Welcome To Our Late June - Mid July Newsletter

Our Lives, Our World, Our Cinema

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has expressed their concerns and given kind words of support to us over the future of kinokulture. We would also like to thank BFI Film Hub Midlands who are continuing to support us in bringing a wide range of British & international films to Oswestry through the BFI with support from the National Lottery.

The good news is that we are working with the Independent Cinema Office and
our colleagues at the BFI Film Audience Network to build a framework on how we can transfer the cinema over into community ownership. Over the Summer months we will be looking into creating a Community Share Offer which we hope to launch in September  ... so watch this space!

Coming Up this Summer!

Over the summer months we are looking forward to bringing you a great selection of films from Intimate drama to family friendly films and big blockbuster screen action!

In this final week of June we bring you " a rousing tale of love and money" with 'War Pony' set in the Pine Ridge Reservation and made in collaboration with members of the community and  Robert Rodriguez returns to cinemas with the tense thriller 'Hypnotic' starring Ben Affleck.

Hail Caesar! (12A)
Oswestry Film Society Screening

Thursday 4th July 7:30pm

If you missed it when kinokulture screened it back in 2016 be sure to book your tickets!

It's 1951, and the motion picture industry is responding to the threat of television with colourful choreography, escapist romances and biblical epics.

Hail, Caesar! is a fictional story that follows real-life studfio fixer Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), working in the Hollywood film industry, trying to find out what happened to a star actor (George Clooney) who's been kidnapped during the filming of a blockbuster.

This delicious black comedy swings through a series of intertwined stories and sub-plots. You'll wonder just how did the Coens come up with this madcap production and script!

Reality (15)

Wednesday 5th & Thursday 6th July 7:30pm

In June 3, 2017, 25-year-old former American intelligence specialist Reality Winner is confronted by FBI agents arriving at her home. Based on true events, the film's dialogue is directly from the transcript of their tense, transfixing conversation.

Saturday afternoon, June 3, 2017. Twenty-five year old Reality Winner is confronted at her home by the FBI. A cryptic conversation begins and soon Reality's life starts to unravel. With all dialogue taken directly from the FBI's transcript of the interrogation — alternately nail-biting and banal, darkly funny and surreal — we track one woman's experience of the U.S. government at work. And as more details of Reality's life are revealed and more armed men arrive, a complex portrait emerges of an American millennial, yoga teacher, and veteran under siege. REALITY examines truth, power and the U.S. legal system through the lens of one intimate, disconcerting and very real encounter, provoking conversations that endure long after the final frame.

"In its elegant simplicity, its formal daring and superbly subtle and controlled performances, Tina Satter's movie is surely one of the best at the Berlin film festival: an eerily gripping true-life drama concerning people who look like elaborately reanimated, hyperreal ghosts from the past." ***** Peter Bradshaw - The Guardian

Director: Tine Satter
Cast: Sydney Sweeney, Josh Hamilton, Marchánt Davis
USA 2023

Thelma & Louise - Re Release (15)

Friday 14th & Saturday 15th July  7:30pm

Fasten your seatbelts! Thelma & Louise is back in cinemas after being digitally restored from a new 4K 16 bit scan, supervised by director Ridley Scott using the original negative. The film has been restored by The Criterion Collection with participation from MGM Studios and Park Circus.

A bored housewife and a straight-laced waitress at a coffee shop - are best friends who are sick of what they've settled for. Deciding to escape the tedium of their everyday lives, the pair sneak off in Louise's '66 T-bird convertible for a three-day fishing trip with no husbands, no boyfriends and no problems. But things don't go quite according to plan when an encounter with a drunken, foul-mouthed, would-be rapist transforms their quiet getaway into a cross-country escape that will change their lives forever.

"Screenwriter Callie Khouri's desperada road-movie thriller Thelma & Louise is the classic whose Bechdel test credentials go all the way up to the title. Just over 30 years later, it looks punchier, bolder, hotter and sweatier than ever. This is a masterclass in narrative construction and character development and director Ridley Scott puts his pedal to the metal with pure action brio. A warm welcome back to this great popular film."  ***** Peter Bradshaw - The Guardian May 2023

Director: Ridley Scott
Cast: Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis, Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Chris McDonald, Brad Pitt

Local Hero (PG)
Oswestry Film Society Screening

Tuesday 18th July 7:30pm

Can you believe that this year marks the 40th anniversary of this truly wonderful British classic?

