Welcome To The March Edition Of The
Kinokulture Cinema Newsletter

Awards Season is here with the BAFTAS on Sunday 13th and The OSCARS on Sunday 27th March so we are excited to be bringing you more nominated films this month and into April.

We have added an additional matinee screening for Kenneth Branagh's 'Belfast', Joanna Hogg's critically acclaimed 'The Souvenir Part II' comes to our screen this month and in April we have Clio Barnard's beautifully touching romance 'Ali & Ava' and Oscar nominated films 'Petite Maman' and 'Flee'.

Our 'Made In Wales Season' features two films this month 'Sideshow' a

We also have a special one off screening of 'The Beatles: Get Back - The Rooftop Concert' and many more wonderful delights including the mouth watering and tender drama 'Master Cheng', Kenneth Branagh returns as Hercule Poirot in 'Death On The Nile', 'Rogoletto' from The Royal Opera House and a stunning new adaptation of 'The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' recorded live at The Leith Theatre, Scotland.

Important COVID-19 Safety Update

Keeping Our Customers & Staff Safe

Keeping our customers & staff safe is an ongoing priority

The Government have now relaxed all Covid-19 safety rules in England but as we all know the virus has not gone away.
For the ongoing safety of our staff, visitors & customers we will keep in place the majority of our Covid-19 safety measures which include:
a one way system, hand sanitising stations and increased ventilation, cleaning and fogging after each screening.

We are gradually re introducing full capacity and any new films that we have put on sale from mid March will no longer have automatic social distancing.

Out of courtesy for others we strongly encourage our customers to continue to wear face coverings when entering and moving around the building.

These measures will be under constant review.

We ask everyone visiting or working in kinokulture to be aware of the latest advice from the UK Government on COVID-19, and to follow that advice to minimise the risk of the virus spreading.

If you or anyone you live with has symptoms of Covid-19 please stay home and arrange for a PCR test.

We are very excited to present another masterful piece of cinema from Ryusuke Hamaguchi, director of the multi Oscar nominated 'Drive My Car'

Wheel Of Fortune And Fortune and Fantasy brings you three stories: An unexpected love triangle, a failed seduction trap and an encounter that results from a misunderstanding.

Meiko is startled when she realises that the man who her best friend starts to have feelings for, is her ex; Sasaki plots to trick his college professor out of revenge, using his class-friend-with-benefits Nao, while Natsuko encounters a woman who seems to be someone from her past, leading the two to confess the feelings they have harboured in their hearts - stories about the complexities of relationships, told through coincidences that happen in the lives of women in love.

From lauded director Sir Kenneth Branagh, and starring an acclaimed ensemble cast, Belfast is a personal and joyful story about the power of memory, set in late 1960s Northern Ireland.

At the centre of the film is Buddy, a young boy on the cusp of adolescence, whose life is filled with familial love, childhood hijinks and a blossoming romance. Yet, with his beloved hometown caught up in increasing turmoil, his family faces a momentous choice: hope the conflict will pass or leave everything they know behind for a new life.

"Nightmarishness meets nostalgia as Jamie Dornan and Judi Dench star in a scintillating Troubles-era coming-of-age tale. Kenneth Branagh's euphoric eulogy to his home city." ***** Peter Bradshaw - The Guardian

"The writer-director's return to his end-of-innocence moment — when sectarian violence rocked Northern Ireland — is, to put it bluntly, his best movie in years ... A personal triumph!" - Rolling Stone

The Souvenir Part II (15)

In the aftermath of her tumultuous relationship with a charismatic and manipulative older man, Julie (Honor Swinton Byrne) begins to untangle her fraught love for him in making her graduation film, sorting fact from his elaborately constructed fiction. Joanna Hogg's shimmering story of first love and a young woman's formative years, The Souvenir Part II is a portrait of the artist that transcends the halting particulars of everyday life — a singular, alchemic mix of memoir and fantasy. Royal Opera House: Rogoletto (12A)  Encore

Sunday 13th March 2:00pm

A new production of Verdi's Rigoletto, directed by Oliver Mears – his first as Director of The Royal Opera. This production sees Verdi's masterpiece as a modern morality play that pits power against innocence, beauty against ugliness, in a pitiless world of luxurious decadence, corruption and social decay.

