What's On at Willow Gallery, Oswestry

Welcome to the Willow Gallery and Eatery's What's On news. We've an exciting programme of workshops now confirmed for this year along with dates for our craft fairs (you'll need to book your stall early, the last two quickly sold out of space)  – and of course there are our Exhibitions and Music Nights.  Something for everyone, our Gift Shop which, like our Gallery, features the work of many local artists including jewellery designers, ceramicists, textile artists and more.

New Year Open Exhibition
Our New Year Open features the work of over 30 artists. The combination of their works has transformed our Gallery once again into a colourful and inspiring place to spend some time. Featuring paintings, sculptures, mixed media and textiles - over 100 original pieces for you to come and enjoy. This is the 3rd New Year Open that we've launched and it features artists may of our regulars will be familiar with alongside artists who are new to the Willow.

Call to Entries – Painting with Words Exhibition 
Would you like your work to feature in our next Open Exhibition?
Coinciding with Oswestry LitFest 2016, the next Open Exhibition at the Willow is titled 'Painting with Words'. Has your art been inspired by a literary association? A song, poem, book, letter from a loved one. This exhibition is open to all media, contact us for an application pack.


Workshops at the Willow Gallery
>From day-long workshops to regular sessions, the Willow's workshops offer you the chance to try your hand at many different art techniques. Our classes usually consists of no more than 10 – 12 people ensuring that everyone has the time they need with the tutor allowing them to get the most out of our friendly and relaxed classes. Why not give it a try…  

Birds and Mammals / Seaweed Illustrations – Classes with Tereska Shepherd
Two courses run by Aberystwyth University's Lifelong Learning Programme will be run at the Willow Gallery. Birds and Mammals is a practical drawing and painting course ideally suited to anyone undertaking field studies and art courses and wishing to develop their observational and recording skills.  This consists of four sessions and begins on February 8th.  (£100 / £80 concessions)
Seaweed Illustrations meanwhile is a two day workshop running over the weekend of 20th and 21st February. This new course will cover specialist watercolour and drawing techniques.

Feltmaking Winter Landscapes with Susan Mulcock

Saturday 27th February, 10am to 4pm    £45 for each workshop.
Sue's workshops are always very popular and this year we will be running two one day workshops.  The first ' Feltmaking Winter Landscapes' will be held on February 27th and 'Feltmaking Waterfall Landscapes' is on Saturday 23rd April, 10am to 4pm. Just bring in a favourite photograph or picture to work from – Sue will provide all the materials you need to create your own felted picture which you can then take home with you.  

Art for Relaxation with Racheal Byron
March 4th, 11th & 18th, 1pm to 3pm    £6 per session 
Art for Relaxation is a three week course, exploring different art materials, and finding space to wind down, switch off and feel good.
This course is for everyone - You don't need to be able to draw or paint, or consider yourself 'good at art'. Just come along and have a go! Art making is a great way to be mindful, to find your creative side, to switch off from the stresses and strains of daily life, and meet likeminded people along the way.

Sewing Workshop for Beginners
Wednesday 23rd March, 10.30am to 4.30pm    £45
Your tutor Carol Grivell, will provide all the materials and equipment needed for you to get to grips with how to use a sewing machine. Numbers in this class are limited to 8 giving each person the time and guidance needed to ensure that when you leave the session you will be confident at using a machine.

Up cycling Textile with Carol Grivell
Wednesday April 6th, 10.00am to 4.30pm    £40
Carol will also be running a one day course on April 6th that will see you design and make a shoulder bag from recycled textiles and accessories.  There are just 9 places available on this course.  You will need to bring along some recycled materials – Carol will however provide all the machinery.

Interpret the Landscape with David Bannister

Thursday 7th April / 14th April / 21st April / 28th April, 10am to 1pm    £75
Demonstrations of techniques using acrylic paints and mediums. 
Quick look at how artists past and present have interpreted landscape. 
Students to bring their own sketches, photos or other reference material to work from. Students to bring own acrylic paints and brushes. Students will aim to complete a landscape painting in acrylic paint on canvas or board by the end of the 4 day workshops. Canvasses and boards will be provided.

