Celebrating 90 Years of the National Garden Scheme Our Anniversary Weekend (May 27th – 29th) will see over 370 gardens open to mark 90 years to the day of our first garden openings! On the Whitsun bank holiday Sunday in 1927 our first two gardens opened charging 'a shilling a head' to raise money for the Queen's Nursing Institute (QNI), who managed the district nurses. That year 609 gardens opened, and raised an incredible £8,000. The QNI have been a beneficiary ever since, and in the intervening 89 years we've donated over £50 million to nursing charities. We hope you'll join us for the celebrations over the weekend, and help us to make 2017 our best year yet! We've put together a handy map showing you all of the anniversary gardens open here. | | | Wollerton Old Hall. Open Sunday, May 28th for our Anniversary Weekend. | | To celebrate our anniversary, and the wonderful gardens that open for the scheme, we are launching a photography competition on the first day of our Anniversary Weekend. We are very lucky to have teamed up with BBC Gardeners' World Magazine and Investec Wealth and Investment for the competition, creating some wonderful categories for you to enter. To win, entrants need to take a photo in a National Garden Scheme garden and will be able to submit their image online or by emailing us. More details on prizes, judges and how to enter will be announced very soon! The winner of the Best Overall Photo category will get an exclusive visit to Mary Berry's private garden, with four friends. To hear more about the competition before it opens click here to sign up to our photography competition mailing list. | | | At the National Garden Scheme we're known not only for our fabulous gardens, but also the exceptional tea and cake our garden owners provide for our visitors. Of course, no birthday celebration is complete without a good slice of cake, and as it just so happens our President knows a thing or two about that. Mary Berry has been a National Garden Scheme supporter for many years having first opened her garden for us in 1989, and we were delighted last year when she became our President. To celebrate our 90 years of great gardens and great cake, Mary has given us a fabulous ginger and treacle traybake recipe, which you can find by clicking here. | | | | |
