry Games - some last chances!

Last chance!

 

The Border Embroiderers have been stitching for months to prepare an exhibition for the Oswestry Games.  Their exhibition runs until this Saturday in the Dunbabbin Room of the Willow Gallery.  The Dunbabbin Room is a separate gallery off the back courtyard of the Willow.  They would greatly appreciate visitors to drop in and have a look at their work.  They would also like visitors to vote for their favourite piece and Oswestry Games medals will be awarded to the winning artists.  (Competitive stitching?!)

 

I hope everyone knows that this exhibition is taking place and that there are still a couple of days to see the fantastic work of this small local group.  The Willow also has a lovely cafe ...!

 

There is also an exhibition of Olympic memorabilia in the Qube and

the chance to help the Qube dress 2012 peg dollies on Sunday afternoon, at the Closing Day of the Oswestry Games.  Please pick up a Games programme from the Leisure Centre or the Library to see what is on.  It will all be over on Monday!

Ruyton W.I Trip to Bletchley Park

Ruyton X1 Towns W.I. is running a trip to Bletchley Park, Bucks. on Monday, 1 October, 2012.  We will leave at 8 a.m., arriving back at approximately 7.30 p.m..  The cost will be approximately £43, made up of £20 coach, £12 guided tour and £10 for refreshments which include a drink on arival, lunch and drink in the afternoon and £1 for the driver.  A £20 deposit is required when booking which is non returnable.

The Queen`s Diamon Jubilee

"This National Festival was duly celebrated in Ruyton on Sunday, June 20th, and Tuesday June 22nd.  The special Service appointed for the Queen`s Accession was used on Sunday, and the special hymn written by the Bishop of Wakefield was sung, and also the National Anthem.  On Tuesday, June 22nd, a large procession was formed at the village Cross, and wended its way, part to the Parish Church and part to the Brownhill Chapel, where hearty thanksgiving services were held.  The Services over, the procession reformerd, and wended its way to Ruyton Towers where a substantial tea, provided by the Jubilee Committee, was in readiness.  The evening was spent in sports, games and dancing, the Shropshire Militia Band being in attendance.  At the close of the evening`s entertainment the Vicar proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. Walford for the active part he had taken in promoting the entertainment, and also for the use of the grounds.   This was carried by acclamation, and Mr. Walford having returned thanks, the National Anthem was again heartily sung.

A Committee has been formed to establish a permanent memorial of the Jubilee".
