Look out for elephants in the Darwin Shopping Centre this week
A herd of 20 colourful elephants will be hiding in a Shrewsbury shopping centre next week.
But they won’t be that easy to spot because the creatures will be no more than six inches high by eight inches long and made from papier mache.
The elusive elephants are in the town’s busy Darwin Centre this week as part of a special project by Girl Guiding Shropshire, the Elephant Sculpture Trail.
Michelle Dyer, Co-ordinator for the county’s senior Guides, explained: “We are taking part in a regional arts project which has been set up across the Midlands for ages from five to 26 and part of it was to create a sculpture trail and the girls chose to do elephants.
“Here in Shropshire it has involved the 14-26 age group and they have made and decorated their elephants which will be on display in some of the shop windows in the Darwin Centre this week and the hope is that they will then go on to other towns in the county.
“It’s all about promoting guiding and it’s been a lovely fun thing for the Guides to do and it’s nice for them and their families to see them in the shopping centre.
“We have had elephants made by Guides from Whittington, Ironbridge, Baschurch, Newport, Ellesmere, Pontesbury and Shrewsbury so they have come from all over the county
“Some of them are themed and even named and they have all been lovingly created and our hope is that people will be interested and inspired by what we’ve done because we’d love to see more Guides and Leaders.
“We also hope it generates memories of good times for former Guides who see what the current generation are doing.”
Kevin Lockwood, Manager of the Darwin, Pride Hill and Riverside Shopping Centres, said: “When the Girl Guides approached us as a venue for the Elephrant Sculpture Trail we were delighted to say yes.
“It’s a lovely project and the elephants are really quite special and I’m sure our shoppers will also have fun trying to spot them in the shop windows in the Darwin Centre – it shouldn’t be difficult to spot an elephant, should it?”
