WARNING - AGS Trees & Landscapes

Important WARNING from Ed Garbet, Park Gate.

Someone claiming to represent this organisation called today offering a professional and reliable landscaping and tree felling service. The leaflet describing the company was very professionally done but an internet search revealed that the genuine article is based in the South West of Scotland. I contacted AGS and it seems that some members of the travelling community are using the same name and logo. They strongly advise against using this company as they are unreliable and will probably not be trained, insured or qualified to carry out any work. Be Aware! Best Regards Ed Garbett

A writer seeks inspiration in the tales of a Guernsey reading group in this British tale of keeping calm and carrying on.

Striking up an unexpected bond with the book club of the title, writer Juliet Ashton quickly becomes enchanted with their tales of island life under the Nazi occupation during WWII. Deciding there's enough material to turn their tale into a book of its own, she travels to Guernsey in order to tell their story. To do so however, she stirs ghosts from the past whose effects are still keenly felt for a community for whom retelling old tales means reliving a nightmare.

Affectionately adapting the bestselling novel, a blend of humour and warm nostalgia ensure this lengthy-titled film will find fans across the ages.

How do you come to terms with the horrors your parents have committed? This moving drama, set at the end of World War 2, tells the story of 14 year old Lore and her siblings as they make a desperate journey across war ravaged   Germany to the safety of their Grandmother's home. Their parents - both staunch Nazis - have been arrested by the Allies, and as the children make their perilous trek they have to face up to the misplaced beliefs of their mother and father. Beautiful cinematography and a haunting mood make this a powerful take on the legacy of the holocaust.

"Beautifully photographed and acted by an exquisite cast of children who never make a single move that is calculated or less than believable." The Observer.    (German with English subtitles)

A new production of the Rolls-Royce of English comedies, Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband, will be broadcast live to cinemas from the Vaudeville Theatre in London's West End.

This entertaining and still topical play brings an act of political sin into the heart of the English home. As an ambitious government minister, Sir Robert Chiltern's smooth ascent to the top seems assured until Mrs Cheveley appears in London with damning proof of his previous financial chicanery.

This is the third play from the Oscar Wilde Season, a year-long celebration of the brilliant Victorian playwright being staged by the Classic Spring Theatre Company.

The formation of Nepal's first circus is told through the stories of two female victims of human trafficking as they rebuild their lives and confront age-old prejudices.

Filmed over six years, Even When I Fall is an intimate and beautiful documentary touching on the importance of education and the need for female empowerment.

Sheetal and Saraswoti met as teenagers in a Kathmandu refuge, survivors of child trafficking to corrupt Indian circuses and brought back across the border to a Nepal they could barely remember.

Even When I Fall traces their journey as they confront the families that sold them, seek acceptance within their own country and begin to build a future. They struggle against the odds and without education, but inadvertently these girls were left with a secret weapon by their captors – their breathtaking  skills as circus artists . With 11 other young trafficking survivors, Sheetal and Saraswoti form Circus Kathmandu – Nepal's first and only circus.

The Leisure Seeker is the nickname of the old RV used by Ella and John Spencer to go on vacation with their children in the 1970s. On a summer morning, to escape a destiny of medical care that would keep them apart forever, the couple leave their adult and intrusive children astonished as they hop on board that dated vehicle and dash down Old Route 1 towards Key West for a new adventure. John is muddle-headed and forgetful but strong, Ella is feeble and fragile but still very lucid, together they seem to barely make up a whole person.

Their trip through an America they no longer recognize – between hilarious moments and others of pure terror - is their chance to retrace their married life nourished by passion and devotion, but also by secret obsessions that abruptly resurface and bring surprising revelations right up to the very end.

The Royal Ballet performs a new production of Tchaikovsky's magnificent classical ballet. Production and additional choreography by Liam Scarlett and designs by John Macfarlane.

Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting. When one of the swans turns into a beautiful woman, Odette, he is enraptured. But she is under a spell that holds her captive, allowing her to regain her human form only at night.

