But when a mysterious outbreak of fainting spells plagues the team, Toni's desire for acceptance becomes more complicated. Gorgeously shot and with a mesmerizing score, The Fits is a transformative experience and a marvellous portrait of adolescence. Carlos was betrothed to Elizabeth of Valois (1545-1568), the daughter of France's King Henry II but for political reasons, Elizabeth was ultimately married to Carlos' father Philip II of Spain. Based on the 1787 dramatic poem by Friedrich Schiller, Don Carlo was first performed at the Paris Opéra in 1867 where politics and religion were dangerously entwined. Verdi made extensive revisions to the opera over the following 20 years, and this production follows the four-act 1886 version performed at one of the newest Opera Houses in the world, the Opera di Firenze. The Opera di Firenze has pioneered the perception of opera worldwide, demonstrating it can be both traditional and innovative. Their blend of the classic and contemporary puts Opera di Firenze at the centre of opera, guiding its future for years to come. A car full to the brim with men and kids hurtles across a field in pursuit of a speeding hare. This is the Cutler brood, a gang of thieves with a thing for fast motors. Pa (a glowering Brendan Gleeson) may be the king of the caravan-dwelling clan, but his heir Chad (Michael Fassbender on sparkling form) now has a family of his own and is torn between two life paths: the outlaw way, where his tightly-honed criminal skills are valued, and something else that might offer a different set of opportunities for his kids. Meanwhile, the cops (led by a weasely Rory Kinnear) are closing in. Director Adam Smith (Don't Think: The Chemical Brothers) has an excellent music-video pedigree, evident here as he injects thrills into full-throttle set pieces, whilst detailing the pull of familial bonds and the power games that men play with each other. The Chemical Brothers themselves provide the fresh and adrenalised soundtrack. Nicholson's unforgettable performance as the ingenious, heroic free spirit RP 'Mac' McMurphy, who leads an uprising in the men's ward of a mental hospital run by callous Nurse Rached (Louise Fletcher), won him his first best actor Oscar. Adapted from Ken Kesey's bestselling 1962 novel, directed by Milos Forman (Amadeus, Man on the Moon) and produced by Saul Zaentz (Amadeus, The English Patient) and Michael Douglas (his first producer role), One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest was only the second film ever to win the 'big five' Oscars. It also won six BAFTAs and six Golden Globes. The brilliant supporting cast of hospital patients, who interacted together throughout the story, were selected from over 100 actors after multiple auditions. Mostly unknown at the time, they included Danny DeVito – in his first major role – as Martini, Brad Dourif (Billy Bibbit), who has had a hugely successful stage and screen career ever since, Christopher Lloyd (future star of the Back to the Future trilogy) in his first film role and the Native American painter Will Sampson as Chief Bromden. One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest is considered to be one of the greatest American films of all time. In 1993 it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry of the United States Library of Congress, since it was deemed to be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". This screening is taking place as part of Mental Health Awareness Week. Known as the Baker from Kokkola, Mäki's small-town life expands quickly when he's thrust into the media spotlight. At the same time, he falls in love with a local girl. It's an effective sports biopic, exploring the origins of personal motivation and ramping up a sense of dread as the big match approaches. But rather than offering up a clichéd account of the virtues of small town pleasures versus big city life, the film becomes a charming portrait of an introverted underdog who, though exceptionally gifted at boxing, doesn't see it as the most important thing in the world. Winning the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes, debut director Juho Kuosmanen confidently orchestrates a mood of swooning melancholy that makes the ending even sweeter. Emily Dickinson is a nonconformist who cannot smooth her own sharp edges. Whether as poet, daughter or woman of faith, she finds herself at odds with the diktats of religion and society. Retreating into the bosom of her Massachusetts family, relief comes in the form of a new neighbour, Vryling Buffam, who offers Emily an equal of the mind, as well as some excellent sassy badinage. But Dickinson's longings for romance, and insecurities about her own attractiveness, are at odds with the amount of love she has to give. Featuring a finely curated selection of her poems in voiceover, A Quiet Passion details many facets of Dickinson's character: her wit and linguistic command; an inescapable melancholy, and her poetry's transcendent ability to connect with other people in ways she cannot. Cynthia Nixon is superb in a role spanning Dickinson's adult life, making vivid the notion that the parts of our personality that harden over time are rarely the ones we'd choose. As a biopic, its reach extends well beyond existing lovers of her poetry (although you'll be challenged not to be a fan by the end) and Terence Davies once again proves himself to be astonishingly sensitive to the nature, dreams and disappointments of women. Kate Taylor - BFI "The film is not only a compelling and finally very affecting portrait of the poet as an ageing woman, but another entirely fresh variation on the themes that have preoccupied Davies since his earliest work. To put it simply, there are moments here that are utterly and gloriously Davies: no other filmmaker would have dreamed them up, let alone have executed them with such exquisite delicacy." Upon her arrival, she realised that she was