Welcome To Our June Newsletter

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has expressed their concerns and given kind words of support to us over the future of kinokulture. We would also like to thank BFI Film Hub Midlands who are continuing to support us in bringing a wide range of British & international films to Oswestry through the BFI with support from the National Lottery.

The good news is that we are working with the Independent Cinema Office and
our colleagues at the BFI Film Audience Network to build a framework on how we can transfer the cinema over into community ownership. Over the Summer months we will be working on creating a Community Share Offer which we hope to launch in September  ... so watch this space!

Priscilla Queen Of The Desert (15)
Oswestry Film Society Screening

Tuesday 6th June 7:30pm

Approaching its 30th anniversary, this unlikely Aussie success continues to amuse and delight.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a road comedy following two drag queens (Hugo Weaving andf Guy Pearce) and a transgender woman (Terence Stamp) as they journey across the remote Australian Outback from Sydney to Alice Springs in a tour bus that they have named "Priscilla."

Along the way they encounter various groups and individuals, from supportive Aboriginal Australians to hostile back-of-beyond small-towners.

The film was a surprise worldwide hit, and its positive portrayal of LGBT individuals helped to introduce LGBT themes to a mainstream audience.

A clever and witty script, outrageous (Oscar-winning) costumes, stunning scenery, a beaty soundtrack, and above all a darned good story have maintained a kind of iconic popularity for the film - and it's one not to be missed.

"It presents a defiant culture clash in generous, warmly entertaining ways" - the New York Times.

?

While its premise is ripe for comedy - and it certainly delivers its fair share of laughs - 'Priscilla' is also a surprisingly tender and thoughtful road movie with some oustanding performances.

?

Please note the film starts at 7:30pm there are no trailers at OFS screenings

Run Time: 1 hour 43 mins

The Other Fellow (15) + Director's Q&A
Oswestry Film Society Screening

Thursday 8th June 7:30pm
?

Please join us to welcome film director Matt Bauer to Oswestry - the man behind a new docu-drama that's attracting worldwide media attention.

1953. Jamaica. When author Ian Fleming needs a name for his suave, sophisticated secret agent, he steals one from an unaware birdwatcher and creates a pop-culture phenomenon about the ultimate fictional alpha-male.

2023. Seventy years after the publication of the first Bond novel and as all eyes turn on to who could be the seventh 007, filmmaker Matthew Bauer is on a global mission to discover the lasting, contrasting and very personal impacts of sharing such an identity with James Bond.  From the James Bond, who's made his life reflect that of the fictional spy, to the one in prison - and many in between - the film is both intriguing and entertaining (with a decent twist too) that should leave you shaken and stirred

The Oswestry Film Society's own James Bond is delighted to bring Matt Bauer - fresh from his launches in London and other exotic places - to a more cosy Shropshire premiere. Please support us in this coup for Oswestry.

Please note the film starts at 7:30pm there are no trailers at OFS screenings

DANCE CRAZE (12A)
+ DJ Set By The Vinylistas

Friday 9th & Saturday 10th June  7:30pm

The legendary concert film Dance Craze captures the best of 2 Tone Records, the iconic label that emerged from Coventry in 1979 to release the best of the British ska revival. Director Joe Massot ('The Song Remains the Same') and acclaimed cinematographer Joe Dunton filmed 2 Tone bands at various venues over the course of 1980, using the newly invented Steadicam on Super 35mm film to make it look like the camera was dancing along with the beat of the music.

The result is an incredible document of the sheer force and energy of the musicians and fans from one of the most exhilarating post-punk scenes.Dance Craze has now been newly restored to 4K from 70mm materials with a brand new Dolby Atmos sound mix by the British Film Institute in collaboration with Chrysalis records.

Our Resident DJ's The Vinylistas will be playing a pre show set on Friday night and a pre & post show set on Saturday night.

The Blue Caftan (12A)

Wednesday 14th June 7:30pm

This rich, slow-burn drama about the complex relationship between a long-married couple delights with glorious and sensual detail. The Blue Caftan was a huge audience hit at this year's Borderlines Film Festival.

Halim (Saleh Bakri) and Mina (Lubna Azabal) run a caftan shop in the historic Salé medina, producing exquisitely finished handsewn garments. Married for some time, their union nevertheless contains a secret which must be kept quiet in a strictly conservative country like Morocco, and when new circumstances (including the arrival of a young apprentice) arise, so too do new emotional challenges that threaten to upset the careful calibration of their lives. Brilliantly acted, it's an overwhelmingly tender character study and a thoughtful investigation into a country's relationship with tradition and modernity.

Director: Maryam Touzani
Cast: Lubna Azabal, Saleh Bakri, Ayoub Massioui

Our 'Made In Wales' season returns with this fantastical and superbly inventive found footage film made with support from Ffilm Cymru

In 1941, music-loving sisters Thomasina (Emma Appleton) and Martha Hanbury (Stefanie Martini) build a machine called LOLA which can intercept radio and TV broadcasts from the future. While the sisters initially use the machine for small ventures like becoming the first fans of the 1970's music scene, they soon realize that the machine may hold the key to defeating the Nazis.

LOLA proves to be massively effective in shifting the tide of the war, but as Thomasina begins to become carried away with the level of power the machine holds over the future, the sisters soon discover the world-altering consequences of their actions.