The evil spirit Von Rothbart, arbiter of Odette's curse, disguises his daughter Odile as Odette to trick Siegfried into breaking his vow of love. Fooled, Siegfried declares his love for Odile, and so dooms Odette to suffer under the curse forever.

Swan Lake was Tchaikovsky's first score for ballet. Given its status today as arguably the best loved and most admired of all classical ballets, it is perhaps surprising that at its premiere in 1877 Swan Lake was poorly received. It is thanks to the 1895 production by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov that Swan Lake has become part of not only ballet consciousness but also wider popular culture. That success is secured not only by the sublime, symphonic sweep of Tchaikovsky's score, but also by the striking choreographic contrasts between Petipa's royal palace scenes and the lyric lakeside scenes created by Ivanov.

Swan Lake has had a special role in the repertory of The Royal Ballet since 1934. Since then there has been a succession of productions, the most recent of which was overseen by Anthony Dowell. This Season the Company creates a new production with additional choreography by Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett. Scarlett, while remaining faithful to the Petipa-Ivanov text, will bring fresh eyes to the staging of this classic ballet, in collaboration with his long-term designer John Macfarlane.

A fresh look at the great classic, The Royal Ballet's new production is the Company's first in 30 years.

The film rediscovers Hollywood wild-child Hedy Lamarr, not only as a screen idol but as the brilliant mind who coinvented 1940s wireless technology still used today. Directed by Alexandra Dean and Exec. Produced by Susan Sarandon the screening and Q&A will be broadcast live across the UK and Ireland via satellite by Dogwoof, in partnership with UN Women National Committee UK.

Hollywood star Hedy Lamarr was known as the world's most beautiful woman – Snow White and Cat Woman were both based on her iconic look. However, her arresting looks and glamorous life stood in the way of her being given the credit she deserved as an ingenious inventor whose pioneering work helped revolutionise modern communication. Mislabeled as "just another pretty face," Hedy's true legacy is that of a technological trailblazer.

"A vivid portrait of one of the most remarkable, pioneering women of Hollywood's Golden Age." **** Little White Lies

"Lamarr was an enigma: a great brain trapped in a silly, spurious image of glamour, while her real talent was allowed to wither. A sad but fascinating story." ***** The Guardian

Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda (Still Walking) turns convention on its head with this captivating courtroom drama.

Leading attorney Shigemori takes on the defence of murder-robbery suspect Misumi who served jail time for another murder 30 years ago.

Shigemori's chances of winning the case seem low - his client freely admits his guilt, despite facing the death penalty if he is convicted.

But as he digs deeper into the case, as he hears the testimonies of the victim's family and Misumi himself, the once confident Shigemori begins to doubt whether his client is the murderer after all.

Kore-eda gives a piercing attack on the Japanese death sentence with a film that looks at the complexities of finding the truth.

"The Third Murder is a treat - intrigue-laden shots and cinematography, subtleties in the expressions of the starring cast, spots of dotty humour and an oddly ethereal atmosphere that is gripping." **** Sunday Independent

While at first hesitant to accept the extravagance, she comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes challenging young nanny, Tully (Mackenzie Davis).  A funny, moving, and insightful look at motherhood that features captivating performances by its two female leads.

"[Charlize] Theron and [Mackenzie] Davis are dynamite together, the actresses playing off each other like two sides of the same coin." Indiewire

"With the help of Theron and Davis' magnetic chemistry, Cody and Reitman's synergy, and an intricate yet touching story about motherhood, Tully perfectly blends comedy and drama, creating a powerful, tender meditation on societal stigmas." Film Inquiry

Turn of the 20th century  England; Henslowe Fisk (Jeremy Northam) does his best to raise the spirits of his cantankerous father with their weekly outings. Horatio (Peter O'Toole) willingly joins his son but it does little to cheer him, emotionally distant as he is, dwelling on the loss of a son and his wife. Whilst attending a lecture about the transmigration of souls by a visiting Hindu swami, their paths cross with that of Vicar Dean Spanley (Sam Neill). Spanley invites them both to dinner and a strange evening ensues, one that just might soften Horatio's hard heart.