ill-prepared emotionally, not only to endure the dangers of the war itself, but also the conditions of everyday life - including being held in low regard by the men she must work amongst. Martin Freeman, Alfred Molina and Billy Bob Thornton are amongst the impressive supporting cast of this comedy drama. The critics say "Comedy for grown-ups that sometimes struggles with its ambitious brief, but always remembers that the best laughs contain the odd shard of shrapnel." Empire Magazine "Spiked with gallows humour, it has tonal similarities to MASH, and as such it is an entertaining watch." The Observer. The deserving recipient of the Grand Prix at this year's Cannes Film Festival, visionary director Xavier Dolan (Mommy, Heartbeats) adds a thrilling new addition to his string of emotionally volatile, visually sumptuous melodramas. Based on Jean-Luc Lagarce's play Juste la fin du monde, this taut chamber piece follows terminally ill writer Louis (an arresting Gaspard Ulliel), who returns home to break the news of his debilitating condition to his estranged family (a powerhouse cast including Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux and Vincent Cassel). Once there, old wounds and deep seated frustrations surface as Louis struggles to rekindle relationships and articulate the real reason for his unexpected visit. Continuing to prove himself a master visual craftsman, Dolan's bold artistic choices effectively strip the film of its theatrical roots. Shot almost entirely in uncomfortable, claustrophobic close-ups, this may be his most aesthetically divisive film yet, although such showmanship never threatens to overshadow the aching sadness that permeates every scene. Although based on another man's work, the overarching themes of isolation, miscommunication and the queer experience which form the backbone of this arduous family reunion feel decidedly Dolan, albeit a more mature and intimate version than we have seen before. Ben Wheatley's ascent as one of the UK's most dazzling and prolific cinematic talents continues with this ballsy, high-octane action thriller filmed hot-on-the-heels of last year's Festival Gala, High-Rise. Sharp-witted Justine (Brie Larson) brokers a deal on behalf of two Irishmen (Cillian Murphy, Michael Smiley), setting them up to buy a stash of guns from seedy gangsters Vernon (Sharlto Copley) and Ord (Armie Hammer). But the meet-up in a deserted warehouse derails when stoner side-kick Stevo (Sam Riley) recognises one of the two handover guys (Jack Reynor, Noah Taylor) and shots are fired. Dripping with blood, sweat and irony, Free Fire's bravura filmmaking pays knowing tribute to the kinetic cinema of directors such as Sam Peckinpah and Ringo Lam. Wheatley and writing/editing partner Amy Jump's relentlessly playful riff on the shoot-em-up is as fascinated with the slowness of destruction as it is with speed and action. The virtuosic editing and complex staging (it was shot on location in a warehouse outside Brighton) serve not only to propel the mayhem, but also to emphasise just how bloody long it takes, and how messy it is, to obliterate everything. Notionally set in Boston and steeped in 1970s Americana (with threads and hairdos to die for… literally), the crackling script and knockout cast have as much fun with character and dialogue as we do with the fact that there are no mobile phones to save the day. Wheatley fan and supporter Martin Scorsese is one of the executive producers and the film's intermittent, pulsating score is by Geoff Barrow (Portishead) and Ben Salisbury. Clare stewart - BFI "Free Fire is a mad contraption, bristling with bravado and black, sardonic wit." **** The Telegraph "Wheatley continues an unbroken run of quality, helped by a great cast and a startlingly effective premise. Clarke, the team responsible for Hue and Cry (1947) and The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953). Like those films, and Clarke's previous comedy, Passport to Pimlico (d. Henry Cornelius, 1949), it is a piece of thoroughly good-natured escapism. The fantasy here is the perfect robbery - £1 million in gold bullion stolen from the Bank of England and smuggled to France in the form of Eiffel Tower paperweights - and it barely matters that, in the end, the meek master-criminals Holland (Alec Guinness) and Pendlebury (Stanley Holloway) are both captured. Theirs is a harmless daydream, an ultimately mild gesture of defiance against conformity. For all the brilliance of their initial plan, they are finally undone by a very English failing, a lack of competence in foreign languages - Pendlebury's instruction to his French assistant not to sell paperweights from the boxes marked 'R' is misunderstood, because the English 'R' sounds like the French 'A'. Holland and Pendlebury - both nice, gentle and unthreatening in their non-conformity (this is a crime without victims) - are light years away from the more menacing (though no more successful) gang of The Ladykillers (d. Alexander Mackendrick, 1955). Even their partners-in-crime, the Cockney professional thieves Lackery (Sidney James) and Shorty (Alfie Bass) carry not a grain of ruthlessness: they are so trustful of Holland and Pendlebury that they even risk losing their share of the profits (and presumably do). "Both a joyous comedy and a tense thriller. Indeed, its climactic car-chase sequence is easily as dramatic as any of those found in today's summer blockbusters." ***** Telegraph "Charles Crichton's direction is subtle but inventive - check out the snaking, near-single-take opening in a Rio cabana - and the performances, writing and plotting are faultless." ***** Time Out Director: Charle Chrichton Starring: Alec Guinees, Sid James, Stanley Holloway, UK 1951 Run Time 78 mins A free hot drink and piece of cake will be included in the admission price "This project is supported by Film Hub North West Central, proud to be a member of the BFI Film Audience Network" | | |