The Duke of Mantua is a serial womaniser. At a palace party, not content with the married Countess Ceprano, the Duke reveals he is also infatuated with a mysterious woman he has seen in church. The hunchbacked jester Rigoletto jokes that the Duke should have the Countess's husband murdered. Count Ceprano vows to kidnap Rigoletto's lover as punishment. Chaos descends when the elderly Count Monterone arrives and confronts the Duke for seducing his daughter – a third woman! Rigoletto takes his jesting too far, and the old man curses him.

Rigoletto's so-called 'lover' is in fact his daughter, Gilda, whom he keeps under lock and key at home. She has secretly fallen in love with the Duke of Mantua, who came to her church in disguise. Gilda is kidnapped by Count Ceprano and delivered into the Duke's clutches. Rigoletto engages an assassin to exact his revenge. But before the day is out, the old man's curse will exert its deadly power.

The late Christopher Plummer gives a great performance as Hal, an elderly widower who comes out as gay shortly after his wife's death and starts exploring life as an openly gay man.  Ewan McGregor plays his son, Oliver, looking back on his father's life and using it as inspiration to pursue romance with Melanie Laurent.  It's a drama with a lovely light touch, funny, moving, and a great tribute to Plummer.

The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde - Live From Leith Theatre (12A)

Thursday 17th March 7:00pm

Within the century-old walls of historic Leith Theatre, something sinister is stirring. A gothic tale of double lives and inner demons, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde takes on its own hybrid identity in this unique retelling.

Concerned by his good friend Dr Henry Jekyll's recent behaviour, Gabriel Utterson is driven to uncover the identity of the mysterious and dangerous Mr. Hyde, to whom Jekyll is enthralled. Whilst on this search for the truth, Utterson finds himself seduced by the society of Edinburgh's rich and powerful, but beneath the glossy façade lies a grim and brutal reality.

A first for National Theatre of Scotland, this exciting and unique theatre/cinema production is captured live from Leith Theatre and broadcasted live into cinemas across the UK on the 27th February.

This screening was filmed in front of a live audience.

Embracing the duality of the storyline and the period authenticity, the film will be shot in black and white. Both the film and live event will feature new electronic music by DJ and music producer Hudson Mohawke, acclaimed for his genre-smashing creative approach.

"Jekyll and Hyde is a masterpiece by one of Scotland's best storytellers deserving of a groundbreaking and challenging interpretation. What better tale to explore hybrid storytelling? Working with the National Theatre of Scotland to create this innovative piece has not only allowed me to collaborate with some of the most talented theatre and film makers in Scotland, but also to explore the narrative and formal questions that inspire me as an artist. I am so grateful to National Theatre of Scotland for consistently supporting and celebrating work that pushes the boundaries of storytelling."

Award-winning director Joe Wright envelops moviegoers in a symphony of emotions with music, romance, and beauty in Cyrano, re-imagining the timeless tale of a heartbreaking love triangle.

Made In Wales: Mystic Chords Of Memory (PG) + Q&A

Wednesday 30th March 7:30pm

Mystic Chords of Memory explores how people experience and maintain connections to their shared past and culture through narratives about place. Set in Cymru (Wales, U.K), this unconventional documentary touches on a breadth of topics and features locals across the country, including a storyteller who practices 'mythic maintenance' on his favorite historical site, a land-based artist creating work about the life of slate quarry workers, former coal miners, village elders, political activists, sheep farmers, and practitioners of Celtic spirituality. In weaving these seemingly disparate elements together, the film considers how both shared and personal identity are constructed through connection to place, and how stories serve as a means of cultural resilience and a vehicle of collective memory.

Following the screening there will be a Q&A session with Fiona Collins, storyteller & contributor to the film,
hosted by our Co-Curator on the Made In Wales Season, Alison Layland.

many of you will be aware that kinokulture has been supported by Film Hub Midlands & Film Hub Wales through the BFI Film Audience Network with funds from The National Lottery. The aim of this support is to give everyone in the UK the opportunity to enjoy a diverse range of British & international independent films and without this support we would not be able to offer such a wide range of independent & world cinema.

From time to time the BFI ask us to survey a sample of our audience so that they can continue to improve their offer and support for independent cinemas and their audiences.

If you have visited kinokulture in February we hope you will spare a few minutes to take this short online survey and help us to continue bringing a diverse film programme to Oswestry audiences.
