Board Game Café!
Saturday 1 September 10-1pm
Have you ever wanted to: Save the world from a deadly disease? Build a great city & rule a mighty kingdom? Search for treasure in the depths of the jungle? Or travel the roads of ancient Japan? You can in a board game! Café with cakes, hot & cold drinks run by Oswestry Guide Dogs Fundraising Group. Come & say hello to the dogs!

Magic Show with Rob Spinks!
Saturday 1 September 2-3pm
Join Rob Spinks from 'Bricks And Tricks' at the library this summer for a spell-binding hour of marvellous magic!

Heritage Open Days 'Oswestry Women' Poetry Competition
Closing date 5pm Thursday 13 September
As part of Heritage Open Day Festival 2018, which takes place between the 6th and 16th of September, Oswestry Library are holding a poetry competition. The competition theme is 'Extraordinary Women of Oswestry', and aims to gain insight into the lives, past and present, of the women of Oswestry. It is inspired by the 15th Century Poem by Guto'r Glyn where he describes Oswestry Women as second only in beauty to those in Rome! The poems can be written about any woman from Oswestry that inspires you in any way. You could go back and write about a woman from history, or write about someone close to you; the choice is yours.
On Saturday 15th September 11am, there will be a judging, prize giving and poetry reading event at Oswestry Library (free but please pre-book tickets) and an exhibition of entries.
All entries to be handed in with a completed entry form attached, at either Oswestry Library or Oswestry Museum
Poetry Writing Workshop with author Dave Andrews
Tuesday 4th September 11am
This is a workshop at the library open to all. It aims to help you improve your writing skills, especially handy if you're thinking of entering the Heritage Open Days 'Oswestry Women' Poetry competition! No pre-booking necessary, just come along.
Books Aloud! We read, you relax
Tuesday 4th and 18th of September, 2-3pm
Drop in, pull up a chair and listen to great stories and poems for adults, read aloud by library staff and volunteers.

Join author Dave Andrews (Oswestry Library Reader & Writer in Residence) for the fascinating story of Susan Owen – Wilfred Owen's remarkable mother.

Release Your Extraordinary Woman with Lise McNamara

We all have an extraordinary woman within us. The Heritage Open Days Festival has focus on that this year. We have at least 101 named extraordinary women being celebrated. In future it could be you. This interactive workshop will provide an understanding of who you are, and which emotions and thereby which behaviours are blocking you. A tool will be demonstrated that will allow you to release and move forward.

Learn life-saving skills with St John's Ambulance! Come to the library to learn how to use a defibrillator this autumn in our free training drop-ins, suitable for all the family.

Life was hard for women. The suffragettes fought for women's rights. But just how bad was it? How far do you think women have come in a hundred years? Award winning author P. J. Roscoe bases this talk on her research for her novel 'Diary of Margery Blake'.

Tuesday 25 September, 12:30-1:30pm
An appreciation of three poems by three World War One poets, with author Wendy Lowdon. These will be the poem, 'Futility', by Wilfred Owen, 2nd Lieutenant in the British Army; the poem, 'In Flanders Field', by John McCrae, Lieutenant Colonel in the medical corp of the Canadian Forces; and the poem, 'A Holiday Wound', by Major Oliver Hogue, Major in the 14th Light Horse Brigade of Australian Imperial Force.

Learning at Lunchtime: The Oswestry Heritage Comics, with John Swogger
Thursday 27 September, 12:30-1:30
Helping bring history to life: Join local artist and archaeologist John Swogger as he talks about his year-long series of newspaper comic strips. The comics have been published in the Oswestry Advertizer over the past year, and the project has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund in association with Qube: Oswestry Community Arts. John will talk about how he researches and creates the comics, and how local history researchers, heritage volunteers and enthusiasts have contributed their enthusiasm and knowledge of local heritage.
