Eventually mother to politician Shirley Williams, Brittain's autobiography is a seminal text depicting a life altered by history and also a vivid portrayal of the development of an instinctive and distinctive writer, a woman finding her own voice and the conviction to speak. This is a faithfully rendered interpretation following Vera from her teenage years as an academically ambitious teenager in pre-WWI England, horsing around with her brother and his school friends, through to the shattering impact the war has on all of their lives, their dreams and their futures. There is stellar acting talent on display from a uniformly excellent cast, a keen visual eye which contrasts the lyricism of a pastoral idyll with the mud and grit of the trenches and at its centre, a poignant and heartfelt depiction of grief and loss. "..a restrained cinematic polish that feels wholly appropriate to its subject: it's soberly moving" **** - Tim Robey, The Telegraph "Traditional, heartfelt and stirring in all the right ways, the filmfeels as though it is the natural successor to the war romances of Powell and Pressburger." - Wendy Ide, The Times Director: James Kent Starring: Alicia Vikander, Kit Harington, Hayley Atwell, Dominic West UK, 2015 Run time: 2 hours 10 minutes | | | RSC Live: Love's Labour's Won (Or Much Ado About Nothing) (12A) Wednesday 4th March 7:00pm SOLD OUT Following our sell out broadcast of Love's Labour's Lost and as part of a season marking the centenary of the First World War, Christopher Luscombe returns to the Royal Shakespeare Company to direct a single company of actors in a fresh pairing of two of Shakespeare's most sparkling comedies, set in a splendid country house just before and just after the war. Returning to the RSC are Edward Bennett and Michelle Terry, who will play the lovers in both productions. Autumn 1918. A group of soldiers return from the trenches. The world-weary Benedick and his friend Claudio find themselves reacquainted with Beatrice and Hero. As memories of conflict give way to a life of parties and masked balls, Claudio and Hero fall madly, deeply in love, while Benedick and Beatrice reignite their own altogether more combative courtship. Shakespeare's comic romance plays out amidst the brittle high spirits of a post-war house party, as youthful passions run riot, lovers are deceived and happiness is threatened – before peace ultimately wins out. This is a live screening of a new production of Love's Labour's Won, which plays in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon from 3 October 2014 – 14 March 2015. Run time: 160 mins Tickets for this live broadcast are now sold out. | | | National Gallery (12A) Borderlines Film Festival Saturday 7th March 2:00pm Tickets: £6.00 Adult/£4.00 Under 16's Book online: http://www.kinokulture.org.uk/national-gallery/4588114644 Or call the Box Office: 0845 2500517 (local rate) After his magisterial accounts of the Paris Opera Ballet in La Danse and the University of California in At Berkeley, documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman explores another august cultural institution, London's National Gallery. Running just shy of a mesmerising three hours, this is a richly detailed, beautifully nuanced portrait of the gallery's working life, from the difficult financial decisions facing the charity's executives to visitors' awed appreciation of its blockbuster exhibitions. Combining a vivid sense of how vast the gallery's many activities are with an eye for droll observational detail, the film finds Wiseman in commanding control of his material. And perhaps unsurprisingly for such a tireless and painstaking artist, we ultimately find him drawn to the work of other visual practitioners, notably the gallery's restorers and curators. A profound meditation on the act of looking, National Gallery is a triumphant summation of Wiseman's career to date. "Truly inspiring…a great, great film. It's like being lulled with intelligence." "…It's beautifully organised, and there's no way you could possibly watch it without learning all kinds of stuff." –Tim Robey, The Telegraph Director: Frederick Wiseman USA/France 2014 Run time: 2 hours 53 mins | | | A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence (15) Borderlines Film Festival Special Preview Screenings Tuesday 10th March 7:30pm Friday 13th March 1:30pm Tickets: £6.00 Adult/£4.00 Under 16's Book online: http://www.kinokulture.org.uk/a-pigeon-sat-on-a-branch/4588114710 Or call the Box Office: 0845 2500517 (local rate) We are pleased to present this preview screening before general release in the UK of the Winner of the Golden Lion, Venice Film Festival 2014. An absurdist, surrealistic and shocking pitch-black comedy, which moves freely from nightmare to fantasy to hilariously deadpan humour as it muses on man's perpetual inhumanity to man. Embodying the Swedish spirit through