Press Release

Market Hall's late-night music & carol event on December 16

Shrewsbury Market Hall will open for a special late night festive event on Wednesday December 16 that will include live music and carols relayed live from the town's annual Christmas concert.

Shoppers and diners will get the chance to sing-along to the annual 'Carols in The Square' concert, which for the first time will be relayed live on screens and speakers inside the Market Hall from 6pm to 7pm.

Ukulele band Communty Uke will also be performing in the market from 7.15pm to 8.30pm and complimentary mince pies and mulled wine will be served to shoppers from 6pm to 8pm.

"We're very excited about having Carols in The Square relayed live inside the Market Hall via speakers and TV screens. It is a wonderful festive event and we'll be handing out song sheets so shoppers and diners can sing-along," said market facilities manager Kate Gittins.

"We're also delighted to welcome back Community Uke who were brilliant when they played here at our previous late night event on November 18."

Many of the market's cafes and restaurants and gift stalls will open late and there will be a Hunt the Father Christmas competition for children.

Traders are also inviting people to take part in a 'Fancydressmass' competition which will be judged by the town's deputy mayor Councillor Ioan Jones. The best festively dressed adult winner will receive a £20 market voucher and the child winner will receive a £10 voucher.

The next two Saturdays before Christmas will also be extra festive in the Market Hall with live performances by bands and choirs.

On Saturday December 12 the performances will be by the Shrewsbury-based choir Of One Accord between 11am and 11.45am, the Shrewsbury Samaritans choir from noon to 1.30pm and the four-piece accoustic band Almost Bluegrass from 1.45pm to 3pm.

The 40-strong choir The Phoenix Singers will fill the market with festive tunes between 11am and noon on Saturday December 19 followed by the folk and country group The Beautiful Barley Boys from 2pm to 4pm.

Shoppers can also get the chance to snap up special golden yellow jute shopping bags that traders have launched to commemorate the Market Hall's 50th anniversary year.

The market is laying on extra opening hours in the run up to Christmas so will be open from Monday December 21 through to Christmas Eve 8am to 4pm.
