Comment: Hello -

I am helping to set up a new community wildlife group to study Lapwings and Curlews locally as part of a campaign led by Shropshire Wildlife Trust and Shropshire Ornithological Society. I wondered whether members of your Walking or Garden groups would be interested in the project.

As you may know, the populations of these once-familiar birds have plummeted in recent years. This project aims to establish where they can still be found, and then to work with landowners and farmers to attempt to reverse the decline.

The proposed study area extends from Oswestry in the north to Kinnerley in the south, and eastwards from Nantmawr to Ruyton-XI-Towns: it's one of the few remaining Curlew hotspots in Shropshire. It's a large area, and we'll need at least 30 helpers to cover it fully! We are trying to reach as many local people as possible, not only to carry out the survey but also to cultivate interest in our remaining Lapwings and Curlews.

We are holding a launch meeting at 7.30pm on Wednesday 7th March at Morda Social Club, open to anyone who'd like to know more about these wonderful birds and what can be done to help them. You don't need to be an expert birdwatcher to take part: everyone's welcome!

I would be most grateful if you could share this with your members. I have a leaflet which I could send you, either by email or post, giving further information or please contact me by email or phone.

Thank you very much; I look forward to hearing from you.

With best wishes
Claire