Portraiture in Oils – a weekend course with Darren Fraser
Saturday April 9th & Sunday 10th April, 10am to 4pm, Two day workshop for £60
Build your confidence by approaching the subject of Portraiture on a larger scale.  Darren's large, bold and colourful portraits have often been on display at the Willow and his works sells around the world.  Please bring along a good quality image from which you will be working from.  Look for an image which has an interesting angle, colour, contrast and please print these at a good quality. Students will need to bring paints and brushes 

Art of Creative Journaling with Jill Carter

Saturday 16 April, 10.00am to 4.00 pm    £55
Enjoy exploring the space between the pages of your own unique journal, unearthing the imaginative and creative, serious and quirky!  Be inspired to discover diverse ways to use mixed media to create layered tactile pages, documenting memories, stories, dialogue, ideas and experiences. 
Jill will bring along some of her rich archive of journals, memory and photo books to inspire exchange and conversation. The aim will be to share ideas, processes and materials and experiment with subject areas, composition and visual narratives, bringing together, for example, drawings, photographs, writing and text, found and made objects, textiles and sewing, assemblage, collage, storytelling and reportage.

Coastal Scenes – an experimental workshop in acrylics and mixed media with Penny Price
Wednesday 20th April, 10am to 4pm    £38
For painters who wish to take their work in a different direction.
We will look at creating different textural effects combining the use of an assortment of materials including tissue, handmade papers, newspaper print, sand and paste with acrylic paint.
Subject matter will include coastal scenes from your own sketches and photographs.
Some experience with acrylic painting is desirable.

Jamie Smith's Mabon

As part of 'The Space Between Tour', Jamie Smith's Mabon will be appearing at the Willow Gallery on Wednesday 2nd March.  Regular favourties here, Mabon is Wales' finest purveyors of original InterCeltic Music. This promises to be a truly joyful evening and tickets are selling fast.  

Also appearing soon at the Willow Gallery will be The FB Pocket Orchestra on 2nd April; Dan Walsh on May 21st and Remi Harris on Saturday 18th June.  Tickets for all these events can be booked on our website, by telephone or by calling into the Gallery.

Try your own hand at music with Folk, Fiddle, Flute and Mandolin lessons  with Diana.  All tunes are taught by ear so there is no need to read music in these relaxed and friendly atmosphere.  Contact Diana direct on 07983 884411 fiddleandflute@gmail.com

Willow Eatery News and Events


 
2016 sees the change in opening times, now opening at 9.30am and closing at 4.30pm (previously 10.00am-5.00pm). We have started offering a breakfast menu from 9.30am until 11.30am Monday-Saturday. We are now offering a more extensive alcohol selection to include spirits and mixers, plus we are introducing more evening dining events due to the popularity of the ambience and cuisine we can offer.


For Valentine's Day, Sunday 14th February 2016, we are offering an alternative option - the first is a Brunch option from 10.00am - 11.30am with the choice to add prosecco for the occasion, then in the afternoon we are offering Traditional or Prosecco Afternoon Teas from 2.00pm-3.30pm. Places are limited so pre-booking (and pre-ordering for Brunch) is a must. Families and groups welcome. 

If you are unable to make it on the day, we will be making delicious treats including our tasty sea salted caramel Belgian chocolates, sticky toffee puddings, cupcakes and shortbreads for collection to take away on Saturday 13th February 2016.

'Evenings at the Eatery' will begin in March starting with a limited choice of Mexican inspired recipes. Subsequent evenings will look to be once a month thereafter offering a varied selection of cuisine at each event - please check the website for more information. Bookings and pre-orders are a must to guarantee your reservation.

Ticket holders to Music evenings at Willow Gallery are able to dine at Willow Eatery for an evening meal from 6.30pm-7.30pm ready for the musicians to begin at 8.00pm.