"This is a delightful, oddly moving film, immaculately acted, carefully skirting whimsy, and nicely located in its period." The Guardian

British actress Sheila Hancock gets a plum role in Simon Hunter's thoughtful, exploratory drama which premiered to acclaim at Edinburgh.

She is Edith 'Edie' Moore, a gruff, bitter woman in her eighties. After the death of her controlling husband George, Edie's already strained relationship with her daughter Nancy begins to worsen, as she tries to convince Nancy that she can still live independently.

Meanwhile, Edie decides to fulfil a long-held dream of climbing a Scottish mountain and against Nancy's wishes, heads to Scotland, employing Jonny (Kevin Guthrie) to get her the right equipment and train her for the gruelling climb. As the pair talk, bicker and have fun, they reveal more about their lives to each other against the sublime landscapes of the Scottish Highlands.

It's a touching, tender portrait of late-life adventure and self-discovery, strengthened by uplifting cinematography and an authentic, career-best performance by Hancock.

"At its heart, director Simon Hunter has created a light and upbeat film that shares a similar tone to Ken Loach's 'The Angels' Share'.  However, peel back the surface and there are underlying themes that challenge the social stereotypes of ageing and friendships within our society." **** Movie Review World

This enthralling film is a wonderful tribute to the late John Hurt. He plays Ralph, a once famous writer who is terminally ill and wants to be reconciled with his long-abandoned son Michael.

Three Billboards is back on our screen for one night only because we had a little gap to fill and we love it so much. So if you missed out last time around make sure to book tickets and if you did see it before then why not experience the ride again?

Martin McDonagh's follow-up to Seven Psychopaths is a characteristically pitch-black comedic drama featuring a blistering central performance from Frances McDormand. It's been seven months since her daughter was murdered and foul-mouthed, tough-as-nails Mildred Hayes (McDormand) is fed up. Fuelled by grief and outraged that the investigation has gone quiet, she provokes the local police department with a series of messages plastered on three disused billboards outside her home town of Ebbing, Missouri.

So begins a rapidly escalating and very public feud between Mildred and venerated community leader and family man, Chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson). The situation is exacerbated when blundering side-kick, Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell) gets involved. Just as unhinged as Mildred, but with a significantly lower IQ, Dixon's penchant for violence is stoked by his leaden, borderline psychotic mother to whom he is unhealthily attached.

McDonagh's screenplays are consistently audacious and his sleight-of-hand here is to make the victim (or more accurately, the victim's mother), a righteous, nasty woman who is just as hell-bent on rebuffing sympathy as she is on getting justice.

Like many of McDonagh's best and most profane characters, Mildred has a fibrous moral code. Her indignant blustering is frequently triggered by social injustice and small-town bigotry – 'it seems to me that the police department is too busy torturing black folks to solve actual crime' – and her increasingly reckless actions are prompted by a deep-seated sense of guilt and regret.

McDonagh's latest exploration of the American psyche is by turns riotously funny and deeply sobering, cutting to the quick of social division and tearing to shreds – like the tattered billboards that Mildred papers over – the all-American dreaminess of the Capra-esque small town. A universally splendid cast is rounded out by Abbie Cornish, Peter Dinklage, John Hawkes, Clarke Peters and Caleb Landry Jones.

Ian McEwan's adaptation of his novel, directed by Dominic Cooke, is an emotionally charged exploration of love, sex and marriage, featuring superb performances by Lady Bird star Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle (Dunkirk).

It is summer 1962, and England has yet to undergo the social changes that ushered in a new morality synonymous with the Swinging Sixies and Beatlemania.

Florence and Edward are just married and honeymooning on the dramatic coastline of Chesil Beach in Dorset. In thier stifling hotel underlying tensions between the young couple surface, casting unexpected shadows across wedding night.

"It's a lyrical and rapturous film - a repressed passion play, funny, delicate and heartbreaking." Variety

"The lead actors are both marvellous... Yet the film's most impressive performance might come from director Dominic Cooke, who has delivered an assured, wistful debut." *** Globe and Mail
