Erin Brokovich (15)
Oswestry Film Society Screening

Tuesday 17th January  7:30pm

Please be aware that Oswestry Film Society Screenings have no trailers the film will start promptly at 7:30pm

An absorbing drama aided by a light touch, a classic story line of David v Goliath, and a scene-stealing performance from Julia Roberts in an early lead role, this film will start the new Oswestry Film Society season with a bang.

Based on a true story, it grabs you from the opening frame to the closing credits. Erin Brockovich (Roberts) is a single mum up against things in life who manages to wangle her way into a job at a local lawyer (a grumpy Albert Finney)'s office. There she stumbles upon a corporation cover-up involving contaminated water that's causing devastating illnesses in a small town, and gets into a fight with big finance determined to keep the contamination hidden.

With sharp direction from Steven Soderbergh, it had top reviews at the time, and it'll have you rooting for the underdog throughout. The film received five Oscar nominations, and a 'best actress' win for Roberts.

While Elizabeth's role has been reduced against her wishes to purely performative, her hunger for knowledge and zest for life makes her more and more restless in Vienna. She travels to England and Bavaria, visiting former lovers and old friends, seeking the excitement and purpose of her youth. With a future of strictly ceremonial duties laid out in front of her, Elizabeth rebels against the hyperbolized image of herself and comes up with a plan to protect her legacy.

Bridgeport, January 2008. A teenage girl is found hanged in her room. While everything points to suicide, the autopsy report reveals something else. Ten years later, the director and cousin of the teenager examine the past causes and future consequences of this unsolved crime. Like an imagined biography, the film will explore the relationship between the security of the living space and the violence that can jeopardize it.

"To tell such a tragic tale with such heart and beauty is a testament to Charles's vision and dedication. Normally a short film creator, I hope she can be convinced to stay within the feature-length world.
Her debut unfurls delicate petals in hues of emotion with a stem of great bravery pushing it up into the sunshine."  The Hackney Citizen

A Love Song (PG)

Friday 27th & Saturday 28th January 7:30pm
Sunday 29th January. 2:00pm (with subtitles)

Faye (Dale Dickey) is a lone traveler biding her time fishing, birding and stargazing at a rural Colorado campground as she awaits the arrival of Lito (Wes Studi), a figure from her past who is navigating his own tentative and nomadic journey across the rugged West. Like the country music that has traditionally channeled the heartbreak and resilience of Americans in search of themselves and others, A Love Song weaves a lyrical and ultimately joyful refrain out of the transformative act of being alone —and reminds us that love can nourish and mystify at any age.

"There's a sparseness and stillness to Max Walker-Silverman's storytelling that is filled by Dickey's terrific, lived-in performance and the brief spark of connection between two lonely people." **** Wendy Ide - The Guardian

"A low-key visual feast of a film, living in this world with these richly drawn characters for a small window of time is a joy unto itself." **** Flickering Myth

Director: Max Walker-Silverman
Starring: Dale Dickey, Wes Studi

Please help us to continue offering a diverse choice of films by taking this short survey

We are thrilled to be supported by Film Hub Midlands through the BFI Film Audience Network with funds from The National Lottery. The aim of this support is to give everyone in the UK the opportunity to enjoy a diverse range of British & international independent films and without this support we would not be able to offer such a wide range of independent & world cinema.

From time to time the BFI ask us to survey a sample of our audience so that they can continue to improve their offer and support for independent cinemas and their audiences.

If you have visited kinokulture over the past few months we hope you will spare a few minutes to take this short online survey and help us to continue bringing a diverse film programme to Oswestry audiences.
