NT Live: Fleabag (15) Re-release

Thursday 27th July  7:00pm (subtitled for the Hard Of Hearing)

Written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) and directed by Vicky Jones, Fleabag is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life. Following a box-office record-breaking run in cinemas in 2019, the one-woman show returns to cinemas to the big screen this summer.

Fleabag may seem oversexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose.

The hilarious, award-winning play that inspired the BBC's hit TV series Fleabag, was captured live on stage from London's West End in 2019.
Presented by DryWrite, Soho Theatre and Annapurna Theatre.

With Pre Screening Walk & Picnic + After Screening Director's Q&A

Sunday 30th July 2:00pm

'Can one footprint imprint on our collective consciousness and create change? A walk; a pilgrimage, an odyssey…for the planet. Five hundred miles from London to Glasgow Cop26: Eight weeks, 56 days and more than 56 host organisations, over a thousand walkers and thirty rolls of 16mm celluloid film.'

Of Walking On Thin Ice follows the journey of more than a thousand walkers from London and Bristol to Glasgow for the COP 26 Climate Conference.

Beautifully created using a hand-crank Bolex camera, 16mm film and binaural microphones, the film shows what is possible when we commit to advocate and influence and be the change that we want for our world.

The Camino to COP 26 was a people's walk carrying a message of love, hope, grief, fear, and connection with the natural world to leaders deciding on the future of our climate. Director Ben Wigley walked with the group, filming their experiences on 'his hand-cranked 16mm camera' and capturing the sense of pilgrimage on this emotional and purposeful journey. More than a thousand walkers, aged from 8 to 80 plus, joined the Camino for a few hours, a day or more, with a core group of about thirty completing the entire route to Glasgow.

Death At A Funeral (15)
Oswestry Film Society Screening

Tuesday 1st August 7:30pm
?

In this black comedy, Daniel (Matthew Macfadyen) is a decent young man, trying to arrange his father's funeral.

But preserving the dignity inherent in such circumstances will be difficult, particularly with an undertaker who botches his work, the return from the USA of his famous but selfish brother, his cousin's fiancé who has accidentally ingested drugs, the presence of a moron who takes advantage of the sad event to win back the heart (or rather the body) of a woman who is about to marry another, and an old uncle who is also the most unbearable pain in the neck.

To cap it all, Daniel notices the presence among the mourners of a mysterious dwarf (Peter Dinklage) nobody else seems to know.

Chaos ensues in a very British humour sort of way - the American remake three years later can't hold a candle to it.

This original 2007 movie possesses a comedic climate right from the start, so have fun by seeing it on the big screen here in Oswestry.

Please note the film starts at 7:30pm there are no trailers at OFS screenings

Run Time: 1 hour 30 mins

Small, Slow But Steady (12A)
(Keiko, me wo sumasete)

Wednesday 9th August. 7:30pm

Shô Miyake's semi-fictional adaptation of Keiko Ogasawara's memoir Makenaide!is a delicate study of deafness in the context of an amateur boxing community.

Keiko, a hotel cleaner by day, spends her evenings training with her trainer in his shabby gym in suburban Tokyo. After surprising everyone by winning her first two professional fights, something even more unexpected happens, changing Keiko's psyche and the cadence of her movements.

Kishii is brilliant as the stern, introspective and determined Keiko, while Tomokazu Miura ably conveys the stoicism of her mentor.

Shot on sensuous 16mm, this is a unique boxing film that is less focused on victory in the ring and more concerned with the quiet but genuinely dramatic arc of Keiko's journey.

"Kishii is wonderful in her largely silent role, and Sho Miyake's film underpins its low-key style with a deft sense of rhythm." **** - Sunday Times

"Kishii Yukino gives a superb lead performance as Keiko, a young deaf woman who has just turned pro, in this highly atypical boxing movie based on the memoir of real-life boxer Ogasawara Keiko." Sight & Sound

Mad About The Boy : The Noël Coward Story (12A)

Thursday 24th August  7:30pm

If life is a performance his was a masterpiece

Noël Coward grew up in poverty and left school when he was only nine years old. He was queer in a very straight world. Yet by the age of 30, he was the highest paid writer in the world and a star on Broadway. He wrote, directed and acted in some of the finest plays and movies of all time, including Private Lives, Blithe Spirit, Brief Encounter and In Which We Serve. He also became a world-renowned songwriter and performer of whom Frank Sinatra said, 'If you want to hear how a song should be sung, go see Mr Noel Coward'. And if that wasn't enough, he was also a spy during the Second World War.

Against all odds, Noël Coward became the most successful multi-talented artist of the 20th century. He defined an era and led an extraordinary life. This is his story told in his own words, music and unique home movies.Directed by Academy Award and BAFTA nominee Barnaby Thompson, the film features Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, Harold Pinter, Frank Sinatra, Lauren Bacall, Michael Caine and Lucille Ball. Rupert Everett is the voice of Noël Coward, the film is narrated by Alan Cumming, and Adam Lambert sings the film's theme song in this inspirational and incredible story.

