| YOUTH (15) Borderlines Film Festival Tuesday 1st March 1:30pm Wednesday 2nd March 7:30pm Thursday 3rd March 1:30pm Tickets: £6.50 Adult/£4.50 Under 16's https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/event/118646 Or call the Box Office: 01691 238167 From the director of The Great Beauty, this delicious bittersweet drama is set in the worlds of film and music and features a tour de force performance by Michael Caine. Set largely in a luxury Swiss spa, Youth is a deliciously bittersweet drama from acclaimed Italian director Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty). It focuses on the friendship between Fred (Michael Caine, in scintillating form), a curmudgeonly retired composer and elderly film director Mick (Harvey Keitel). Fred is resisting attempts to revive his greatest work, while Mick is desperate to make a comeback movie starring his former muse and favoured actress Brenda (Jane Fonda). If that weren't enough, members of Fred's family suddenly arrive on the scene. Sorrentino demonstrates his complete mastery of storytelling by skilfully weaving the various narrative strands into a moving, funny and affecting whole. Stylish, witty and emotionally resonant, Youth also features sharp and smart references to pop culture – including a cameo by Paloma Faith – as well as movies past and present. It offers further evidence, if any were needed, of Sorrentino's position as one of contemporary cinema's finest filmmakers. - Adrian Wootton BFI Director: Paolo Sorrentino Starring: Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Weisz, Paul Dano, Jane Fonda Italy 2015 Run time: 124 mins English Language | |
| The Wolfpack (15) Oswestry Film Society Screening Tuesday 1st March 7:30pm Tickets: £6.00 Adult/£4.00 Under 16's on the door Or entry with an Oswestry Film Society Season 1 Membership Card 'The Wolfpack' has won a Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and was the Winner for Best Documentary at the 2015 Edinburgh International Film Festival. Luckily for you we have managed to squeeze it into our fantastic first season. Filmed in New York, it is the fascinating story of the Angulo siblings who were raised in almost complete isolation by their domineering father - isolated except for the world of movies. The six brothers recreated their favourite cinematic experiences such as 'The Dark Knight', even down to a DIY batsuit made out of cereal boxes. The power of escapism that cinema provides is born out in this incredible story. A fitting finale to the Oswestry Film Society's inaugural first season. "(director) Moselle's affection for these tough-talking whelps brings you gradually, optimistically, inside their world of gritty make-believe, and you root for them to take their lives conclusively into their own hands." - Tim Robey, Daily Telegraph "a testament to movie love" - Michael Atkinson, Sight & Sound. "a profoundly compelling..piece of documentary making" - Adam Woodward, Little White Lies. Run time: 90 mins | |

But what's the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they've abolished hanging? Amongst the cub reporters and pub regulars dying to hear Harry's reaction to the news, his old assistant Syd (Andy Nyman – Peaky Blinders, Death at a Funeral) and the peculiar Mooney (Johnny Flynn – Clouds of Sils Maria) lurk with very different motives for their visit. Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy star in an enthralling revenge western from the director of Birdman. Fur trapper Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is leading a hunting party in 1820s South Dakota when he's attacked and viciously mauled by a bear. Rather than tending to his wounds, the frontiersman's traitorous companions, led by John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), decide to abandon him. They kill his half-Native American son and leave Glass to perish in a shallow grave. But he survives. Now he must brave warring tribes, a savage environment and a ferociously harsh winter on a 120-mile trek to take his revenge. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's raw and gritty follow-up to the Oscar-winning Birdman is based on an extraordinary true story of betrayal, survival and ultimate redemption. Its incredible authenticity stems from Inarritu's determination to film Glass's gruelling ordeal using natural light in genuinely unforgiving locations. Humour is built into the set-up's premise, as two aging and unmarried brothers and sheepmen live in houses right next to each other on a stunning barren landscape but haven't spoken in forty years. They may not have women or children but, boy, do they love their rams, expertly bred and groomed critters in which their owners take infinite pride. But Gummi (Sigurður Sigurjónsson) and Kiddi (Theodór JúlÃusson) are finally forced to speak to each other when a disease threatens their treasured rams. Director Hákonarson's film is observed with the skill of a seasoned documentarist, and the two leads, along with the beautifully barren Icelandic countryside, lift the film to the next level. Uniquely humorous, and emotionally complex. "Beyond farming, there is something special about sheep," says writer-director GrÃmur Hákonarson, adding: "Most farmers I know have a stronger connection to sheep than to other domesticated animals." This will ring true with anyone who saw Magali Pettier's eye-opening British documentary Addicted To Sheep to which this darkly comedic drama, by turns hilarious and heartbreaking, provides a deadpan Nordic riposte. **** The Guardian And oh yes ... The sheep are listed in the cast credits! Director: GrÃmur Hákonarson Iceland 2015 Run time: 93 mins Icelandic with English subtitles | |