The 1983 Bill Forsyth movie was set in Scotland, but Local Hero had a universal story which won over film fans around the world.

An American oil company agent (Peter Riegert) is sent by his boss (Burt Lancaster) to a village on the beautiful Scottish coast in order to purchase it and the surrounding property from the locals - to build an oil refinery.

But things don't go as expected...

Local Hero also brought fame to a phone box in the Aberdeenshire village of Pennan, which played a key role in the film. MacIntyre updates his boss in America each night from the traditional red phone kiosk on the seafront.

Riegert, now 76, recently told the BBC: "It was clear when we were making it that this was as good as it gets. The script was so magical. Local Hero was filled with whimsy metaphor - everything about it was right."

Beautifully shot, it's full of warmth and wit - with the odd tear to be shed too. And after all these years, Riegert added, "I love that the movie still means so much to people."

Happy birthday, Local Hero. Do join us for this special screening to mark the anniversary, and celebrate the film - the wonderful tale, the tight-knit cast (Fulton Mackay, Bill Paterson, Peter Capaldi, Denis Lawson etc), the feel, the scenery, even the Northern Lights - in all its glory in the best way possible: on the big screen.

Please note the film starts at 7:30pm there are no trailers at OFS screenings

Summer Of Queer Cinema: You Can Live Forever (15)

Thursday 20th June  7:30pm

Set in the early 1990s, the film follows teenage misfit Jaime (Anwen O'Driscoll), who is sent to live with her aunt Beth (Liane Balaban) in Quebec's Saguenay region after her father dies and her mother suffers a nervous breakdown. Considering the circumstances, Jaime seems to adjust to her new life well enough, especially given that Beth and her husband Jean-Francois (Antoine Yared) are members of a tight-knit Jehovah's Witness community that seems to have an intense hold on the area.

Forced to trade her Sega Genesis games for interminable church meetings, Jaime keeps to herself with good humour, counting the days until she can be reunited with her mother in Thunder Bay. But then she catches the eye of Marike (June Laporte), whose family attends the same service as her aunt and uncle, and a discrete affection begins to bloom. As the two navigate the treacherous path of going from friends to something more, they are also forced to balance their desires with the watchful, concerned eyes of their family members, including Marike's suspicious and attuned sister Amanda (Deragh Campbell).

ASTEROID CITY takes place in a fictional American desert town circa 1955 where the itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.

"Asteroid City's eccentricity, its elegance, its gaiety, and its sheer profusion of detail within the tableau frame make it such a pleasure. So, too, does its dapper styling of classic American pop culture." **** Gruaniad

We are thrilled to be supported by Film Hub Midlands through the BFI Film Audience Network with funds from The National Lottery. The aim of this support is to give everyone in the UK the opportunity to enjoy a diverse range of British & international independent films and without this support we would not be able to offer such a wide range of independent & world cinema.

From time to time the BFI ask us to survey a sample of our audience so that they can continue to improve their offer and support for independent cinemas and their audiences.

If you have visited kinokulture in June we hope you will spare a few minutes to take this short online survey and help us to continue bringing a diverse film programme to Oswestry audiences.

Journeyman - the Art of Steve Dilworth
A book by Georgina Coburn

For those of you who came along to our premiere screening of 'Stuff The World Is Made Of' the beautiful documentary about Harris based sculptor/maker Steve Dilworth we have some exciting news to share.

After 5 years of research, Georgina Coburn's book 'Journeyman – The Life and Art of Steve Dilworth' is ready for publication. The plan is to release the book in time for Dilworth's autumn exhibition at the Pangolin Gallery in London.

"When I began my research in 2014, I wanted to answer the question of what makes a Dilworth? His work is powerful and its effect on many people, lasting and profound. In Dilworth's objects, as so often in life, what is most valuable is hidden inside. His art holds nature close, in ways our global consumer culture has too long discarded. I think what Dilworth's art connects us to has increasing urgency. The intention behind it and the way that his work is integrated into peoples' lives is unlike anything else in contemporary art. Dilworth's work is a living example of why art matters and acknowledgement of his importance in the history of Art is long overdue. My intention is to shine a light on his uncompromising, visionary work, opening up a wider conversation about the value of art outside the art world." Georgina Coburn.

The book can be pre ordered for £35.00 (including P&P).
