Happy New Year from the Willow Gallery & Café | | A WAY OF SEEING WITH REG TURRELL Homeward I did this painting after a day trip into Wales when we were allowed over the border. I wanted to portray a brisk walk in January on a cold, clear morning. When I thought I'd finished, I puzzled over why it didn't convey what I'd wanted. Briefly, on December 17, Oswestry became the centre of the universe as the world's press - according to the Shropshire Star - descended on the town in response to the news that the North Shropshire parliamentary constituency - in the hands of the Conservative party for nigh on 200 years - had been taken with a handsome majority by the Liberal Democrats in the by-election held the day before. Using the backdrop of the Oswestry Station building, the winning candidate, Helen Morgan, in pink, commits to working for the best interest of all the people of North Shropshire. | | Sickert: A Life in Art At the Walker Gallery, Liverpool A major exhibition showcasing around 100 paintings and 200 drawings by Walter Richard Sickert (1860-1942) See in one of the country's best galleries how this artist chronicled Britain during a period of rapid change. Sickert was drawn into the messy realness of society and was often inspired by music hall, theatrical life and urban scenes. Suspense, c1916 Born in Munich, Sickert moved to Britain as a child. As a young artist, he worked as an apprentice to the American painter James McNeill Whistler who, along with French Impressionist Edgar Degas, greatly influenced Sickert's early work. A prominent figure in the transition from Impressionism to Modernism, he was also one of the first artists to work from photographs. | | | LATE CONSTABLE At the Royal Academy of Arts, London Until 13 February One of Britain's best-loved artists had a radical side that definitely deserves to be seen. Pantone's Color of the Year has been going for 23 years. The colour selected is supposed to sum up the mood of the year, influencing products across fashion, home décor and industrial design. This year's 'Veri Peri', says the company, blends 'the faithfulness and constancy of blue with the energy and excitement of red' and was designed to 'evoke the glowing touchscreens of the digital world and the creative possibilities of the future'. That may sound a little pretentious to some - but expect to see this colour popping up everywhere! | | | Tel: 01691 657575 email: willowgalleryoswestry.gmail.com Website: willowgalleryoswestry.org Facebook: Willow Address: 56 Willow Street, Oswestry, Shropshire SY11 1AD Gallery/Café open Tues-Sat 10am-4pm Closed: Sundays/Mondays/Bank Holidays | | |