"Andrew Legge's imaginative and experimental science-fiction feature commits itself admirably to an outlandish idea, and skilfully weaves black and white found footage into an intriguing, playful movie." *** - Irish Independent

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret (12A)

Friday 16th & Saturday 17th June 7:30pm
Sunday 18th June  2:00pm (subtitled for the Hard Of Hearing)

Controversial on its 1970 publication for its candid study of then-taboo subjects including menstruation and teen sexuality, Judy Blume's classic young adult novel Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret is a timeless coming-of-age story that explores teenage girlhood with insight, humour, and empathy.

In Kelly Fremon Craig's (The Edge of Seventeen) big-screen adaptation, 11-year-old Margaret (Abby Ryder Fortson) is uprooted from her life in New York for the suburbs of New Jersey, where she navigates the messy and tumultuous throes of puberty alongside making friends at her new school and evolving her ideas about religion amidst her parents' interfaith marriage. She relies on her mother, Barbara (Rachel McAdams), who is also struggling to adjust to life outside the city, and her adoring grandmother, Sylvia (Kathy Bates), who isn't happy they moved away – and likes to remind them every chance she gets.

Co-produced by Blume, Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret promises to be a compelling, big-hearted, frank and funny adaptation of one of her most successful (and most often banned) books that should appeal to both newcomers to her work and nostalgic readers alike.

Director: Kelly Fremon Craig
Cast: Rachel McAdams, Abby Ryder Fortson, Elle Graham, Benny Safdie, and Kathy Bates
US 2023

There will Be Blood (15)
Oswestry Film Society Screening

Tuesday 20th June 7:30pm

"An intelligent and enthralling masterpiece" (Time Out) – ranked as an epic in loads of reviews, so it's bizarre that many people haven't seen it.

This fantastic 2007 film is set over the first three decades of the 1900s, following the lust for money and power of ruthless oil prospector Daniel Plainview, played by Daniel Day Lewis (My Left Foot, Gandhi, Lincoln, Last of the Mohicans, A Room With A View, In The Name Of The Father, etc etc).

Day Lewis delivers arguably his best ever performance. An Oscar, a Bafta, a Golden Globe and other awards back that up as he portrays a man who is despicable, yet ambitious and passionate about what he is doing – and who'll do anything to succeed.

Please note the film starts at 7:30pm there are no trailers at OFS screenings

Under The Fig Trees (12A)

Wednesday 21st June  7:30pm

This mellow drama, set in a picturesque Tunisian orchard, is a beautiful reminder of the importance of friendship and savouring the joys of the everyday.

Acclaimed French-Tunisian documentarian Erige Sehiri makes her narrative debut with this beautifully observed, deeply intimate look at a day in the lives of workers on an Tunisian orchard during the summer harvest. Under the sun-dappled trees, a deep connection blossoms between the young men and women as they flirt, develop feelings of attraction and denial, and try to understand one another. Under the Fig Trees is rich with images that bring an observational levity to each fleeting and formative encounter.

The Old Man Movie: Lactopolypse (15)

Thursday 22nd June 7:30pm

"If Jan Ĺ vankmajer and the South Park crew launched a joint takeover of Aardman Animation, they might come up with something as surreal and puerile as this madcap, very funny, yet somehow sweet-natured Estonian stop-motion comedy. Expanding on the Vanamehe Multikas web series of viral shorts starring the cheerfully sinister Old Man farmer character, the feature raises its narrative stakes to a potential ruminant apocalypse, while the bodily function and bovine-inspired clowning is arguably raunchier than ever. Call it Creature Discomforts." Sight & Sound

In a remote Estonian village, three children from the city are forced to spend the summer on their grandfather's farm. Determined to make them see the simple beauty of country living, he sets them to work, only to have them accidentally set loose his prized but thoroughly mistreated cow.

Now they have only 24 hours to find and milk the rogue bovine before its exponentially expanding udders explode and unleash the Lactopalypse. To make matters worse, a decrepit, disgraced farmer and his chainsaw-wielding gang is also determined to catch the animal, with murder on his mind. On their epic journey, our heroes must face festival hippies, vicious forest dwellers, strange woodland sprites, heavy-metal rockers and other dangers commonly found in the Estonian countryside!

Journeyman - the Art of Steve Dilworth
A book by Georgina Coburn

For those of you who came along to our premiere screening of 'Stuff The World Is Made Of' the beautiful documentary about Harris based sculptor/maker Steve Dilworth we have some exciting news to share.

After 5 years of research, Georgina Coburn's book 'Journeyman – The Life and Art of Steve Dilworth' is ready for publication. The plan is to release the book in time for Dilworth's autumn exhibition at the Pangolin Gallery in London.

"When I began my research in 2014, I wanted to answer the question of what makes a Dilworth? His work is powerful and its effect on many people, lasting and profound. In Dilworth's objects, as so often in life, what is most valuable is hidden inside. His art holds nature close, in ways our global consumer culture has too long discarded. I think what Dilworth's art connects us to has increasing urgency. The intention behind it and the way that his work is integrated into peoples' lives is unlike anything else in contemporary art. Dilworth's work is a living example of why art matters and acknowledgement of his importance in the history of Art is long overdue. My intention is to shine a light on his uncompromising, visionary work, opening up a wider conversation about the value of art outside the art world." Georgina Coburn.

The book can be pre ordered for £35.00 (including P&P).
