LADS` hilarious, production in September

WHILE we have all been sweltering in the heat, the LADS have swapped BBQs and sun cream for set-building, stagecraft and practising their blood-curdling screams as rehearsals have continued for our September production. The Haunted Through Lounge and Recessed Dining Nook at Farndale Castle is a fast-paced comedy and spine-chilling mystery that combines murder, mayhem … and Tupperware.  Imagine the love child of "Rocky Horror" and "The Play That Goes Wrong" and you won't be far off the mark. Once again, the ladies of the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen's Guild Dramatic Society make a spectacle of themselves. Sympathise with their hapless producer as he does his best to impose order. Attempt to make sense of the enthusiastic sound effects. Learn the importance of a good cleansing and moisturising regime! With multiple role and costume changes, inept prompting and luggage with a mind of its own, this show throws up challenges for everyone – cast, backstage and especially the director! The LADS director Julia Thomas explains, "I have directed a number of plays and they have all brought their own challenges, but The Haunted Through Lounge takes challenging to a whole new level. The demands of synchronising set changes and scripted set failures, entrances and exits, complex lighting and myriad sound effects and props are 'differently challenging' to say the least!" How will they fare? You have to wait until September to find out. Evening performances will be held at Llanymynech Village Hall at 7.45pm on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd September, with a family-friendly matinee at 2.30pm on Sunday 4th.

Gardens open for NGS in August

A little quiet this week, time for us all to draw breath and recover from the exceptional heat.  Just a note, whilst I have the opportunity, to let you know that we will have a stand in the Severn Marquee at the Shrewsbury Flower show which is taking place on the 12th and 13th August.  If you are going to be there, do drop in and say hello. On Sunday 7th August: MERTON, Shepherd's Lane, Bicton, SY3 8BT will again be open from 1 - 5 pm. 3m W of Shrewsbury.  Follow B4380 from Shrewsbury past Shelton for 1m Shepherd's Lane turn L garden signed on R or from A5 by pass at Churncote r'about turn towards Shrewsbury 2nd turn L Shepherds Lane.   Admission for adults £5 Mature ½ acre botanical garden with a rich collection of trees and shrubs inc unusual conifers from around the world. Hardy perennial borders with seasonal flowers and grasses plus an award winning collection of hosta varieties in a woodland setting. Outstanding gunneras in a waterside setting with moisture loving plants. Refreshments in aid of another charity. Children are admitted for free to all Shropshire NGS gardens. Don't forget that many of our gardens are open by arrangement throughout the season.  Find out more here. Have you ever wondered what we do with the money we raise?   Thanks to the generosity of garden owners, volunteers and visitors, the National Garden Scheme has donated over £63 million to some of the UK's best-loved nursing and health charity as well as gardening charities since it was founded in 1927. Originally set up in 1927 to support district nurses, the National Garden Scheme now raises millions of pounds for nursing and health charities each year. We also support charities doing amazing work in gardens and health, grant bursaries to help community gardening projects and support gardeners at the start of their career. In 2021, we donated over £3 million and, despite the challenges of the year, 90p in every £1 raised at the open gardens went straight to our beneficiaries.  You can find more details about our beneficiaries here.

Fire risk on the Cliffe

To all who enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the Cliffe,

                As we have had a considerable period of weather without any significant rainfall, the surface and the undergrowth on the Cliffe has become very dry and dusty, and there is a risk that some inconsiderate behaviour might result in a fire. So, can you PLEASE observe the following simple requests; do

NOT light any fire including a portable barbeque or portable stove, do

NOT drop any glass items that might cause a fire by concentrating sunlight, and do

NOT set up any form of overnight camp.

DO pick up and take home any glass containers others might have discarded on the Cliffe

             By observing these simple rules, we can all help to maintain the natural beauty and the wonderful environment of the Cliffe.
