Can you help - accommodation for foreign students

Message forwarded by David Sheran, Doctor`s Meadow.

Good afternoon,

I am hoping you might be able to help me. I work for Severnvale Academy in Shrewsbury and we are a Private English Language School. We have some international junior students coming to study with us in July and August and I am looking to see if there might be one or two families in Ruyton XI Towns that might potentially be interested in hosting for the students while they are here. My husband and I will live in Ruyton XI Towns, and we will also be hosting for the students and we think it would be nice if there were a couple of other students in the village. Hosts are paid for this, and in return they will be asked to provide breakfast, a packed lunch and and evening meal. As I commute into Shrewsbury everyday I will collect and drop off the students each day. However I can only fit a maximum of 4 students into my car (to include my 2 students) and so I am looking for one or two families who can help. Alternatively, if there is another potential host that also commutes then this would also help.

Our summer course run from Monday 2nd July through to 10th August, with students studying for 2 or 3 weeks during that period. Students will be out from approximately 8:30am or possibly earlier if they come to my home, and they will not return home until approx 6pm each day Monday through to Saturday. Sunday is the only full day they would have at home with the host family. If hosting for one student the host will be paid £21.50 per night. If hosting for 2 students the host would be paid £20.50 per student, per night. Student ages range from 13-18 however the students I will be hosting for will be 13-14 yrs old and so I think it would be great to have similar ages in the village.

One of the groups coming to study with us is from Spain and they are part of a charitable organisation that supports young people who are perhaps dealing with a family bereavement. These children may have had a family member who worked in the police force for example, and sadly that family member may have passed away.

Do you know of anyone who might have the room, or the availability to do this? Would you be able to pass on the information to people in the village? My husband have not lived here for very long and we really do not any people in the village. I thought your website might be a great place to start.

If you think this is something you might be able to help me with, then I would be happy to answer any questions you might have, and I could drop off some leaflets/information for people to read. In order to host we would require people to note their interest as soon as possible as there are some checks that will be required to process prior to the arrival of the students.

My contact details are as follows:

Many thanks to the 6 Ruyton people who came to visit the garden on Tuesday.  Your support was most appreciated.

Our nursery is looking good, with a selection of perennials, rockery plants, young vegetagable plants, shrubs, fruit bushes and young damson trees.

Just drop me an email to arrange a plant shopping, and of course,

Derwen college Summer Fete 31 May

Message from Eluned Watson, Derwen College.

FAMILY FUN AT DERWEN COLLEGE SUMMER FETE

Derwen College's annual Summer Fete, in Gobowen, near Oswestry, is set to be the liveliest fete yet, with new attractions including a mini steam engine ride for younger guests.

Visitors galore are expected at the event which features games, entertainment, shopping, food, and something for all the family on Thursday 31st May.

Join students, staff and supporters at the specialist college for young adults with learning difficulties and disabilities, when the fete is officially opened by the college's Chair of Governors Kathleen Kimber at 12 noon.

Held during local schools' half-term holidays, the fete has a new location for 2018 and will take place in the college's popular DC Shopping & Leisure area. The event has been moved to the public zones offering more opportunity to visit the Orangery Restaurant, Garden Café and Derwen Garden Centre. It also give visitors the chance to see changes to the Garden Centre which now encompasses the college's popular farm shop, creating a one-stop shopping experience.

Young and old can take part in games, shop at the wide selection of stalls, visit the Pimms stall and enjoy some tasty treats straight from the sizzling barbecue. Children's activities include badge making, cupcake decorating and face painting.

Other highlights include a performance of 'Come Fly With Us' by Creative Arts students, an art exhibition and a grand raffle with a host of fabulous prizes donated by local businesses including a spa day at Lion Quays Hotel and Spa Resort, a coach trip to see the Terracotta Warriors in Liverpool, and a state-of-the-art FitBit.

DC Shopping & Leisure provides a work experience opportunity for the college students as well as providing quality food, drink and shopping opportunities for visitors.

Laura Griffiths, said she was pleased with the new fete location and expected to see even more visitors at the popular day out than previous years.

She said: "In previous years, the fete has been centred around the main college site. We hope that being situated in the busy DC Shopping & Leisure area will be more convenient and tempt more families to join in the fun. As well as all the stalls, games and activities of the fete, there's easy parking and shopping and eating opportunities in our Garden Centre, Orangery Restaurant and Garden Cafe."

The Orangery Restaurant will be open for special fete day afternoon teas. Priced at £7.95 these can be booked by emailing bookings@derwen.ac.uk or by telephone at 01691 661234.

Derwen College Vice CEO and Principal Meryl Green said: "The Summer Fete is always a lovely day out, whatever the weather, and this year we hope it'll be busier than ever. The fete is a great opportunity for visitors to discover the leisure facilities we have on offer at Derwen College while enjoying some fabulous entertainment and stalls. It's a wonderful way to help raise funds for DC Charity and take us another step closer towards our £60,000 annual fundraising target."