phrasing, mood and general interactions; capturing the sharp tongue and redundancy of speech that feels like a definition of a tired society, but a society that still has an underlying humaneness to its intentions. The two main characters represent two regular tempers; one who is gloomy, but sensitive, who's become beaten by the world, and another that is irritable and brushes off anything that has the possibility of confronting his hidden despair. This is a world dominated by morose and resigned people, but there are still glimmers of humanity within them, even if its interrupted by snarky remarks and half-hearted advice. Captured through static shots and long, but vivid, sequences, Anderson has made another film that captures the absurdities of the human condition through deadpan and sardonic humor. A pigeon.... is a film that will keep a persistent grin on your face as you experience an odd and tragic world seen through a comedic lens. "The year's most glorious (and funniest) film" Little White Lies Magazine "…a species of existential comedy, playing out like a series of skits by Beckett, a sort of Saturday Night Live of the soul." Catherine Bray, Hitflix "Roy Andersson's series of comic sketches may be untranslatable cinema, but it's heaven." ***** - The Telegraph " What a bold, beguiling and utterly unclassifiable director Andersson is. He thinks life is a comedy and feels it's a tragedy, and is able to wrestle these conflicting impulses into a gorgeous, deadpan deadlock. ENO Screen, a partnership between English National Opera and AltiveMedia, was launched in 2013. ENO Screen's live cinema broadcasts are as distinctive as ENO's live work in the theatre, creating a unique cinematic experience for audience members across the globe. Multiple HD cameras provide unusual angles and close up views of the action on stage and in the orchestra pit, giving a true cinematic experience for audiences. ENO presents the first revival of Peter Konwitschny's celebrated production of one the most popular operas of all time. La traviata tells the devastating tale of Violetta, the beautiful Parisian courtesan who shatters convention and sacrifices everything for love. Verdi's masterpiece combines compelling characters with hugely moving and instantly recognisable melodies making it one of the most emotionally engaging and popular operas of all time. Making her UK debut in the role of Violetta, which launched the European career of soprano Corinne Winters in 2013, is young superstar soprano Elizabeth Zharoff. Fast emerging as one of opera's most exciting young artists, Zharoff was a member of the Junges Ensemble at the Semperoper Dresden in their 2012-13 season, where she performed the role of Violetta for the first time. ENO Harewood Artist and Wigmore Hall Emerging Talent Ben Johnson returns as Alfredo. He was most recently seen at the London Coliseum singing the role of Tamino in Simon McBurney's production of The Magic Flute, where he sang 'superbly throughout' (Daily Express). In 2013 he was awarded the Audience Prize at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World. British mezzo soprano and former ENO Opera Works student Clare Presland will sing the role of Flora while acclaimed British baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore, revisits the role of Germont. Paul Hopwood (Gaston), Matthew Hargreaves (Baron Douphol), Charles Johnston (Marquis d'Obigny), Martin Lamb (Dr Grenvil) and Valerie Reid (Annina) will also revive their roles from the 2013 performances. La traviata is conducted by Roland Böer. Music Director of the Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte in Montepulciano, he first appeared at the London Coliseum in 2005, where he 'thrillingly conducted' (Financial Times) David McVicar's production of La clemenza di Tito. German opera director Peter Konwitschny has built a reputation over four decades for his insightful Wagner, Strauss and Verdi interpretations. The original performances of this production marked Konwitschny's UK directorial debut. This Olivier Award Nominated production cuts to the very heart of the opera's themes of passion, love and tragic death with a modern, uncluttered staging and a running time of less than 2 hours. La traviata is sung in English with Subtitles | Running time: 1hr 50mins (no interval) The 2015 ENO Screen season also includes The Pirates of Penzance on Tuesday 19 May and Carmen on Wednesday 1 July. ENO Screen broadcasts are produced by Serpent Productions, led by MTV award-winning director and Grammy award nominee Andy Morahan and Producer Dione Orrom. | | | NT Live: Behind The Beautiful Forevers (12A) Oswestry LitFest Thursday 12th March 7:00pm (Please note the 7:00pm Broadcast time with doors opening at 6:30pm) Tickets: £12.00 Adult/£10 Under 16's Book online: http://www.kinokulture.org.uk/behind-the-beautifull-forever/4588005182 Or call the