Still tickets remaining for this fantastic cartooning and poetry workshop at the library, with poet and illustrator Mark Bardsley!

This event includes a book signing session where you can purchase Mark's new book Crazy Animal Poems.

Suitable for children aged 5 - 11 years.

£1.50 per child. Please book with library staff.

Monday 3 Sep 2-2.30, then every Monday in termtime

Rhyme Time is starting up again for the autumn term. Half an hour of nursery rhymes and singing, suitable for under 5s.

Tuesday 4 & 18 September, 2-3pm

Looking for a daytime group with a difference? Drop in, pull up a chair and listen to great stories and poems for adults read aloud by library staff and volunteers.

Heritage Open Days Poetry competition - Oswestry Women!

As part of Heritage Open Day Festival 2018, which takes place between the 6th and 16th of September, Oswestry Library are holding a poetry competition. The competition theme is Extraordinary Women of Oswestry, and aims to gain insight into the lives, past and present, of the women of Oswestry. It is inspired by the 15th Century Poem by Guto'r Glyn where he describes Oswestry Women as second in beauty to those in Rome!

The poems can be written about any woman from Oswestry that inspires you in any way. You could go back and write about a woman from history, or write about someone close to you; the choice is yours.

The closing date is 5pm on Thursday 13th September 2018, and entries should be submitted by this date to either Oswestry Library or Oswestry Museum. On Saturday 15th September 11am, there will be a judging, prize giving and poetry reading event at Oswestry Library (please pre-book tickets) and an exhibition of entries.

Our 'Reader & Writer in Residence', Dave Andrews, will be holding a free, open Poetry Writing Workshop at the library on Tuesday 4 September, 11am, if you'd like help to polish your entry.

'Release your Extraordinary Woman' with Lise McNamara from McNamara Focus
Saturday 8 September 10-1pm

We all have a potential beyond our imagination. What prevents this from becoming visible or useable is often an interference, a block. Neuroscience, psychology and much more is providing an understanding of how we think and behave.

This interactive workshop for women of any age will provide an understanding of who you are, which emotions and thereby which behaviours are blocking you. A tool will be demonstrated that will allow you to release and move forward.

Lise McNamara has a 30 year background as: an Occupational Therapist, 20 of those as a Consultant in psychosocial, well-being, ergonomics and working environment. 3 years ago she became an accredited Kinesiologist practitioner and teacher of Kinesiology.

In honour of 'Lipreading Awareness Week', the library is hosting a free lipreading taster session. Come along to find out more about learning this life changing skill.

After overwhelming demand for our trial sessions over the summer, we are delighted to be bringing back the Shropshire Dungeon Master for more Saturdays at the library filled with magic and adventure! New players welcome, no experience required. Under 16s game in the morning, over 16s in the afternoon.

Learning at Lunchtime - 'Three Poems, Three Poets. An appreciation', with author Wendy Lowdon

Tuesday 25 September 12:30-1:30pm

An appreciation of three poems by three World War One poets, as part of the Wilfred Owen Festival.

These will be the poem, 'Futility', by Wilfred Owen, 2nd Lieutenant in the British Army; the poem, 'In Flanders Field', by John McCrae, Lieutenant Colonel in the medical corp of the Canadian Forces; and the poem, 'A Holiday Wound', by Major Oliver Hogue, Major in the 14th Light Horse Brigade of Australian Imperial Force.

Learning at Lunchtime - Susan Owen, Mother of A Poet
Thursday 6 September, 12:30-1:30

Dave Andrews, Reader and Writer in Residence at Oswestry Library and author of 'Wilfred Owen: Poet of Oswestry', talks about the strong-minded and formidable mother of the famous World War One poet. Though she never got over the loss of her childhood home, Plas Wilmot in Oswestry, when her father's business in Bailey Street collapsed and the family were forced to leave town, Susan fought hard to preserve the family's standing and to ensure that Wilfred, her first-born, would not be disadvantaged by their reduced circumstances and that he would have every opportunity to develop his talents.

Woman's Voice

Learning at Lunchtime - 'A Woman's Voice', with P.J.Roscoe

"During my research for 'Diary of Margery Blake', I came across lots of information of how women were perceived by society and how badly they were treated.

Just how far do you think we've come? Women were not even considered a person once married. Has that changed? Women were expected to behave in an appropriate manner, but just who decided how a woman could live her life...?"

P.J. Roscoe is the award-winning author of 'Echoes', 'Freya's Child', Diary of Margery Blake', 'Between Worlds' and 'Adventures of Faerie Folk'. She is also a voice actor for audio books, counsellor, therapist and chakradance facilitator.

Learning at Lunchtime - The Oswestry Heritage Comics

Thursday 27 September 12:30-1:30pm

Helping bring history to life: Join local artist and archaeologist John Swogger as he talks about his year-long series of newspaper comic strips.

The comics have been published in the Oswestry Advertizer over the past year, and the project has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund in association with Qube: Oswestry Community Arts.

 John will talk about how he researches and creates the comics, and how local history researchers, heritage volunteers and enthusiasts have contributed their enthusiasm and knowledge of local heritage.

This talk & taster session will supply insight into a KG Hypnobirthing course and how it can help you and your partner to remain calm and relaxed and prepare for a positive birth.