"This very enjoyable and informative documentary, directed by Barnaby Thompson, digs into the contradictions underpinning the life and work of one of the most prolific and versatile talents of the 20th century." **** - Wendy Ide - The Guardian

My Extinction (15)

Wednesday 30th August. 7:30pm

What does it take for us to act on the climate crisis -- especially if we're the kind of person who should already be acting? In this funny, relatable portrait, a concerned yet ineffectual dad finds the first step is letting those unbearable feelings of climate anxiety in, instead of pushing them aside. But as he meets others like him, he discovers how oil-backed propagandists funded our denial and paralysis. He sets out to unmask the vested interests responsible, helping raise a generation's leading authors in a vibrant chorus. MY EXTINCTION is a revealingly honest account of how to feel your feelings, act on your privilege, and get active when threatened with extinction.

"My Extinction is not just an entertaining film about unlikely climate activism. It's also about middle class angst, masculinity, privilege and entitlement, and how taking climate action might sometimes require us to step up, and sometimes to step aside." Earthbound Report

Director: Josh Appignanesi

Africa In Focus: Air Conditioner (15)

Thursday 31st August  7:30pm

When the air-conditioners in the city of Luanda mysteriously began to fall, Matacedo (security guard) and Zezinha (maid) embarked on a mission to retrieve the boss's AC by the end of the day.

Directors Note from Fradique -

A reminder that our city is made up of people, memories and not empty, glazed skyscrapers, inspired by soap operas or American films.
This movie is about buildings and all the "transparent people" who work and build their lives in them everyday. I grew up and lived in different ancient buildings in central Luanda. Matacedo is a character that embodies and reflects the state of inertia and, at the same time, of hope, pertaining to the vertical dystopias in which we live. In these buildings, each person dreams of the house they want and scramble for the memories they don't have.

In these buildings, the elevators are made of bricks and trees grow out of the walls - our neorealism is pure magic. My desire is that the film may now join the fallen air conditioners and be part of the living memory of this city.

The Princess Bride (PG)
Oswestry Film Society Screening

Tuesday 5th September 7:30pm

Oswestry Film Society are taking a short break over summer but will return on 5th September with this brilliant cult classic!

A story of swashbuckling derring-do, romance, revenge, trickery, pirates, magic, a giant, a six-fingered man, a true love-story – this 1987 fairy tale fantasy built up a huge following of fans, and remains as so many people's favourite even after all these years.

The film is on Channel 4's top 50 comedy films of all time list

The often stingy Guardian gives it five stars, saying: "The comedy has something of Douglas Adams, Monty Python and Mel Brooks, but the gags and comedy style are always lightly handled, laugh-lines delivered modestly, and all subordinate to a story told absolutely straight.

"It's an adventure which reaches back to golden-age Hollywood and the devil-may-care world of Douglas Fairbanks or Tyrone Power playing Zorro, or Errol Flynn playing Robin Hood."

There's an impressive list of names playing supporting roles too – from Peter Falk to Peter Cooke, Billy Crystal to Mel Smith….

The Princess Bride has something for everyone, and is fondly remembered (and regularly revisited) by those wowed by it in 1987, and has picked up a huge and loyal band of fans over all the years since then.

We love recommendations, and this film is showing by popular demand from Oswestry Film Society audience members.

"A delightfully postmodern fairy tale, The Princess Bride is a deft, intelligent mix of swashbuckling, romance, and comedy that takes an age-old damsel-in-distress story and makes it fresh." – 'Rotten Tomatoes' reviewer.

Please note the film starts at 7:30pm there are no trailers at OFS screenings

Run Time: 1 hour 38 mins

OTHER NEWS
Journeyman - the Art of Steve Dilworth
A book by Georgina Coburn

For those of you who came along to our premiere screening of 'Stuff The World Is Made Of' the beautiful documentary about Harris based sculptor/maker Steve Dilworth we have some exciting news to share.

After 5 years of research, Georgina Coburn's book 'Journeyman – The Life and Art of Steve Dilworth' is ready for publication. The plan is to release the book in time for Dilworth's autumn exhibition at the Pangolin Gallery in London.

"When I began my research in 2014, I wanted to answer the question of what makes a Dilworth? His work is powerful and its effect on many people, lasting and profound. In Dilworth's objects, as so often in life, what is most valuable is hidden inside. His art holds nature close, in ways our global consumer culture has too long discarded. I think what Dilworth's art connects us to has increasing urgency. The intention behind it and the way that his work is integrated into peoples' lives is unlike anything else in contemporary art. Dilworth's work is a living example of why art matters and acknowledgement of his importance in the history of Art is long overdue. My intention is to shine a light on his uncompromising, visionary work, opening up a wider conversation about the value of art outside the art world." Georgina Coburn.