Box Office: 0845 2500517 (local rate) A new play by David Hare, based on the book by Katherine Boo Meera Syal (The Kumars, Goodness Gracious Me, Rafta Rafta at the National) returns to the National Theatre, directed by Rufus Norris (Broken, London Road). Pulizter Prize-winner Katherine Boo spent three years in Annawadi recording the lives of its residents. From her uncompromising book, winner of the National Book Award for Non-Fiction 2012, David Hare has fashioned a tumultuous play on an epic scale. India is surging with global ambition. But beyond the luxury hotels surrounding Mumbai airport lies a makeshift slum, full of people with plans of their own. Zehrunisa and her son Abdul aim to recycle enough rubbish to fund a proper house. Sunil, twelve and stunted, wants to eat until he's as tall as Kalu the thief. Asha seeks to steal government anti-poverty funds to turn herself into a 'first-class person', while her daughter Manju intends to become the slum's first female graduate. But their schemes are fragile; global recession threatens the garbage trade, and another slum-dweller is about to make an accusation that will destroy herself and shatter the neighbourhood. The Duke Of Burgundy is an intensely erotic melodrama that has already received huge praise at early festival screenings. Cynthia, (Sidse Babett Knudsen) a lepidopterist (the title of the film refers to a rare type of butterfly) seems to treat her newly hired housekeeper Evelyn (Chiara D'Anna) with dismissive cruelty. In time we discover that they are entwined in a very curious, very particular S&M relationship, which Strickland invites us to view, but not judge. Despite the explicit sex scenes, this is a beguiling, tender, even humorous film with a heightened sense of emotion, confirming Strickland as one of the UK's most ambitious and intellectually probing filmmakers. "Knudsen and D'Anna are both terrific, and have tremblingly palpable chemistry, although the film is so teasing and elusive that after one viewing, you just want to watch the thing again" **** - The Telegraph Director: Peter Strickland Starring: Sidse Babett Knudsen, Chiara D'Anna, Monica Swinn UK, 2014 Run time: 1 hour 41 minutes | | | Life Of Riley (Aimer, boire et chanter) (12A) Best Of British & World Cinema Saturday 14th March 1:30pm Wednesday 18th March 1:30pm Saturday 21st March 7:30pm Tickets: £6.00 Adult/£4.00 Under 16's Book online: http://www.kinokulture.org.uk/life-of-riley/4588237896 Or call the Box Office: 0845 2500517 (local rate) At the Berlinale, weeks before he died, Alain Resnais' final film won the nonagenarian a Silver Bear for opening new perspectives in cinema. A faithful yet mischievous adaptation of a play by his friend Alan Ayckbourn, it charts the responses of three couples – especially the women – to the news that their friend George Riley (never seen in the film) has just months to live. Stressing the theatrical artifice of a storyline which is itself about amateur dramatics and role-playing, Resnais elicits excellent performances from his cast, who speak French while inhabiting a surreal Yorkshire of the mind comprised of stylised sets, cartoons and roadscapes. A wise, witty, admirably airy look at life, love and death by one of film's greatest modernists. Alain Resnais' final film is another example of his inventiveness and wit. In an ever-changing world, individuals are increasingly called upon to respond with initiative, flexibility and responsibility. For over ninety years students educated in Steiner Waldorf schools have been proving themselves to be resourceful and creative individuals, not only equipped to meet life's challenges but to be world citizens supported by an education which enhances mutual understanding and global co-operation in practice. Ingrid Knowles, a former student, mother and teacher at various Steiner schools will show this film and lead the discussion afterwards in an exploration into the possibility of starting a Steiner school in Oswestry. Writer Stephanie Boland will introduce the screening, drawing on her time spent at the Joyce Foundation (home to the reading group) and her own experience of Finnegan's Wake. A group of people have been reading a book together for thirty years. They have been reading it again and again, with each journey from the first to the last page taking eleven years. Once they reach the last word, a very enigmatic "the," they begin again with the first word, "riverrun." The text appears inexhaustible, its interpretation endless, the inconclusive nature of the reading exciting. The world seems to cease existing outside this reading room or, perhaps, it exists because of it. The Joycean Society received a special mention at Transcinema (PE). Director Dora Garcia has been a quietly prominent art-world presence for over a decade, and represented her native Spain at the 2010 Venice Biennale. Her work has often