IMPORTANT WARNING!

Message from Colin Case.

You may have heard on the News about a Virus that holds your computer "to ransom" by encrypting your hard drive - and then demanding £300 to £500 for the "key" to release it.
It is now in circulation, by an attachment to an official-sounding email.

The email pretends to be from your anti-virus programme supplier - AVG, Avast, Microsoft Defender, Symantic or Norton etc.

The text goes something like this:-

Important System Update - requires immediate action

It's highly important to install this security update due to the new malware circulating over the net.
To complete the action please double click on the system patch KB923029 in the attachment.
The installation will run in the silent mode.
Please pay attention to this matter and inform us in case there is a problem.

It is VITAL that you do not open the attachment - a zip file with an exe file inside it.
Just delete the whole thing un-opened.
Your Virus Supplier would NEVER send you an email like this - ALL virus programmes auto-update from their own secure server.

In general, you should NEVER open an attachment to any email unless you know who it is from - this includes the recent spate of MMS photos apparently from Vodaphone or some other mobile operator. Some of these look VERY convincing - but still need to be deleted un-opened.

Apologies if this is teaching grand-mother to suck eggs - but some of these attachments are really damaging, and better safe than sorry.