| Bontok, Rapeless (Walang Rape Sa Bontok) (12A) Tuesday 8th March 7:00pm Tickets: £6.00 Adult/£4.00 Under 16's Book online: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/date/233014 Or call the Box Office: 01691 238167 Profits from this screening will be divided between the film-makers and Soroptimist International charity whose mission is to educate, empower and provide opportunities for women and girls internationally. The first ever UK screening of this award winning powerful documentary is brought to us by Alyana Nonan through the Shropshire Young Health Champions Project for International Women's Day. Two Filipinas, both victims of sexual abuse in varying degrees, yearn and search for a utopia where women can live without being sexually violated. By chance, they encounter a study by renowned anthropologist June Prill-Brett, Ph.D., which states that the Bontok of the Philippine Cordilleras has lived for eras without a term, nor concept, nor incidence, of rape. At last, a utopia, where the most heinous of gender crimes is unheard of. Or, is it? The search centers on the municipality of Bontoc, the locus of Bontok culture. Alas, the move to completely revalidate Dr. Bretts statement is a generation too late. Oral tradition is now seldom retold, and the last generation of Bontok Igorots who have lived in the traditional ato and olog are already in their twilight years. Through judiciary archives, local government records, and the oral narratives of Bontok elders, the mission does find its holy grail, albeit almost dead: suffocating under the inevitable weight of alien culture and mass media. If at all, the rape-less society still exists, but only within very small, tightly-knit Bontok communes. Still exists, but trapped in the rapidly-fading past: the last evidence proving its very existence is the collective memory of Bontok elders who do not even know each other, all saying Idi, awan! Tatta, addan (In our days, there was none! But today, there is rape) In this world where the universality of women oppression is widely believed, how did a rape-less society ever become possible? Three sister's take in a younger sibling when their father dies, in Hirokazu Kore-eda's lovely drama. Hirokazu Kore-eda gave priority to male characters in his last two films, Like Father, Like Son and I Wish, so it's especially refreshing that Our Little Sister focuses so squarely on female relationships. In particular, the lives of four young women, related through their late father, in provincial Japan. Eschewing the melodramatic, the result is one of his loveliest, most lissom films, full of quiet joy and simple pleasures. As the four young women attempt to help each other along, the film touches on themes of stolen childhood and genetic inheritance, but it also involves us in their daily lives over the course of changing seasons. Not dissimilar to the little treats they give each other, Kore-eda's film resembles a series of joyous surprises. Like a beautiful embroidery, it's the product of skill and patience that ultimately allows the beholder to share in its state of grace. - Tim Robey Director: Hirokazu Kore-Eda Cast: Ayase Haruka, Nagasawa Masami, Kaho Japan 2015 Run time: 128 mins Japanese with English subtitles Preview courtesy of Curzon Artificial Eye | |

Our final film for this year's Borderlines Film Festival is the extraordinary true story of how investigative journalists uncovered an abuse scandal and cover-up. It's the summer of 2001 and the Boston Globe has a new editor, Marty Baron (Liev Schreiber), who's curious to know why abusive Catholic Priests have gone unpunished. So he sets the paper's investigative Spotlight team onto the story. This is headed by Walter Robinson (Michael Keaton) and includes tenacious reporters Michael Rezendes (Mark Ruffalo) and Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams). Over the course of six months, they painstakingly piece together the horrifying truth about a systematic cover-up of child sex abuse. It's a fearless investigation that goes on to win a Pulitzer Prize. Widely compared to the Oscar-winning classic All the President's Men, The Station Agent director Thomas McCarthy's richly detailed, emotionally involving drama boasts outstanding performances from its superb cast, who paint a compelling portrait of investigative journalism at its finest. This attracts the attention of amoral banker Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling), who joins forces with self-loathing money manager Mark Baum (Steve Carell) to make a killing. Elsewhere, two rookie investors lure retired trader Ben Rickert (Brad Pitt) back into the game to guide them to untold riches. Like Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin was a skinny white girl with a big soulful voice and a deeply felt connection to music rooted in African American culture. Both also famously struggled with addiction and died tragically at 27, just as they were hitting their peaks. Oscar-nominated director Amy Berg (West of Memphis) draws extensively on stunning archive footage, contemporary interviews and a wide range of the singer's own personal correspondences. What emerges is a portrait of a hugely witty and talented free spirit who rebelled against her own youth in a town populated by bigotry, where she was targeted for her boyish looks and for being pro-integration. Janis tore down barriers for women just by doing what she wanted, whether openly dating black and white women and men, or leading a rock band with a voice that could take a little piece of anyone's heart. Unsurprisingly, Hou Hsiao-Hsien's foray into wuxia (traditional Chinese martial arts) is very different from most films of the genre. During the Tang dynasty, a trained assassin (Shu Qi), deemed insufficiently ruthless by her mentor, is sent on a mission that involves killing a powerful lord who happens to be her cousin (Chang Chen). The plotting is highly intricate, but Hou is more concerned with his heroine's moral and psychological progress and with the fruitful tension between stillness and movement, contemplation and action. His customary long takes, composed and lit to perfection by Mark Lee Ping, are punctuated by rapidly cut, expertly staged flurries of combat – all the more effective for being infrequent and unusually realistic. A film of astonishing elegance and originality.