involved certain film-related elements and several of these have been shown in festivals such as Rotterdam, but The Joycean Society is the first time she's ventured beyond short durations. And while part of a typically adventurous multi-media project that involves an exhibition and a book, the film stands perfectly well on its own and can be enjoyed by those only dimly aware of Joyce, Ireland's titan of the 20th Century. Dir: Dora Garcia Belgium 2013 Run time: 52 mins Kinetics is a two year project in association with The Independent Cinema Office supported by Arts Council England. Throughout this period we will be exploring different aspects of experimental cinema and artists film. | | | | | | Rory Motion Live Thursday 19th March 8:00pm Tickets: £8.00 Adult/£5.00 Under 16's Book online: http://www.kinokulture.org.uk/rory-motion/4588115796 Or call the Box Office: 0845 2500517 (local rate) We are pleased to present a live performance by poet, singer/songwriter, comedian & artist Rory Motion. For the last twenty five years Rory has delighted audiences with his deceptively laid-back style, keen intelligence and quirky wit. A regular contributor to national radio, he has appeared on comedy shows, the literature panel game 'Booked' with Roger McGough and Miles Kington, and written and presented his own programmes on Radios 4 and 5. In 2001, Rory and fellow poet Matt Harvey created a series of programmes called 'One Night Stanza' which, in a victory for poetry lovers everywhere, made the coveted 6:30 Radio 4 comedy slot. In the same year Cassells published Rory's collection of poems, 'Neither is the Horse'. Rory's fascination and evident facility with language has led him to perform in other tongues. In his French-speaking persona, Raymond Bizarre, Rory enjoyed a network radio hit in France with his epic homage to Eric Cantona, and in a triumphant accolade for the Englishman abroad, the disc was played before international matches at the Parc de Princes on several occasions. In 2004 he travelled to the remote shores of Lake Malawi, in Mozambique, and performed to different villages in the local language of Chi Nyanja, an offshoot of Swahili. The results of this remarkable adventure were recorded in a half-hour programme called 'Hi Nyanja', for Radio 4 . In this stripped-back, fresh and fast-paced version, BAFTA nominee Maxine Peake creates a Hamlet for now, giving a performance hailed as "delicately ferocious" by The Guardian and "a milestone Hamlet" by the Manchester Evening News. Hamlet is Shakespeare's most iconic work. The play explodes with big ideas and is the ultimate story of loyalty, love, betrayal, murder and madness. Hamlet's father is dead and Denmark has crowned a new king. Consumed by grief, he struggles to exact revenge, with devastating consequences. This groundbreaking stage production, directed by Sarah Frankcom, was the Royal Exchange's fastest-selling show in a decade. Alongside Maxine Peake as the eponymous prince, a number of other roles, including Polonious and Rosencrantz, are also played by women. Hamlet is brought to cinemas by director Margaret Williams, whose Written on Skin for the Royal Opera House/BBC won the Gramophone Contemporary Award and the Diapason d'Or, and producers Anne Beresford and Debbie Gray, the team behind the highly successful cinema broadcast of Peter Grimes on Aldeburgh Beach. Returning to Rome from a war against the Goths, the general Titus Andronicus brings with him the queen Tamora and her three sons as prisoners of war. Titus' sacrifice of Tamora's eldest son to appease the ghosts of his 21 dead sons, and his decision to refuse to accept the title of emperor, initiates a terrible cycle of mutilation, rape and murder, At the centre of the nightmare moves the self-delighting Aaron. Spectacularly, even grotesquely violent and daringly experimental, Titus was the smash hit of Shakepeare's early career, and is written with a ghoulish energy he was never to repeat elsewhere. The 2015 cinema release will have audiences on the edges of their seats from start to grisly end. "William Houston (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows; Elizabeth: The Golden Age) is magnetic in the title role; his interpretation of the Bard's imagined Roman general strikes the right balance between war-weary, melancholy and blood-thirsty lunacy, while Indira Varma's (Game of Thrones; Rome) revenge-mad Gothic queen Tamora is deliciously devious – prancing about the stage like a wicked witch, sewing seeds of conspiracy together with her lover Aaron (Obi Abili) and two sons (Samuel Edward-Cook and Brian Martin). This new production may not be one for the kids, but is an enthralling and wonderfully ghastly rendition of one of Shakespeare's less-known, yet timeless historical plays." ***** - Mark Sempill The Upcoming Audience warning this production contains scenes of blood and violence.
